The following sections outline most of the different types of weekly rides that the club organises.

Introductory Rides (for under 16s), offering progress on the Junior Training Programme

bullet

Sunday morning rides, as advertised on the activity list, commencing 10.15am from Buckfastleigh and usually returning between 12.30pm and 1.15pm.

bullet

Sunday afternoon rides, as advertised on the activity list, commencing 2.15pm from Buckfastleigh and usually returning between 4.45pm and 5.30pm.

bullet

Friday evening rides, every Friday from April to September, commencing 7pm from Buckfastleigh and usually returning between 9pm and 9.45pm.

bullet

Some intermediate rides (see 3 below) if starting (and finishing) at a start point other than Buckfastleigh.  For example, a ride that is intermediate for someone starting at Buckfastleigh and riding to Dunsford would be beginner standard for someone starting at Chudleigh Bridge.  Ring the Secretary to see if one of these rides would be suitable.

bullet

Computer games and refreshments usually available after the ride or if weather is bad, offering parents and family a guaranteed finish time regardless of the weather: closing times are 1.15pm morning rides, 6pm afternoon rides and 10.15pm evening rides.

Junior Rides (for under 14s only)

bullet

Easy rides for under-13s only.

bullet

Organised on Wednesday evenings between May and July according to demand, 6.00pm-8.00pm from Buckfastleigh.

bullet

The speed of a given ride, and therefore the total distance covered, is adjusted to suit the slowest rider present on that ride.

bullet

Teenagers are excluded from the rides, so there’ll be no pressure to ride too fast and take unnecessary risks.

bullet

The rides are organised and personally supervised by the Section Secretary, Michael Jones, who is an Approved cycling instructor for Devon County Council.  A high priority is given to ensuring that all children taking part in the rides follow the correct procedures for all manoeuvres as taught on training courses, thereby increasing the likelihood of the procedures becoming second nature.

bullet

The rides help children to keep fit whilst at the same time offering lots of fun and a greater knowledge of the local countryside - every ride is a different adventure!

bullet

Parents are welcome to accompany their child on the rides whenever they wish.

bullet

Children can be escorted home after each ride if requested.

bullet

Lights not required until second half of August.

bullet

For those who might otherwise be disappointed, an indoor computer games social is offered whenever the ride is abandoned because of bad weather. Optional light refreshments will be available for purchase at discounted rates.  Parents should make it clear to their child whether he or she should return home or attend the social in these circumstances.

bullet

Option to graduate to the Club’s weekly Friday evening rides and Sunday rides, open to all ages, and then perhaps to weekend trips and full cycling holidays as confidence is acquired.

Day Rides For Intermediate & Experienced Cyclists

bullet

Standard Sunday all-day rides, as advertised in the activities list, starting 10am from Buckfastleigh, picking up other riders at one or more of our other starting points and at other times at pick-up points, and usually returning between 4.30pm and 5.45pm.

bullet

Ten Tors ride, one Sunday per year, usually June or July.  The ride takes you past ten Dartmoor tors in the Widecombe area.  If you join the rest of the group in walking to the top of each tor you receive a certificate at the end of the year.

bullet

Christmas Lunch ride, on a Sunday just before Christmas – can also be suitable for beginners.  Don’t miss this very special ride.  You need to book your place in advance – menu choices and prices are given in the newsletter.  You ride to the Ilsington hotel, arriving at approximately 12pm.  You can use the hotel’s private swimming pool and sauna for a charge of £2, then you enjoy a sumptuous three-course meal as per your order.  Trophies, prizes and certificates are awarded to members at the end of the meal before the short cycle ride home.

bullet

Cycle-camping trip.  Usually organised only when members request it, and usually during July and August.  If you’d like a camping trip organised, just ask Michael.
