This page was completed 20 November 2007

Just how many exciting adventures can one club possibly organise in a single year?  Judging by the tales told on this page, well over 100!  This special archive page is being compiled from all available ride reports, attendance lists and photographs from 1987.  It marks several "firsts":

* The first time these reports have been seen since they were originally printed as part of the section newsletters at the time

* The first time that attendances have ever been seen alongside the ride reports.

* The first time that photographs taken on the rides have ever been seen outside Section slide shows

* The first time that photographs have ever been linked with the ride reports.

Painstaking restoration work has been carried out on digital records that were previously thought corrupted, and now all attendance lists have been recovered.  A new high quality Nikon slide scanner was purchased so that the best possible scans of the original slide film could be taken.

If you were on any of these rides and you would like a high quality print or digital image of any of the photographs on this page, please get in touch with Michael.  Prints can also be provided of other photographs that just couldn't be squeezed onto this page.  If you have any good photos of any of the rides please let us know so we can add them to the page.  And of course, if you were on any of these rides you will always be welcome to join any of our current range of club rides and activities.

We hope you enjoy this remarkable record of our many and varied activities during 1987.  Please fill out the comment form at the end of the page.  And read our new Comments page to see what others have written!

Sunday 4 January Afternoon Ride: Puper's Hill
10 Present: Wayne Bolton, Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Rain

The light drizzle we had experienced at Buckfastleigh became steadily heavier and colder as we progressed up Wallaford road towards Cross Furzes.  Having confirmed the relationship between rainfall and altitude to everyone's satisfaction we made a hasty U-turn to Crofters - a little too hasty in Tim's case, as he rode into the hedge during the descent!

Tuesday 6 January Social: Video evening Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
8 Present: Wayne Bolton, Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

Escape to Witch Mountain provided suitable entertainment for the youngsters at this enjoyable social.

Sunday 11 January Day ride: Redlake
6 Present: Hunter Brimacombe, Richard Burge, John Iles, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake Weather: Cold / dry

A number of factors conspired to ensure that no-one was available to lead the scheduled ride to Redlake, so a brief excursion through the lanes of Landscove and Staverton weas undertaken instead.

Sunday 18 January Day ride: Torcross
10 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams Weather: Cold

Saturday's trip to Salcombe youth hostel had been cancelled by the warden, much to the disappointment of the youngsters who had booked, because his water pipes had been frozen by snow.  There was no way we were going to be done out of a ride through the snow today, however, so off we set towards Slapton Sands, stopping frequently for the inevitable snowball fights.

It was near East Allington that Marc fell into the snow and made the fatal mistake of lying there asking for help.  He quickly became soaking wet and cold, in that order, and was more than grateful to settle into the warm dining room at Torcross.

With lots of encouragement he managed the return journey as far as the Forces cafe, where a kind father was waiting to transport both him and his brother back to Ashburton.  The rest of the group completed this otherwise excellent ride as winter darkness fell.

Tuesday 20 January Social: Video evening Venue: Summerlands, Buckfastleigh
7 Present: Richard Burge, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Roger Simmons

D.A.R.Y.L. was the subject matter for this evening's social by popular request.

Sunday 25 January Day ride: Lustleigh Cleave
11 Present: Gabrielle Bourn, Colin Brierly, Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Jason Jury, Graham Moates, Mark Moxham, Martin Olney, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Cloudy

Lunch at the cave in Lustleigh Cleave: Jason drops dead leaves on Luke while Martin, Graha, Gabrielle & John look on.  Mark shows no interest!

Jason Jury poses for the camera outside the Lustleigh Cleave cave

Progress towards the Primrose cafe was impeded somewhat by the Bovey bypass roadworks which had cut across the old railway track, but eventually we arrived to enjoy a superb spread of tea and cakes.

When the 'exchange' (with Torbay Section) had taken place we set off up the steep wooded little lanes near Rudge for the thirty minutes journey to the destination.  Colin was able to guide us to an interesting little cave up in the woods which boasted a boy-sized exit at the rear, providing endless opportunities for lunch-time amusements.  One amusement which wasn't cave-related - covering Michael's bicycle with huge dead branches - did not amuse Michael at all!

The afternoon involved riding through North Bovey and Jay's Grave to Widecombe, the remaining snow providing fuel for occasional snowball fights along the way.  There was, of course, time for a visit to the Wayside cafe before making our various ways homeward.

Sunday 1 February Afternoon Ride: Widecombe
7 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Rain

A repeat of the January Afternoon Run's weather conditions led to an unprecedented mutiny as every last man voted to turn for home near Ausewell!

Tuesday 3 February Social: Map Quiz Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
8 Present: Hunter Brimacombe, Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

There were three teams for this 'treasure hunt' style map quiz.  Everyone seemed to enjoy it despite the cryptic clues - 'Extra Weighty Meaty Place' turned out to be the Moretonhampstead, much to everyone's disbelief!

Sunday 8 February Day ride: Dittisham
7 Present: Hunter Brimacombe, Richard Burge, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris Weather: Wet start

We made it to the Totnes pick-up despite Jason's attempts to slow us down along Colston road: riding at the front he shouted at several farm dogs, leaving them in a fine temper for the rest of us!  On arrival, however, the weather was uninspiring so a return route was selected which included some secluded lanes between Dartington and Rattery, bringing us back to Crofters for lunch.

Sunday 15 February Day ride: Babbacombe Bay
11 Present: Gabrielle Bourn, Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Martin Olney, Luke Rake, Vicky Sanders, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Bright sunshine and a good group helped to make this one of the best rides of the month.  We met Vicky and Gabrielle at Maidencombe beach a little later than planned owing to the presence of Gary on his first full ride.  He felt better after a good lunch, however, as could be seen from the way he joined in with the mad antics of the other youngsters on the shore!

Our return route took us through Stoke-in-Teignhead where we made an earth-shattering discovery: here was a contender for our 'Best Cafe in Devon' award!  Included with the excellent refreshments were a real log fire and a tiny silver bell, the latter to be rung whenever we needed anything!  Why had we not heard of this cafe before?

Tuesday 17 February Social: Cycle Workshop Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
6 Present: Richard Burge, Tim Dolley, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

This evening's social turned out more like a maths workshop than a cycle workshop - the subject was gear ratios!

Sunday 22 February Day ride: Bellever
9 Present: Hunter Brimacombe, Richard Burge, Philip Humphreys (12, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Kevin Presland, Luke Rake, Jeremy Weston (15, new) Weather: Cloudy / dry

Our two new lads coped remarkably well today considering the hilly nature of the route.  An indication of how well they did is provided by the fact that we reached the destination by lunch-time despite a somewhat gruelling push across the open moor near Laughter Tor against an unfriendly headwind!

The main event of the afternoon, apart from the hiding and relocation of Michael's mini-roll, was unfortunately a spectacular somersault by young Philip, caused in part by the cyclist in front who stopped without warning.  He was not seriously hurt, but the incident highlights the need for members to ride predictably at all times.

The Wayside cafe at Widecombe entertained us once again before we returned to Crofters via Bone Hill, enjoying the panoramic beauty of the National Park all the way.

Sunday 1 March Afternoon Ride: Owley
8 Present: Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, John Stuart Weather: Rain

In view of the poor weather, the Copper Kettle cafe at South Brent seemed like a good place to spend the afternoon!  Any idea of reaching the destination was quickly abandoned, return being by way of Rattery.

Tuesday 3 March Social: Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
7 Present: Richard Burge, Tim Dolley, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

The main confusion surrounding this social was the venue, changed from Summerlands to Crofters at the last minute.  After some experimentation we managed to get Andrew's new Byka electronic dynamo unit to operate satisfactorily, and there was of course no shortage of volunteers to try it out around Michael's house.

Saturday 7 March

Weekend Ride: Maypool YH

7 Present: Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham

Weather:

This year's Spring games evening attracted around seventeen DA members from South Dartmoor, North Devon and Torbay Sections.  Many thanks to the wardens for their hospitality, to Colin and Richard for their slide presentation and to Michael for the Crazy Post game - it is always amusing to see everyone running madly around the hostel balconies in search of a postbox bearing the name of some obscure town!

Sunday 8 March Day ride: Blackpool Sands
14 Present: Colin Brierly, Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Marc Dolley, Philip Humphreys, John Iles, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams Weather: Dry

Rectification of defective wiring led to a belated departure from Buckfastleigh, but those waiting at Totnes were used to taking our 10.45 pick-ups with a (large) pinch of salt, and were not unduly worried by the delay.  We ambled through Tuckenhay, with its imposing old factory dominating the village, and having joined the main Dartmouth road at Forces Cross, followed it as far as Hemborough Post, where we took the lanes once more for the last few miles to the coast.

On arrival there was no sign of tower or trams, just a few cold looking cyclists - the hostellers - who got even colder waiting while the day riders ate their lunches.  A brief nterlude was provided by a sprightly gentleman who astounded us all by not only going into the sea but actually staying there for a good ten minutes!  The most comical aspect to the event was the sight of Mark Moxham watching the gentleman with the sure conviction that he was watching Colin Brierly: 'I never knew Colin had so much stamina!' he was heard to say, before Andrew pointed out that Colin was in fact behind a nearby tree, reading his paper!

Once comestibles had been consumed, we re-mounted for the fairly short run back to Forces Cross, passing the splendid ruin of Oldstone Manor on the way.

The merry throng adjourned to the Pine Lodge cafe, where "the Headmistress" dispensed tea, cakes and good cheer (and discipline to the younger, more unruly element).  The final leg of the homeward journey included the descent of 'corkey', though one of the 'mountaineers' disappointed all by opting for the road instead.  Mind you, he was probably thinking of the ribbing he'd have received had he fallen off, which he almost certainly would have done.

Sunday 15 March Day ride: Grimspound
11 Present: Richard Burge, Steve Hughes, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart, Mark Williams Weather: Sunny

Having completed the exhausting climb from Bickington to Haytor, the track from Jay's Grave provided a welcome stretch of sheltered grassy bank for lunch and its associated activities.  On this occasion, Gary provided the entertainment by climbing an overhanging tree like a chimp and dropping dead sticks onto Luke and Andrew.

The ascent of Hamel Down, whilst proving somewhat tiring, did provide us with some spectacular views across Dartmoor and beyond.  Grimspound was but a short excursion away from the Cairn near Hameldown Tor, adn then we could lie back and enjoy the spectacular trackwise descent to Widecombe, which took nearly half an hour.

Tea at the Wayside cafe was followed by some splashing around in the river at Spitchwick before returning homeward via Hembury.

Tuesday 17 March Social: Cycle Workshop Venue: Summerlands, Buckfastleigh
8 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste (10, new), Mr Juste (A, new), Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons, Roger Simmons

Michael entertained the few members who attended this Summerlands social with a short chat about cycle wheels and their construction.

Sunday 22 March Day ride: Canonteign Falls
11 Present: Chris Blight (13, new), Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee (13, new), Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Martin Olney Weather: Wet

The early morning weather forecast was for showers, dying out by afternoon - which is why we all set out bravely at 10.00 despite the rain.  Either the forecast was wrong or the showers were very long, as it was still raining when we arrived home at 5pm!

The falls were certainly worth the visit.  Admission was virtually free at this time of year, and there was of course plenty of water in the stream.  Unfortunately, Graham attempted to cycle the footpath and fell onto a sharp tree stump.  HIs leg was bruised so badly that he had to get a lift home to Paignton, leaving the rest of us to continue towards the Primrose cafe at Lustleigh in the now torrential rain.

Sunday 29 March Day ride: Mamhead Obelisk
11 Present: Chris Blight, Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Sunny

This was one of those 'easy' rides that turned out to be a little harder than originally planned.  It was all Michael's fault of course, according to the none-too-happy youngsters, but that is one of the drawbacks of running a cycling club!

The morning went extremely well, with an interesting ride through the steep lanes between Gappah and the Obelisk.  When lunch had been consumed, views admired and silly games played, a decision (almost unanimous) was made to ride to the nearest good cafe for afternoon tea.  Stoke-in-Teignhead would not normally have been out of the question, but by the time we had repaired Chris' puncture near Dawlish and then climbed the wrong hill from Shaldon it was nearer supper time than cream tea time when we eventually arrived.

There were a few complaints, but all in all the ride was good practice for the forthcoming Easter tour ... and the tracks were quite good fun!

Tuesday 31 March Social: Final social Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
7 Present: Richard Burge, Guy Colston (15, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

The last social of the season was seen off with an episode of Star Trek from Michael's video collection.

Sunday 5 April Afternoon Ride: Torbryan
10 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Martin Olney, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Sunny

The most interesting part of today's ride was the exploration of a new track, from Torbryan to Tornewton.  There happened to be a river running down on this particular occasion (an advantage in the eyes of the youngsters) but it definitely held promise for the summer.

Friday 10 April Evening Ride: First evening ride
6 Present: Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris Weather: Wet

Congratulations to the four Ashburton youngsters who braved the elements.  It is hoped that Crofters entertainment and a mention in the Highwayman were sufficient reward.

Sunday 12 April Day ride: Pixie's Cave Joint ride with Torbay
15 Present: Colin Brierly, Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Marc Dolley, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Martin Olney, Mark Williams Weather: Sunny

When pannier straps had been tied up (thanks Vic!) and Martin's punctures had been repaired we set off towards Cold East Cross from the Bickington pick-up, hoping that the stiff climb would not prove too challenging for the younger riders.  The direct route via Ponsworthy Splash brought us eventually to Dartmeet, from where the riverside footpath was taken through the woods to the cave.  Sadly the rear exit (just large enough to squeeze through) had been sealed off with a large boulder, so amusements were relatively short-lived - until the stick fight commenced that is!

The Old Forge at Holne, now open again after the winter break, provided us with excellent refreshments before we made our way homewards.

Tuesday 14 April Evening Ride: Broadhempston
9 Present: Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Jeremy Weston Weather: Sunny

Having taken the standard route via Staverton to Broadhempston the lads thought it was time for some fun.  And so it was that we took the 'muddy track' from Beaston to Forder Green - one of the mudpools came up to the hubs!

Return through Thorncroft and Pridhamsleigh is always hilly and time consuming, but no-one seemed to mind as it was an excuse to try out new lights.

Saturday 18 April

15 Present: Richard Burge (15, Ashburton), Catherine Burnard (16, Bristol), Paul Deslandes (13, Paignton), Marc Dolley (13, Ashburton), Philip Humphreys (12. Paignton), Brett Jamieson (14, Torquay), Gary Johnson (14, Buckfastleigh), Michael Jones (27, Buckfastleigh), Warren Masters (12, Dawlish), Graham Moates (17, Paignton), Jason Morris (15, Ashburton), Mark Morris (12, Ashburton), Mark Moxham (17, Paignton), Martin Olney (15, Paignton), Mark Williams (15, Paignton)

1987 Easter Tour

This extended 6-day tour of the Cornish Coast was blessed with excellent weather and a fantastic group of youngsters.

Sunday 19 April Afternoon Ride: Easter Special
3 Present: Richard Hopper, John Iles, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Those members not visiting foreign lands enjoyed a leisurely amble taking in Hembury Woods, Buckland-in-the-Moor and Ashburton.  The afternoon's main attraction involved eating Cadbury's Creme Eggs on a windswept Buckland Common.

Friday 24 April Evening Ride: Spitchwick
8 Present: Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Sunny

This does tend to be a popular destination, doesn't it?  Andrew and Luke were the only ones stupid enough to go in for a dip in the icy Dart, the rest of us preferring to throw a tennis ball around.  My remark to Richard H that Luke had gone behind a bush to change received the terse reply 'I wonder what he's going to be this time!'

Sunday 26 April Day ride: Redlake Joint ride with Torbay
11 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Glenn Powling, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Colin, Vic and Iris (Torbay and Plymouth sections) all deserted us at Avonwick, preferring to select their own terrestrial routes rather than accompany us over open moorland.

We pushed through Wrangaton golf course to the peak of Ugborough Beacon for lunch, where fine views from Erme Valley to Teignmouth could be enjoyed.  A passing train seemed to take an eternity to travel from Ivybridge to South Brent despite its '125' status, but we managed to follow its progress right through to Marley tunnel before its distance rendered it invisible.

Crossing behind the beacon we quickly joined the old tramway, following its course into the heart of the South Moor at a snail's pace (Mark Moxham was the snail, probably because he didn't want to scratch his new bike).  We then followed the Abbot's Way from Crossways back to Cross Furzes, which (much to Glenn's dismay) involved careering down a bumpy slope, crossing a clapped-out clapper bridge, tackling a number of bogs and streams and climbing a stile.  We made it, however, and still had time for afternoon tea at the Crofters cafeteria.

Tuesday 28 April Evening Ride: Lambsdown
7 Present: Wayne Bolton, Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

This moorland route was probably a little over-ambitious in view of the fact that young Wayne had joined us.  Struggling over the bumpy heath was no joke in the semi-darkness, but fortunately we managed to locate a familiar path near Cross Furzes.

Sunday 3 May Afternoon Ride: North Huish
12 Present: Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Jeremy Weston Weather: Sunny

The steep hill to Rattery did little to dampen the enthusiasm of young Julian Juste from Scoriton, who had joined us for his first club ride.  We decided to take the little country lane between Culverlane and Shorter Cross, only to discover that the farmer had brutally felled every single tree and bush that had previously made our rides such a delight.  Michael was not at all pleased.

The lane from Diptford to North Huish was, by way of compensation, particularly attractive, passing as it did over the river Avon.  The little bridge, which didn't appear to be very substantial, was probably being held together by the many flowers that adorned it!

Return was via Avonwick and South Brent, which of course gave us the excuse we needed for a tea stop at the Copper Kettle, prolonged somewhat by Warren's blow-out.

Friday 8 May Evening Ride: Haytor
8 Present: Graham Burge, Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Sunny

The lanes from Ashburton to Ilsington are always a pleasure during the summer months, and today was no exception.  Some sleek young horses grazing beside the stream near Boro Wood were fortunate not to have been led off by the youngsters, who fell in love with them immediately.

When the destination had been reached, views were somewhat disappointing thanks to the distant haze.  A perfect golden-red sunset made a superb lantern for the return journey across the moor however.

Sunday 10 May Day ride: Rough Stuff Event Devon DA event
15 Present: Chris Blight, Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Richard Hopper, John Iles, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee, Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Sunny

Our Section certainly seemed to enjoy this year's event, kindly organised by Arthur Browne of Exeter.  The track through Bridford Wood, near Dunsford, was certainly a pleasure but I was surprised when Chris and Gareth came around again!  Clearly the fork at the end failed to make it clear which route was the way out, and Colin being in the wrong marshalling place couldn't have helped them.

Nevertheless a good time was had by all, everything being rounded off nicely by the generously-provided tea.

Tuesday 12 May Evening Ride: Staverton Bridge
7 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Duquemin (14, new), Julian Duquemin (17, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Some unfamiliar lanes near Abham entertained us admirably on this sunny evening.

Sunday 17 May Afternoon Ride: Invitation Ride
24 Present: Chris Blight, James Brooks (13, new), Graham Burge, Richard Burge, Arran Cliff (14, new), Marc Dolley, Tim Dolley, Gary Duquemin, Julian Duquemin, Stephen Hodgson (11, new), Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper (15, new), Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Gareth Lee, Steven Marks (12, new), Warren Masters, Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Ben Wyatt (10, new) Weather: Showery

Along Colston road to Hood Manor, we carried on to Staverton and Broadhempston, our official goal.  Some took the track from Beeston to Forder, while others avoided the promised (but non-existent) mud-bath and took the road instead.  Some shaky navigation caused a delay before we met up again, and then it was back through Pridhamsleigh to Buckfastleigh and welcome refreshments for the remaining dozen at Crofters.

A special welcome to the newcomers - we hope to see you again.

Friday 22 May Evening Ride:
5 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Damp

The presence of some heavy showers was all that was required to adjourn the ride to Crofters for the evening.

Saturday 23 May

Weekend Ride: Salcombe YH

14 Present: Chris Blight, Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Richard Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee, Warren Masters, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart

Weather: Sunny

Gary leads the water lovers at South Pool on Sunday morning, watched by Warren Masters and Paul Deslandes

On departure from the Totnes pick-up, Michael (and a few others) thought it might be a good idea to introduce the group to the scenic Sharpham Drive detour to Ashprington.  This delightful track runs alongside the river Dart, passing through fields and woods along the way.  On this particular occasion all the gates were padlocked and there was even an electric fence to add to the adventure!  No-one could have failed to enjoy the ride however.

We arrived at Harbertonford about an hour later than planned and set off along the quiet lanes to Moreleigh, Woodleigh (via a new stretch of lane) and Sorley.  The final section of main-road work was punctuated only with a chocolate stop at Malborough.

Salcombe estuary looked superb in the evening sunshine.  All of our previous visits to Salcombe had been during the winter months, so the hostel looked and felt much warmer than we had expected.  As usual we were assigned the attic dormitory - a secure location well away from the warden's quarters!

When suppers had been consumed there was just time for a walk along the coastal path above the hostel, which led us eventually to Starehole Bay and its associated beach.

Next morning we were to rendezvous with the day-riders at Torcross cafe, so we were obliged to take the ferry to East Portlemouth (in the usual three consignments) where we enjoyed morning coffee outside in the chill wind.  The maize of lanes near South Pool inspired a massive bike swap, but eventually we arrived at Torcross at the same time as Richard and Mark (the day-riders).

There were, of course, the usual silly games on Slapton Sands after lunch, Chris being the one who suffered most from the huge waves that pounded the beach.  The return journey was along the usual route through Strete, the only significant event being Warren's collision with a car at the top of the Slapton track.  Fortunately he was unhurt, but it provided an opportunity for Michael to remind everyone of the importance of good road-safety.

Tuesday 26 May Evening Ride: Venford Reservoir
4 Present: Richard Burge, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

This pleasant ride saw us roaming across the moor in search of a cuckoo that had been piercing the silence during our viewing of the reservoir.  After wandering along the reservoir path for a while and discovering that the bird had flown farther away we abandoned the search and returned via Holne and Ashburton.

Sunday 31 May Day ride: Hamel Down
8 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham Weather: Sunny

Another perfect day saw us taking some unfamiliar roads and tracks across Dartmoor, our home territory.  Following an extortionately-priced coffee stop at the cafe near Haytor, the pretty road to Manaton brought us to a local gentleman who was highly enamoured with our 'new-fangled' gearing mechanisms.  He could scarcely believe his eyes as the pedals flew around during our departing climb!

A hearty lunch by the stream at Natsworthy Manor prepared us for the spectacular ascent of Hamel Down, the rough ride across the ridge and the exhilarating descent to Widecombe, where the Wayside cafe once again entertained us for afternoon tea.  By way of a change we decided to try a new hill out of the village, leading us up to Pudsham Down via Venton.  Buckland-in-the-Moor and Spitchwick then formed our return route.

Friday 5 June Evening Ride: Crofters
8 Present: Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Malcolm Sheldon (13, new), Andrew Simmons Weather: Monsoon

It's strange how our youngsters seem to turn out even on the wettest days - we even had a new youngster from Ashburton today!  I suppose we should be pleased to see such dedication to the Section.

Sunday 7 June Afternoon Ride: Dartmeet
8 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Malcolm Sheldon Weather: Dry

Having done their stint at the Torbay Fair Michael, Philip and Brett sped back to Buckfastleigh (by car) to join the club ride through Michelcombe to Venford.  The high spot of the afternoon (apart from the visit to Combestone Tor) was the cafe at Dartmeet, which was new to us.  The peacocks which strutted around the premises added a touch of elegance to the place, but the refreshments themselves were only of average quality.

Return via Dartmeet hill all but killed young Malcolm, but he seemed to have enjoyed his day and promised to come again.

Tuesday 9 June Evening Ride: Lambsdown
7 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Duquemin, Julian Duquemin, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

In the wake of our previous disastrous attempt at the moorland crossing between Gidley Bridge and Cross Furzes we were pleased on this occasion to navigate ourselves quickly and efficiently along the correct route, admiring the panoramic views as we went.  There really is nothing to beat the feeling of exhilaration received as one surges freely down the open moorland fields, dodging sheep and cattle along the way.

Sunday 14 June Day ride: Plym Valley
13 Present: Chris Blight, Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Malcolm Sheldon, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Mark Morris talks to Richard Hopper on one of the Plym Valley viaducts, watched by Luke Rake

The original plan for this ride had included the use of a train from Totnes to Plymouth, the extra time gained allowing us to return via Princetown.  A subsequent phonecall to BR however revealed that there were no suitable trains available, so we were prepared to change the destination as the youngsters rolled up to the start.

After making a courtesy visit to the Avonwick pick-up a unanimous decision was made to go for the original destination via the A38, making a return through Cornwood and Ivybridge.  We don't normally choose to ride on dual carriageways, but everyone took advantage of the opportunity for a faster sprint and thoroughly enjoyed themselves in the morning sunshine.

When we finally reached the start of the cycle path (a BMX park was responsible for the delay) food was beginning to dominate the conversation.  A delightful grassy glade, about a quarter of the way up the valley, made an excellent dining area, providing remote peace and woodland tranquility as added extras.  Wildlife abounded here - the whole scene could easily have been taken from a storybook picture.

We followed the old railway track for several scenic miles, crossing three viaducts and blundering through a pitch-black tunnel along the way (this latter activity giving plenty of scope for amusement).  The youngsters still showed no signs of wilting, so Richard and Michael decided to risk the originally-planned moorland return.

This route got off to a bad start when the last stretch of track to Clearbrook turned out to be cut off nearly at the end, and two punctures and a collision were collected during the backtracking.  Nevertheless we soon braved the hills through Wigford Down and Meavy and even had the time (and energy) to divert past Burrator reservoir, which always seems to have a magnetic attraction.

But then began the hard work.  The road to Princetown proved to be little short of a four mile climb, and quite a steep one at that.  As if that wasn't bad enough, the thunder clouds that seemed to have been hovering over the moor throughout the day now deprived us of our sunshine so that when we finally arrived at the Fox Tor cafe we were more than ready to enjoy its warmth and other delights.  Some of the lads queued up outside the gents toilets - for the hot air driers!

This stop saved the day for many of us, the return route through Hexworthy feeling relatively easy despite its occasional climbs.  When the sunshine returned at Scorriton everyone felt pleased to have completed the Section's hardest ever ride.  But there were more rewards to come - a full tea at Crofters was all that was needed to complete one of our most adventurous rides of the year.

Friday 19 June Evening Ride: Spitchwick
10 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Duquemin, Jeremy Ford, Stan Ford, Paul Hamlyn-White (13, new), Simon Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Some of the group took the Shuttaford track through Hembury Woods by way of a change, but he main event of the evening was the swim at the destination, when Andrew took Luke's shoe across the pool and later had to swim back to fetch it.

Sunday 21 June Day ride: Blackingstone Rock

Exeter A Section decided to join South Dartmoor Section for this joint ride, but sadly the meeting didn't take place as planned because the Sections went to the rock on different Sundays!  Evidently the geographical location of the Sections in Devon does not aid their intercommunications.

The ride turned out to be another favourite with the members.  No doubt the Primrose cafe helped to get the day off to a good start, but the water frolics at North Bovey's ford and the ice-cream stop at Hound Tor rounded off proceedings nicely.

Tuesday 23 June Evening Ride: Staverton Bridge
11 Present: Wayne Bolton, Jeremy Ford, Stan Ford, Catherine Hopper (10, new), Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper (7, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Dry

The four under-elevens coped well with this leisurely spin through the local countryside.

Sunday 28 June Day ride: Fernworthy
13 Present: Chris Blight, Richard Burge, Julie Collings (14, new), Simon Hopper, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Gareth Lee, Graham Moates, Martin Olney, Vicky Sanders, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart Weather: Drizzle / sun

The Bovey bypass contractors' efforts to prevent us from accessing the old railway path to Lustleigh became more desperate with each passing week.  The past seven days had seen the appearance of a new 'Keep Out' sign, several strategically-placed mounds of rubble and a sheer-sided rectangular chasm situated centrally in the track!  We expect to lose a few cadets on the assault course during our next visit.

It was as Michael left the Primrose cafe that he noticed the absence of his expensive GoreTex rainjacket, left temptingly at the Bovey Tracey car park.  A phone call to Andrew Billington revealed that the coat had vanished, so there was little else to do except continune up the hill (somewhat belatedly) towards our destination.

In the event the reservoir proved a little out of reach if two cafe stops were to be included, so we contented ourselves with a Widecombe return, leaving the Torbay members at Cold East Cross.

Friday 3 July Evening Ride: Dartington
10 Present: Jeremy Ford, Stan Ford, Paul Hamlyn-White, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

A pleasant summer's evening started with the ascent of Bigadon hill.  The ritual throwing of chippings halfway up resulted in Gary chipping a front tooth.  He compounded this injury on the descent towards the A385 when he assaulted a travellers' truck with his head.  Damage to both seemed slight so we continued into Totnes by way of a twisted route through Dartington.

At Brutus Bridge Michael decided to drag Gary off to have his head examined professionally while the rest of us followed the track upstream to the Dart.  We took the loop past Dartington Hall and Michael rejoined us at Huxham's Cross for the return journey to Buckfastleigh.

Sunday 5 July Afternoon Ride: Littlehempston
9 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Hamlyn-White, Catherine Hopper, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake Weather: Sunny

Hot, very hot.  We set off along Colston Road with the intention of making Littlehempston.  This evaporated by Staverton Bridge, where the bunch arrived to find Luke already in the river.  We pressed on into the village and made our way to the weir, a bathing spot to rival Spitchwick.  For a pleasant half hour nearly everyone (except Michael and Richard H) got at least their feet wet.

Strenuous cycling seemed inappropriate so we returned via Barkingdon Manor and Green Lane.

Tuesday 7 July Evening Ride: Lud Gate
5 Present: Austin Daykin (A, new), Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones Weather: Sunny

The four under-elevens coped well with this leisurely spin through the local countryside.

Sunday 12 July Day ride: Treasure Hunt Joint ride with Torbay Section
14 Present: Richard Burge, Julie Collings, Paul Hamlyn-White, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Graham Moates, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, John Stuart Weather: Fine

With eighteen riders signing up, Luke's efforts in preparing our 1987 Treasure Hunt were not in vain (unlike one of the clues).  Four teams of enthusiasts followed well-chosen routes through the Coombe and Rattery areas, collecting various artifcats along the way and noting the answers to the sometimes cryptic clues.  Those who struggled to find the answer to the clue "a tea-stop frequented by Luke" had only to note the name of a nearby house "Wayside".

There were extra points to be gained for the teams bringing back the longest bramble, largest holly leaf, largest pine cone and largest cowpat (these youngsters do have strange ideas).  The winning team was Paul, Michael, Philip and Mark, but only by a whisker ... and anyway, everyone enjoyed themselves, which was the main reason for taking part.  There were, as usual, refreshments for all at Crofters by way of compensation.

Friday 17 July Evening Ride: Hockmoor Head
6 Present: Simon Barnes (10, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Neil Welles (10, new) Weather: Showery

A few showers and Luke's puncture together gave us sufficient incentive to return to base after only a short spin through the moorland lanes.

The weather looked rather threatening and the forecast had not been promising when the first six set off from Buckfastleigh.  Along the way to the ferry at Starcross six more were added to the party at the agreed points and we arrived there in good time - 12:20.  Lunch was consumed while we waited, and the appearance of the diminutive craft reminded those of us who had been on the Scotland tour (1986) of the 'ferry' between North Uist and Harris.  It was a squeeze to get us on, with the master rather concerned about his paintwork, but at 80p per bike he couldn't really complain.  It's worth noting that he left five minutes early, so a last minute dash for the ferry might not be worthwhile.

At Budleigh, Jason was the last to join the group, and Michael let the youngsters play on the beach for a few minutes - the weather had held so far.  On to Sidmouth and the Mocha cafe, where 'Patrons are requested to keep their dogs leashed and on the floor'!

Over the river Sid and British Gas jokes, up the worst hill of the day for the delightful sight of the hostel.  It now started to rain.  We realised how hard when Graham, Jackie and Matthew from Torbay dripped in an hour later.  Further entertainment was provided partly by the warden, who had a fire drill at 10.30, and partly by Brett, who was annoyed to find that he had put some holly in his own bed.

Sunday 19 July Day ride: Woodbury Castle Joint ride with Torbay Section
15 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Philip Humphreys, John Iles, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart, Jeremy Weston Weather: Wet start

After a late start the rain cleared almost instantly and we all set off for the famous Buttered Scone cafe.  Here we bumped into Exeter A-Section and we all sat out a short bout of heavy rain.  After lunch at Woodbury Castle we proceeded to Dunchideock in the hope of finding the day riders.

Meanwhile, having found Gappah devoid of any sign of life, the damp duo who constituted the day ride were soon on their way, enjoying the long descent past Mamhead before taking to the lanes to Exminster and Ide en route to the 'alternative rendezvous' at Dunchideock church.  After about half an hour at this tranquil corner the first of the hostellers hove into view and the assembled throng was soon tackling the climb to Lawrence Castle.

The occasional gateway revealed extensive views over the Teign valley and it was possible to pick out the cyclists' spiritual home, Blackingstone Rock, on the distant skyline.  The takings of the sweet shop in Chudleigh were boosted considerably as ample quantities of tooth-rotting stomach-churning 'goodies' (?) were purchased to provide sustenance for the homeward leg.

Tuesday 21 July Evening Ride: Broadhempston
11 Present: Simon Barnes, Wayne Bolton, Richard Burge, Catherine Hopper, Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jon Kettell, John Stuart, Neil Welles Weather: Dry / showers

Neil badly dented his rear wheel, making the brake inoperative, and the squeals of his front brake on the descents haunted us all the way round.

Sunday 26 July Day ride: Mothecombe
14 Present: Nick Bucannon, Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Mark Moxham, Martin Olney, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart, Mark Williams Weather: Cloudy / dry

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of this ride, apart from the obvious pleasures of building sandcastles, was the discovery of the Erme Mill centre near Ermington.  Open all the year round on Sundays this excellent new cafe will no doubt feature in more of our write-ups.

Friday 31 July Evening Ride: Holne
14 Present: Simon Barnes, Graham Burge, Richard Burge, Tim Dolley, Catherine Hopper, Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons, Neil Smith (11, new), Neil Welles, Andrew Welles (13, new) Weather: Sunny

Our younger members coped well with the stiff climbs through Scorriton, where the now familiar dog was awaiting our arrival.  The thought of another cuckoo chase at Venford was too much for Richard, so a return via Holne Chase brought us home before dusk.

Sunday 2 August Afternoon Ride: Avon Dam
10 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Hamlyn-White, Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Neil Smith, Neil Welles, Andrew Welles Weather: Sunny

Our usual scramble across the Abbots Way provided the anticipated excitement for all concerned, with the usual water splashing at Cross Furzes.

Tuesday 4 August Evening Ride: Kingston House
14 Present: Simon Barnes, Guy Colston, Paul Hamlyn-White, Catherine Hopper, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons, Neil Smith, Colin Smith (9, new) Weather: Dry

The outward route through Caddaford, Abham and Sparkwell introduced members to some new and interesting routes, but it was the return route that proved most eventful.  Firstly, a lad on a horse raced past the group along Beaston track and left a couple of cyclists in the hedge: he then rode along with us, causing havoc all the way.  Secondly, a passing tractor managed to remove young Colin's pedal near Well Farm!  He managed to push up the hill to Chuley transmitter, however, and got home at a respectable time.

Saturday 8 August

Weekend Ride: East Allington camping

6 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams

Weather: Sunny

This year's camping weekend, which got off to a bad start when Michael was unable to accompany the youngsters on the ride to the farm, turned out to be somewhat disastrous: some of the participants seemed to think that the farm implements lying around the camping area were destined for the scrap heap and treated them accordingly.  Fortunately the missing parts were later located, but it is hoped that the youngsters concerned will have learned how to behave on other people's property should they ever find themselves in a similar situation in the future.

Sunday 9 August Day ride: Ellender Cove
11 Present: Nick Bucannon, Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Graham Moates, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams Weather: Sunny

The five from Totnes met with the campers at the destination, where there was plenty of time for swims and walks.  The water looked particularly inviting from the overlooking cliff ridge, but a few were not to be persuaded to take the plunge.

Return was via Torcross cafe (of course), Forces Cross cafe (this is getting silly) and Corkscrew Hill near Tuckenhay.  We regret to report that Richard and Simon Hopper chose the road in preference to Corky!

Friday 14 August Evening Ride: Staverton
8 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste, Craig Nichols (13, new), Darren Nichols (11, new), Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

A pleasant meander through the Colston Road lanes brought us to Staverton Bridge, where the footpath to Staverton proved too tempting to resist.  Unfortunately there was insufficient time for Luke and Budgie to swim, so they made the most of stone-skimming instead.  Return was via Abham and Caddaford.

Sunday 16 August Day ride: Nutcracker Stone

Philip Humphreys crosses the bridge - with caution!

The anticipated barbed wire fence and minefields at the entrance to the Lustleigh railway track did not, in fact, materialise.  Instead we were greeted with a pleasantly gentle slope, completely free of obstructions.  When the new road is completed the area will be far from peaceful, but at least some consideration has been given to the walkers and cyclists who like to enjoy the path.

The great adventure began shortly after departure from the Primrose cafe (it was a wonder that Budgie and Gary managed to climb the first hill after their tea-drinking competition).  Firstly, however, Brett had to draw attention to himself by braking one of his brazed-on gear lever bosses, rendering his rear derailleur useless.  He spent the rest of the day grumbling about the hills!

We took one of the footpaths that cross Lustleigh Cleave, discovering (when it was too late) that the area was overgrown with ferns and other tropical vegetation.  The trek to the Nutcracker Stone would have involved leaving what there was of a path, so we decided to continue down the steep slopes to the river Bovey, gurgling noisily through the woods (the river that is).

An interesting footbridge, consisting of a slab of wood with a rail on one side, provided a useful crossing point when lunch and water fights had been completed to everyone's satisfaction.  Then began the arduous ascent through Houndtor Wood to Becky Falls.  Philip had a few problems with the gradient, as his shoes had very little tread on them - he seemed to slide back one step for every two steps he took forwards!

The final descent to the falls took us along forestry tracks and was particularly enjoyable.  There was time for light refreshments at the cafe before continuing along a 'new' road from Manaton to Hound Tor: it was a bit narrow in places, so we had to go back when we met a large van.  A very hot climb to the rocks themselves meant that another ice-cream stop was called for, but eventually we set off again for the return route via Cold East Cross.

Tuesday 18 August Evening Ride: Chalk Ford
5 Present: Simon Barnes, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste, Andrew Simmons Weather: Dry

Summer holidays seem to be taking their toll on attendances, but that didn't affect our enjoyment of the breathtaking Dartmoor scenery near Scorriton.

Sunday 23 August Day ride: Doddiscombsleigh
5 Present: Nick Bucannon, Richard Burge, Simon Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny
With Michael leading the summer tour and Richard H cycling across Wales it was left to Andrew to lead the small band of riders from Buckfastleigh.  After a personal call upon Richard B the group met Nick and Philip on their way to Chudleigh Bridge.  Riding up the Teign valley the Section then took a different route to Doddiscombsleigh from Lower Ashton.  On the way someone noticed what sounded like a noisy swarm of bees.  Stopping, everyone poked their heads over the hedge to see a motor-scramble course complete with motorcyclists and a steep incline.

After watching one loud race the riders cruised into Doddiscombsleigh where Philip found he had a puncture.  While he fixed it the others had their lunch and soon they were relaxing in the Primrose cafe in Lustleigh with a cup of tea.  Returning via the old railway and the Bovey by-pass (part of it), Andrew and Simon managed to get back in time for the end of the great Buckfastleigh bed race.

Friday 28 August Evening Ride: Rattery
8 Present: Richard Burge, Jeremy Ford, Stan Ford, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Julian Juste, Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Michael's absence meant that the bunch left on time this evening, much to the surprise of a few riders who had to put their skates on to catch up with the group as they headed towards Harbourneford.  A pleasant ride through Marley Head and Rattery was uneventful except for a tyre that refused to stay on its rim.  With the evening pulling in, lights were required for the last part of the journey, especially by Mark Moxham who had to cycle back to Paignton from Mill Cross.

Sunday 30 August Day ride: Maidencombe
2 Present: Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons Weather: Hot
Andrew set off alone to Five Lanes via Staverton and Red Post.  As Mark Moxham was the only rider who met him there, they decided to divert to Mark's house for light refreshments before exploring Cockington for lunch.

Tuesday 1 September Evening Ride: Eden Farm
5 Present: Guy Colston, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny

Post-tour exhaustion gave rise to a shortened ride through some 'new' lanes near Harbourneford.

Sunday 6 September Afternoon Ride: Henroost Mines
4 Present: Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Graham Moates Weather: Wet

Heavy rain did not deter the Hopper family from arriving at the start, although Crofters proved too tempting only five minutes into their ride!

Friday 11 September Evening Ride: Staverton
14 Present: Simon Barnes, Graham Burge, Richard Burge, Jeremy Ford, Paul Hamlyn-White, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Moxham, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Neil Welles Weather: Sunny

Some of the youngsters were completely lost when we took the Caddaford lane towards Landscove, and even more so as the blundered back along Colston road in the inky blackness.  Young Toby found a rather dangerous ditch to the side of the lane, but fortunately was not hurt.

Sunday 13 September Day ride: South Pool
12 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Paul Hamlyn-White, Simon Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Moxham, Simon Nicholls (12, new), Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams Weather: Dry
This special ride saw five members riding with sponsorship in aid of the Four Corners bike ride appeal, raising a total of nearly £50 between them.  There was plenty of action along the way, with Michael breaking a quick release skewer just out of Totnes.  The youngsters managed to get as far as Moreleigh before he obtained assistance and rejoined the group, and a decision was then made to head for Slapton Sands and Torcross (for obvious reasons).

Return was via Tuckenhay but not before Brett had been placed on the beach in front of an approaching wave and released with just insufficient time to get away - he was not at all pleased!

Tuesday 15 September Evening Ride: Holne
7 Present: Dawn Brewster, Matthew Hamlyn-White (10, new), Paul Hamlyn-White, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Kevin Presland, Andrew Simmons Weather: Clear

An interesting ride along the track through Hembury in the near-darkness was punctuated by Michael's rear deflation - in his new puncture-proof tyre!

Sunday 20 September Day ride: Grimspound
7 Present: Richard Burge, Simon Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Andrew Plumb (15, new), Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Weather: Sunny
With the Bellever weekend postponed by the warden until October, the usual gang were able to give Andrew a thorough introduction to traditional club activities, such as speeding down to Jay's Grave track and riding up and down the stream near Natsworthy.  Some of the most notable events were Richard's bottom bracket noises, which so concerned him that he decided to strip it down near Hound Tor.  A stone proved an inadequate substitute for a hammer, so he borrow the real thing from the ice-cream van!  It was all to no avail, however, as the noises continued unabated, so Richard went home and left the rest of the group to enjoy the delights of the Hamel Down track and refreshments at Widecombe.

Friday 25 September Evening Ride: Scorriton
17 Present: Simon Barnes, Graham Burge, Richard Burge, Jeremy Ford, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Paul Hamlyn-White, Catherine Hopper, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Julian Juste, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Neil Welles, Jeremy Weston Weather: Clear / cool

Our last official evening ride of the season was celebrated with hot refreshments kindly provided by Julian's parents in Scorriton - most welcome after the lamp-lit ride through the icy darkness of Hembury Woods.

Sunday 27 September Day ride: Fingle Bridge
8 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Paul Hamlyn-White, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Moxham, Andrew Plumb Weather: Dry
Tea and cakes at the Primrose were followed by an excursion through some interesting lanes near Moretonhampstead, which led us up some rather steep hills to the top of the famous Fingle track.  A hair-raising descent and an equally hilly ascent brought us to the Hunters' Path, from where the glorious heather and spectacular views were enjoyed over lunch.

The next destination was the wonderful tea-room at Chagford, at which Andrew had last year found himself paying for three cream teas after ordering only one!  In order to verify that this was in fact just an unusual mistake, we tried again today, only to find a menu which offered just two items: cream teas at £1.25 or cream teas at £2.25!  Extensive negotiations eventually yielded an agreement to provide fruit juice and cakes as separate items, subject to a minimum charge of 70p per head, but he could not say exactly what it would cost.  And when the two ordered cream teas arrived with six scones we challenged again, only to discover that he thought we had ordered three!  When the time came to pay, he presented us with a bill for £5.95 and then failed to reproduce his calculations when asked for a breakdown!  Cyclists beware!

Return via Jay's Grave was relatively uneventful.

Sunday 4 October Afternoon Ride: Dartington
16 Present: Noel Armstrong (13, new), Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Matthew Hamlyn-White, Paul Hamlyn-White, Simon Hopper, Steve Hughes, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Glen Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Mark Williams Weather: Fair

The Buckfastleigh to Totnes Raft Race gave rise to more confusion along the nearby roads than it does in the river Dart.  It was almost impossible to count our cyclists at the Totnes pick-up as the madding crowds dashed hither and thither in their attempts to catch a glimpse of the action below the bridge.

Today was a special occasion in another way for Torbay Section's Dawn Brewster, as she found out when we reached the Gallery restaurant at Dartington Hall.  There, in all its glory, was a huge birthday cake kindly provided by the Presland household.  Sadly, however, its life was short.

Leaving Torbay Section at Dartington Church we returned via Staverton Bridge and the lanes through Bumpston Cross, choosing (as always) to ignore the 'Road Closed' sign.  On this occasion however it turned out to be well and truly closed as the gas board were working on a huge trench which stretched right across the lane!  Had they not agreed to assist us by stopping their JCB we would have been forced to retrace our tracks.  Needless to say they were highly amused at the sight of us struggling across the gap.

We returned via the Caddaford track, from where Richard and Mark escorted new rider Noel part-way home.

Friday 9 October Social: Games Venue: Crofters Buckfastleigh
7 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

Michael's new computer graphics package, BBC computer Grand Prix game and Table Tennis kept everyone amused this evening.

The moorland track from Dunnabridge to Bellever

Bellever YH

Doctor Blackall's Drive, from Bel Tor Corner Mark Williams admires the view of the Dart valley from Doctor Blackall's Drive

When our three Paignton lads had joined us we set off for Scorriton and the moor, the conversation revolving around Mark Williams' assurances that there were numerous television sets located in the woods near the hostel, all of them working!  Some people humoured him, others questioned his balance of mind, but Simon had a puncture and so the subject was temporarily forgotten.

Dartmoor really does look its best at this time of year, clean and fresh in the autumn sunshine.  The temperature was plummeting as we crossed the Laughter Tor area from Dunnabridge, but the laughter really rose when the woods revealed no televisions!  It was Mark who had the last laugh, however, during our excellent supper (huge helpings of soup served with croutons), when the warden told us of the weird 'Willo the Wisp' art exhibition which had resided in the nearby woods during the summer!  He also told us what he thought of it!  (Going back to the supper, the warden even washed up for us, but the self-catering Hopper clan seemed content with their rice mountains.)

Evening entertainment included the over-pumping of Philip's inner tube, a number of nameless members cowering behind a glass partition in unashamed fear of the impending explosion.  When the end finally came it had more to do with Gary and the candle extinguisher than the now weary pump!

Sunday morning was perfect in every way, although Richard Burge may not have agreed as he laboured over the cleaning of the warden's brass lamp.  There was time for photographs outside the hostel before we ambled along the peaceful moorland roads towards Princetown's Fox Tor cafe, led by our capable eight-year-old pace-setter Toby Hopper.  The prison road formed part of the route to Wistman's Wood, much of the remainder being provided by the muddy and rocky track from Two Bridges - Vicky just loved the mudbaths!

Lunch, which was consumed within the ancient woodland itself amidst games called 'hide the pannier' and 'hunt the pannier' was followed by a more intelligent return along the upper reaches of the hills, thereby avoiding most of the rocks.

Climax of the homeward route was the use of the track from Bel Tor to Aish Tor known as Doctor Blackall's Drive, offering some of the best views of the Dart Valley we had yet seen - thanks Luke for the idea.  The track from New Bridge to Holne seemed likely to be equally exciting, until the seventh stile finally killed off all enthusiasm!  It was enjoyable, nevertheless.

Sunday 18 October Day ride: Haytor
2 Present: Gary Johnson, Michael Jones Weather: Wet
Only Michael and Gary got as far as the pick-up and so the remainder of the ride was abandoned - a fortunate decision in view of the terrible weather which later assaulted the area.

Friday 9 October Social: Games Venue: Crofters Buckfastleigh
10 Present: Richard Burge, Glenn Dowty (12, new), Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Lakeman (14, new), Paul Lakeman (13, new), Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

Our new lads from Paignton had a job finding Crofters in the dark, but were still able to join in with some of the games despite their 8pm arrival.  Activities included Trivial Pursuit, computer drawing, computer games, synthesiser and video.

Sunday 25 October Day ride: Dartmouth
9 Present: Noel Armstrong, Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Jeremy Weston Weather: Sunny / cold

View back to Dittisham church from the Bozomzeal road

Noel impressed us all by cycling from Bovey to meet us at Buckfastleigh this morning, and Warren, who had recently broken one of his fingers, was today sufficiently recovered to meet us at the Totnes pick-up, full of the joys of autumn.  Noel had brake problems on the hill out of Totnes, giving us all a rare chance to enjoy the views of Totnes, then his bell fell off on the way down Bow hill!

We had almost forgotten the beauty of the lower reaches of the Dart.  Today there was time to admire it as we walked up Corky (collecting chestnuts along the way) and cycled along the delightful lanes to Dittisham.  There was a little confusion at Bozomzeal as we tried to find the correct route through the fields.  A cleverly-disguised gateway eventually revealed itself, and lunch was enjoyed on the sunny banks of a steep meadow near Hole Copse amid BMX-style cycling antics.

The final section of the track was a bit muddy, and not at all to Noel's liking as he was riding a new bike which he was testing 'on approval'.  When we emerged at Old Mill Creek he decided to wash his wheels off, but sadly got stuck in the creek and succeeded only in washing his feet!

Once we had struggled up the hill against an almost unbelievably large crowd of walkers that had suddenly appeared from nowhere, we discovered plenty of action in Dartmouth.  There was some sort of boat race or regatta taking place on the quay, commentary about which was being provided over a public address system.  To our amusement the commentator seemed to know as little about the event as we did, referring to the winning boats as 'the green thing' and 'the galleon' right up to the winning post!  We quickly despaired and retired to a nearby cafe.

The ferry crossing, far from being our last hurdle, heralded the start of a new set of disasters for our happy gang.  Luke stopped at the bottom of the hill to fix a slow puncture that had turned somewhat faster during the crossing.  Jeremy stopped half-way up with another puncture and the rest of us waited at the top for half an hour for them to catch up.  Luke had sadly had a second puncture on the way up, and now everyone was well frozen.

We managed to make good speed though Marldon, Red Post and Staverton despite the darkness and lowering fog, but when Andrew punctured near Riverford at 6pm we decided that it was time to send people homewards.  We finally reached Buckfastleigh by 6.30.

Sunday 1 November Afternoon Ride: Denbury
10 Present: Noel Armstrong, Richard Burge, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons Weather: Sunny / cold

We regret to inform readers that two of our younger members declined to ride the Torbryan track towards Denbury, even though one of them had a mountain bike!  The track, incidentally, did not turn out to be as muddy as might have been expected.

The groups rejoined alongside Denbury's huge rubbish pile, presumably the accumulation of many weeks' collections in aid of the Bonfire Night appeal.  It even had a couple of guys for a few minutes before we set off once more for our puncture-riddled return.

Friday 6 November Social: Cycle Workshop Venue: Crofters Buckfastleigh
10 Present: Richard Burge, Glenn Dowty, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Lakeman, Paul Lakeman, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart

There was good support from Paignton once again for our special look into the world of cycle wheels.

Saturday 7 November

Weekend Ride: Maypool YH

18 Present: Richard Burge, Marc Dolley, Glenn Dowty, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Glen Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart, Edwin Webber

Weather: Grey / cold

Our most popular hostel weekend began with a certain amount of amusement.  Brett had been entrusted to obtain the box of fireworks from Torquay and was waiting at Totnes with said fireworks stowed away in his rucksack when the eleven arrived from Buckfastleigh.  There was then a three-pronged hunt through the town's fruit shops in search of some pumpkins for the 'Pumpkin Carving Competition'.  Sadly there were none available and so a couple of medium-sized swedes were obtain instead.

The ride to Maypool was punctuated with a number of mechanical problems, providing some some degree of variety on this rather grey afternoon.  Dodo's saddle persistently refused to remain attached to the bike, and his handlebars seemed similarly discontented with life awheel.  Then there was Jason's slow puncture and Warren's chain .. so it was well dark when we finally arrived at the hostel!

Last year's display, organised by the wardens, was undoubtedly excellent, but sadly it made a big loss for the hostel.  This year they were under strict instructions to take no risks, so we were asked to buy our own fireworks.  A £20 box could not hope to compete with last year's £100 box, but the evening was entertaining and no-one had to pay more than 50p.

The evening was nicely rounded off with hot dogs, drinks and the famous pumpkin competition, this year attracting two teams.  The warden (who was our judge this year) felt that one swede had better artistic quality whilst the other looked more professional, and so declared joint winners.

Sunday 8 November Day ride: Mamhead Obelisk
20 Present: Richard Burge, Paul Deslandes, Marc Dolley, Glenn Dowty, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Glen Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Mark Moxham, Andrew Simmons, John Stuart, Edwin Webber, Mark Williams ... Weather: Grey / cold
The self-caterers soon learned the benefits of claiming their milk on arrival at the hostel as they waited patiently outside reception until 8.30am.  At Maypool the shop doesn't open until hostel breakfasts have been served and completed!

During the prolonged preparations for departure there was some consternation at Mark's efforts to pump his tyre to the state pressure with the assistance of his new pressure gauge.  We had travelled not more than a few hundred metres when a loud explosion shattered the tranquillity of the Galmpton lanes!

A few souls left us at Paignton as we set off along the sea front route to Brett's house, where refreshments were enjoyed.  We then proceeded to the Newton Abbot pick-up, arriving one hour late and just a few moments before the two Johns had given us up for lost.

In line with our new policy of finding some 'new' lanes on every ride, we rode through Humber to Ideford after enjoying a somewhat brief lunch part-way up the golf course road from Kingsteignton.  The autumn leaves were looking at their very best today, particularly around Ugbrooke House where numerous pheasants also adorned the picture-book scenery.

Brookside tearooms provided a very comfortable resting place at Bovey Tracey, but when apple pies had been consumed it was time to hit the road once again.  It was a leaf-strewn road, and led to the inevitable leaf fights before the drizzle set in and thoughts turned quickly homewards.

Sunday 15 November Day ride: Topsham Bridge
4 Present: Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris Weather: Wet
Poor Gary!  As he prepared his bike for the ride he discovered that his derailleur spring was broken.  He was forced to abandon the ride while the rest of us explored a new set of interesting lanes from Harberton to Rattery, arriving back at Crofters in time for a well-earned lunch and dry-out.

Friday 20 November Social: Highway Code Quiz Venue: Paignton
13 Present: Richard Burge, Glenn Dowty, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Lakeman, Paul Lakeman, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons

Our first ever social outside Buckfastleigh took place at Philip's house in Paignton and attracted a record turnout for the current season.  Results of the quiz seem to indicate that whilst a few members have some catching up to do, most have reasonably good knowledge of the way they should behave on the road.  It just remains for them to put it into practice!

Sunday 22 November Day ride: Hittisleigh
4 Present: Noel Armstrong, Richard Burge, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones Weather: Damp
The DA AGM rarely generates much excitement amongst our youngsters, and this year was no exception.  Budgie's desire to cycle meant that two members, who would have been pleased to ride via Lustleigh in the car, stayed home, and so our attendance was down to just four.

We made good use of the morning by exploring a new route through Dunsford and Cheriton Bishop, passing some refreshingly different scenery along the way.  Return was somewhat later, darker and wetter than anticipated and so a cafe at Moretonhampstead provided excellent date cakes for our delight.

Sunday 29 November Day ride: Hansel Mill
6 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris Weather: Damp
The abysmal weather forecast did not deter a few brave souls from venturing out to the Totnes pick-up, despite the rather ominous sky.  We managed to explore another new lane, this time between Moreleigh and Blackawton, before the heavens opened.  A conveniently-situated evergreen near picturesque Millcombe provided shelter during lunch.  With the Forces Cross cafe being only a few miles distant there seemed to be only one direction to be considered.  The chosen route through Dallacombe, however, did not turn out to be as 'yellow' as the map had indicated, the central portion being overgrown with grass and the side being deeply pitted with holes and overhung with untrimmed headges.

When our host at the cafe had entertained us in her usual flamboyant manner, we departed for the usual return through Corky, Tuckenhay and Totnes, the youngsters amusing themselves along the way by decorating the rear portions of their bikes with huge plant stalks.  No doubt passers-by thought that they were all equipped with the latest in radio communications technology!

Friday 4 December Social: Monopoly Knock-Out Venue: Ashburton
7 Present: Richard Burge, Jeremy Ford, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Andrew Simmons

Games of Monopoly definitely took second place to Richard's two chinchillas, who couldn't keep still for more than a second!

Sunday 6 December Afternoon Ride: Rolster Bridge
6 Present: Richard Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Mark Moxham Weather: Dry

The Copper Kettle cafe at South Brent always provides a warm welcome, so we decided to sample some of their drinks and cakes before diverting homeward via Avonwick and Rattery.  Toby, who at eight years old is one of our youngest members, seemed to sail up the hills on his 'new' bike.

Sunday 13 December Day ride: Clifford Bridge
5 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris Weather: Dry
Our 'new lanes on every ride' policy continued on today's ride when we tried the steep hill past Bovey hospital on our route past Hennock reservoirs.  There were complaints of course, notably from Mark and Gary, but the views made it all worth the effort.  A short excursion along a footpath brought us to a pleasant lunch spot on the banks of the Trenchford reservoir.

Blackingstone Rock was the next stop.  The stiff wind threatened to blow Mark off the top of the rock, but proved useful in propelling armfulls of dead leaves towards their human targets.  When the entertainments were concluded, a 'new' tearoom at Moretonhampstead provided us not only with excellent refreshments in pleasant surroundings but also a vast art gallery which Gary found particularly interesting.

The return was via North Bovey and Jay's Grave, the ford at the former providing the usual watery fun.

Friday 18 December Social: 1987 Slide Show Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
9 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons

Seeing the slides of the year's tours and rides brought back happy memories for some and encouraged everyone to look forward to their summer's activities.

Sunday 20 December Day ride: Christmas Lunch
19 Present: Nick Buchanan, Richard Burge, Catherine Hopper, Margaret Hopper, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, John Iles, Brett Jamieson, Gary Johnson, Glen Johnson, Michael Jones, Warren Masters, Graham Moates, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Jeremy Weston Weather: Dry
Our venue for Christmas Lunch rides has always been the Ship Inn at Starcross, until this year that is.  Today we were going somewhere different - the very special Leusdon Lodge guest house on Dartmoor.  Everyone had chosen their meals in advance from the menu and paid their deposits, so when we finally arrived (after exploring further new roads from Cold East Cross to Ponsworthy) everything was ready.

A huge long table occupied the mahogany-panelled dining room, and numerous staff were buzzing around the hall as we took our seats.  Immediately the steaming soups were brought in, quickly followed by the excellent main courses and finally the Christmas puddings and other sweets.  The atmosphere was perfect, and it seems certain that we will return again next year.

The descent to Spitchwick hardly provided sufficient exercise, but silly games on the common made up the deficit before we finally set off for home.

Sunday 27 December Day ride: Warren Point
7 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Philip Humphreys, Michael Jones, Mark Moxham, John Stuart Weather: Cloudy, then wet
John Stuart was able to join us for this one ride, which happened to coincide with his all-too-brief Christmas holiday.  The outward journey was memorable for our lack of success in finding an open cafe, the one at Erme Mill being closed for this week only.  Nevertheless, the ride was enjoyable.

We were pleased to reach Bigbury: the fresh sea air and rough waves made lunch on Burgh Island all the more enjoyable.  (We have heard, incidentally, that Bigbury youth hostel is due to close, so we will now never be able to find out what it was like!)

Having cycled back across the sandy beach, struggling to find ways of stopping the wheels from sinking into the wet sand, we set off up the hill for the return route, knowing that rain was forecast for the afternoon.  Sadly it arrived almost immediately, but once we were drenched we were able to enjoy the ride once again.

Friday 29 December Social: Christmas Social Venue: Crofters, Buckfastleigh
11 Present: Richard Burge, Richard Hopper, Simon Hopper, Toby Hopper, Gary Johnson, Michael Jones, Jason Morris, Mark Morris, Luke Rake, Andrew Simmons, Jeremy Weston

This year's mix of games, mince pies, computers and music proved very popular with the members.  Perhaps the most amusing event  of the afternoon was when Andrew upset the Risk board halfway through a two-hour game!  He was not too popular!
