| Sunday 29 December |
Morning ride: |
1015-1315 |
| 4 Present: James B (13), Michael J,
Gavin P, Tommy R (11) |
Weather: Torrential rain |
| Miserable weather for the second of our Christmas specials
turned out to be good news for James and Tommy when they were introduced to
their first games of badminton at Ivybridge leisure centre. By the end
of the hour they were able to serve and return, and were eagerly looking
forward to the next wet cycle ride! |
| Sunday 22 December |
Morning ride: Staverton |
1015-1315 |
| 6 Present: James B (13), Jake C (14),
Michael J, Oliver L, Tommy R (11), Matthew T (14) |
Weather: Sunny and mild |
| The first of our two Christmas Special rides attracted four
new youngsters for a fun ride to Staverton. The river was so high
today after overnight rain that we were unable to cross to the Island, so we
contented ourselves with taking some video shots of the Santa Special steam
train and playing with the aerobies in the park. As promised, Michael
produced several Christmas chocolates for all present. Suitably
refuelled, the journey home via Abham and Caddaford was relaxed and
enjoyable. Free computer games were offered during the afternoon, and
first details of the new Junior Training Programme (to start in
January) were announced - see elsewhere on the web site for more
information. |

Morning ride:Holne |
1015-1200 |
| 1 Present: Michael J |
Weather: Very cold & cloudy |
| Michael made up for everyone else's lack of
enthusiasm this morning by enjoying a brisk solo ride through Ashburton and
River Dart Country Park. Climbing Holne Chase he was surprised to see
the postvan coming from the Holne direction: sure enough, a check of the
postbox in the village confirmed that Holne is indeed fortunate enough to
have a Sunday collection, putting it on the same status as Buckfastleigh!
Return was via Michelcombe and Scoriton. |

Day ride: Exeter Ship Canal |
1015-1630 |
| 2 Present: Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and dry |
| Today's advertised morning ride was quickly changed to a
car-assisted day ride at the start. The new start point was Starcross
car park, from where we splashed our way along Powderham lane to the level
crossing and the beginning of the path to Turf Lock. The going was
somewhat muddy, but the views across the Exe estuary were magnificent on
this sunny November morning. The multitude of wading birds foraging on the
mud-banks were attracting flocks of bird-watchers equipped with the very
latest in ocular enhancements, so progress along the canal path proved
slower than expected. It was 12.30 when we arrived at the Waterfront
area of Exeter, browsing all the interesting restaurants and cafes in search
of the perfect venue for our mid-day meal. After a thorough
exploration of the many cycle paths that lines the canal through the centre
of Exeter we eventually returned to the Waterfront to enjoy some very large
and tasty pizzas in the afternoon sun.
Riding back along the canal path to Starcross we decided that a few more
car-assisted rides during the winter months (with lunch out of course) may
not be such a bad idea! |

Morning ride: Bickham Bridge |
1015-1330 |
| 4 Present: Dave H, Daniel H, Michael J,
Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| After what seemed like weeks of rain we decided to make the
most of the good weather by running a fairly brisk and ambitious ride to the
South Hams. From South Brent we dropped down the hill to Avonwick and
then took the lanes through to North Huish. A local pensioner, out
walking his dog in the sunshine, was reminded of his own cycling experiences
in Lincolnshire when he was younger, but he politely declined our invitation
to join us. Pressing on through the peaceful village we descended to the
picturesque Bickham Bridge where the course of the old railway passes
alongside the sparkling river Avon amidst autumnal woodland glades. It
would have made a perfect lunch stop, but today we had little time to admire
the view. A tough climb was followed by a short spin through the
village of Diptford and then a speedy spin along the main road to Tigley and
Dartington. With sunshine glinting off every stream our ride ended
with Colston road, bringing us home just after 1pm.
It was good to see Dave Hartnell again after his summer fracture. |

Morning ride |
1015-1500 |
| 3 Present: Daniel H, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Showers |
| We really had planned a ride today, but Michael suffered 2
separate thorn punctures within a mile of the start, and then the weather
deteriorated while repairs were being effected. Being a democratic
organisation we allowed a vote, and the decision took us once again to
badminton, this time at Dyrons, Newton Abbot. There was a condition
attached, however: next week's ride will be a full day ride if there are no
juniors present! |

so poor on Sundays. |
| Sunday 3 November |
Morning ride |
1015-1500 |
| 4 Present: Daniel H, Michael J, Thomas
M, Gavin P |
Weather: Heavy showers |
| Bad weather stopped our ride once again, so a mix of
badminton (at Ashburton) and indoor games provided an acceptable mix of
activity and relaxation. |

Morning ride: River Dart Country Park |
1015-1200 |
| 4 Present: Julian D, Daniel H, Michael
J, Gavin P |
Weather: Light showers |
| The forecast had been predicting doom for Sunday all week,
but when the day dawned the rain had largely cleared away and we were able
to enjoy a short spin through Hembury Woods, returning via River Dart
Country Park and the main Ashburton road. When we got home there was
still time for a good game of badminton at Ashburton. |

|
| We booked two games of 10-pin bowling at LA Bowl, Newton
Abbot. We were all below our usual standard, but Julian was victorious
in the first game with 114 and Gavin just beat Luke to the finishing mark in
the second with a score of 136. |
| Sunday 20 October |
Morning ride: Holne |
1015-1200 |
| 2 Present: Daniel H, Michael J |
Weather: Light rain, becoming heavier |
| The forecasted torrential rain did not materialise so the
two who ventured out were rewarded with a thoroughly enjoyable spin through
Hembury Woods and Holne, returning via Cross Furzes just as the rain began
to become unpleasant. |

| Sunday 13 October |
Morning ride: |
1015-1330 |
| 3 Present: Daniel H, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Torrential rain |
| Badminton seemed a much better activity to be pursuing on
such a wet morning - we were able to book a court at Ashburton at short
notice and enjoyed 5 excellent games. |

combat on the court. Multiplayer XBox games provided further
entertainment when we returned to Crofters. |
| Sunday 6 October |
Morning ride: Ipplepen |
1015-1330 |
| 4 Present: Julian D, Daniel H, Michael J,
Gavin P |
Weather: Fine |
| Daniel Houghton, from Holne, has been thinking about joining
one of our rides for many years, and today his dreams became reality -
albeit on Michael's spare bike. Our route took us through Staverton,
where the annual raft race was in full swing. Water levels were
extremely low, making the going difficult on many stretches of the river,
but this merely added to the entertainment value for the waiting crowds.
Daniel was doing fine so we pressed on through Broadhempston to Fermoys
restaurant at Ipplepen, where there was plenty of time for interesting
conversation over our drinks and scones. The homeward route took its
toll somewhat, but Daniel was keen to come again next week for another
exciting adventure with South Dartmoor CTC! |

Weather: Dry |
| By the time we reached Staverton, Gavin's knees were
starting to get painful again. Darkness had already fallen, so a smart
left turn seemed the sensible solution, taking us home the shortest route
via Green Lane. We concluded our final evening ride of the season with
drinks and a chat at Crofters. |
| Sunday 22 September |
Day ride
(car-assisted) - Lydford Gorge (20m) |
0945-1600 |
| 3 Present: Stan
F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Sunny
and warm |
| Michael's last minute bottom
bracket bearing repairs delayed our start somewhat, but at 10.15 we finally
set off across the open moor with bikes stowed carefully in the back of the
Volvo estate. Our plan was vague: park near Peter Tavy and explore the
countryside towards Lydford Gorge. The parking was easy, and almost
immediately we noticed a cycle route sign of the kind we had been following
in Switzerland - most unusual for England. This was National Cycle
Network route 27. We didn't know where it was going, or where it had
come from, but we decided to follow it and see what adventures it would
bring. To our surprise the route immediately took us down a very narrow
path, alongside a river and over a narrow bridge surrounded by woodland.
It was the kind of place you could settle down for an afternoon knap and
lose hours of the day in peaceful communion with nature! Continuing,
we were led across the Tavistock main road and down across some delightful
new countryside. After a mile or two the sign took us off road again,
along a moorland path that was not clearly defined. There were no
further signs to guide us, and we quickly found ourselves at the entrance to
a private house, a hundred metres further south than we should have been.
A course correction brought us back on track again, but we rode right past
the place where we were supposed to leave the moor - no signs jumped up and
grabbed our attention, so maybe we were supposed to use a special cycle
route map? To cut a long story short we continued along what seemed to
be the right track until we had passed through a ford and ended up in the
middle of a very grassy meadow that had no path and no exit. Only then
did we realise that we had taken a wrong turn, so considerable backtracking
was required.
It was all good fun though, and soon we were enjoying our packed lunches
on the grass near the National Trust entrance to Lydford Gorge.
Disappointingly we were unable to view the gorge without paying a hefty
entrance fee, so the ice cream shop had to suffice for our entertainment.
We had been riding downhill for much of the morning, and now we continued
the trend with a very long descent that followed the other side of the
gorge. It was here that Michael's missing map became a problem: we had
to guess the route that linked the edge of one map to the edge of another.
None of us knew the area at all, and we were working to a deadline as Stan
had to be back at Buckfastleigh by 4pm. Fortunately our first guess
was the correct one, leading us down into the gorge and up the very long
climb on the other side towards Brentor.
There was not quite enough time to climb the little hill on which Brentor
church resides, so we sped off for yet more downhill nearly all the way back
to Peter Tavy. We we loaded our bikes back into the car we pondered
how it could have been possible to have spent most of the day riding
downhill and still end up at the same height! This has been a
tremendous outing, taking us to brand new territory and new adventues - I'm
sure we'll be arranging more during the coming year. And as for those
cycle paths, we'll make a point of exploring as many as we can from now on. |
| Friday 20 September |
Evening ride: Staverton |
1900-2050 |
| 3 Present: Stan F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Cloudy but dry |
| This turned out to be another highly enjoyable excursion
through the quiet lanes around Landscove, punctuated with intriguing
conversation, numerous bats and owls and a stunning full moon overlooking
the distant lights of Totnes. During the ride we decided to run our
first car-assisted ride of the year on Sunday, to the new lanes and scenery
of north-west Dartmoor. |
| Sunday 15 September |
Day ride - Hennock
Reservoirs (SX 806837) 36m |
1000-1700 |
| 3 Present: Stan
F, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Cloudy
start, sunny later |
| The Brookside Tearooms at Bovey
Tracey had changed considerably since our last visit to the town. The
owners, wishing to "downsize" the establishment and raise some new funds,
had built a new cafe in the once-attractive gardens and sold the rest of the
grounds for housing. New stone walls had been constructed all around
but had been topped with an ugly layer of cement. We weren't
impressed, but at least the refreshments were acceptable. Gavin was having
considerable knee pains today so we took our time on the ascent of Hospital
Hill and settled on a grassy spot beside Trenchford reservoir for lunch and
a chat in the afternoon sun. It was a lazy afternoon and the time
quickly slipped away.
The North Bovey ford proved too much of a temptation for Stan, but sadly
the soft sand in the deepest section foiled his attempt, leaving him with
very wet feet. There was time to dry out in the sunshine again at
Hound Tor as we enjoyed ice creams and drinks. |
| Friday 13 September |
Evening ride: Holne |
1900-2130 |
| 5 Present: Stan F, Michael J, Oliver L,
Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| By taking the old Ashburton road to River Dart Country Park,
riding through the park and following the woodland track up towards Holne we
reversed one of our usual routes and turned it into a new experience for all
of us. Dusk was falling as we rode through Holne with the scent of
freshly-dried hay all around, but there was still time for the long dark
climb through Coombe to Cross Furzes before we made the final descent to
Buckfastleigh. |
| Sunday 8 September |
Morning Ride |
1000-1245 |
| 2 Present: Stan F, Michael J |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| Only Michael & Stan turned up for the planned ride to
Mothecombe Beach, so we agreed on a shorter ride to Diptford which gave us
plenty of time to chat. Along the way we met Torbay easy riders and
joined them for the ride back towards South Brent. |
| Friday 6 September |
Evening ride: Totnes |
1900-2130 |
| 6 Present: Tao B, Stan F, Luke F, John
H, Michael J, Philip O |
Weather: Showers |
| We didn't know where we were heading at the start of the
ride, but a number of semi-random decisions and junctions brought us via
Dean and Rattery to Totnes as dusk was falling. The cycle path to Dartington was interesting in the near darkness. John Hayes was struck
in the face by something he described as "warm, furry, around 250g and
unattached to the nearby plant life". After dismissing owl droppings
and boom microphones we settled on a bat with defective radar as the most
probable explanation. Returning along Colston Road, Stan had the
misfortune to break his chain. In view of the time he decided to take
up Luke's offer of a tow, and later Tao and Philip's offer of a push, the
latter offering high-speed cruising of the most enjoyable kind! |
| Sunday 1 September |
Afternoon Ride |
1415-1645 |
| 5 Present: Ryan E, Luke F, John H, Michael J,
Gavin P |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| We were all surprised to find John Hayes waiting at the
start after an absence of several years. He's been getting a 2.1 in
his computer science degree, but now that he's back in Devon again for a
while he hopes to come on many more rides. Our planned route to the
Landscove cafe had to be shortened a little after Ryan came off on the
newly-laid gravel surface of Colston Road, but we still managed to enjoy
good conversation and high quality refreshments in the shade of the mature
trees in the cafe's garden. |
| Monday 19 August |
Switzerland
Tour |
13 days |
| 5 Present: Tao B,
Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Hot
and very sunny |
| Our epic adventure to Switzerland
proved to be one of our best tours ever. We were blessed with
excellent weather almost every day with only a couple of showers in the
whole two weeks. Clocking up more than 615 miles in 11 days of cycling
we managed to view all regions of this magnificent country from the fabulous
network of cycle paths that make Britain's treatment of cyclists appear
stone-aged. Huge lakes, clean rivers, gentle gradients, picturesque
houses, good food and a friendly population helped make this a very
memorable tour. Follow the Switzerland link for a
full report on the tour.
A DVD will be published in due course. |
| Friday 16 August |
Evening ride: Staverton |
1900-2115 |
| 7 Present: Tao B, Julian D, Luke F,
Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| There was plenty of talk of Switzerland on this final
evening ride before the big tour. We climbed Green Lane and detoured
back through Staverton for some frisbee-throwing fun in the park. |
| Sunday 11 August |
Day ride - Plym Valley
cycleway (SX 520612) 52m |
1000-1720 |
| 6 Present: Tao B,
Julian D, Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Damp
start, dry later |
| Drizzle at the start turned into
spells of heavier rain that threatened to incite a mutiny by the time we
reached Ivybridge. The forecast had promised a dryer afternoon,
however, so we followed the cycle path to Plympton and then took to the
newly-tarmaced Plym Valley cycleway as far as the wooded glade that has been
our lunch spot on this ride since anyone can remember. Spells of light
rain endured for a mile or two longer, but once we emerged at the other end
of the tunnel, new rays of sunshine proved the forecast correct. Burrator
Reservoir was fairly busy, but the ice cream saleswoman had to manage
without our business today. Julian briefly considered taking the rough
moorland track to Princetown but eventually agreed with the rest of us that
it would probably be wet and hard going as a result of the earlier rain.
Instead we took Tao's recommendation of a shortcut along the old railway
line down to the main road, which actually proved quite interesting.
On arrival at Princetown we were disappointed to see that the extravagant
Lords Tearooms had now shut down, leaving only the original Foxtor cafe that
had earned a somewhat lackluster reputation over the years. A change
of ownership at the Foxtor, however, meant no budgies or table service but a
greatly improved menu - the hot fruit scones and delicious hot chocolate
made the whole stop highly memorable. Suitably refreshed we proceeded
with good speed through Hexworthy to Holne and Buckfastleigh, where we all
felt need of hot showers, good food and a long night's sleep. |
| Friday 9 August |
Evening ride: Staverton |
1900-2115 |
| 3 Present: Julian D, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Damp |
| With inclement weather all about we chose an easy route
along Colston Road to Staverton riverside, pushing the bikes along the final
section to ensure the natives were not upset. There was time for a few
minutes of frisbee throwing in Staverton playing fields on the homeward
journey past Caddaford. |
| Sunday 4 August |
Afternoon Ride |
1415-1530 |
| 5 Present: Tao B, Julian D, Michael J,
Oliver L, Eliot W |
Weather: Warm and very wet |
| Julian made the effort to come out today, and we were all
looking forward to an extended jaunt to Venford and Dartmeet. The
first drops of rain began as we left the strart, and by the time we had
reached Buckfast we were forced to take shelter under an unsubstantial bush.
The rain just got heavier as we waited, and soon we were as wet under the
bush as we would have been out on the road. A unanimous decision was
taken to head for home for a social, with the possibility of heading out
again if the weather improved. It didn't, so we enjoyed a few choice
videos. |
| Friday 2 August |
Evening ride: Chalk Ford |
1900-2130 |
| 5 Present: Tao B, Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Oliver had been carrying out major upgrades to his bike for
the past three evenings, so it was no great surprise that he wasn't ready
for the ride by 7pm. We agreed to wait for him at Michael's house, and
passed the time by hearing how he had managed to remove his cranks with a
hammer and then fix them back on again with the chainset on the left hand
side - so tightly that he couldn't then remove them with a hammer again!
He finally arrived at 7.40. We had been happy to wait, until he told
us that he had been chatting with a friend on the telephone for part of the
time! The original plan had been to ride to Chalk Ford and then continue
through Holne to River Dart Country Park, making a fairly ambitious evening.
The late start had not totally dashed those plans, but when Oliver turned
his front tube into a tea strainer on the way down the stony track to
Scoriton, things looked less than promising. Twenty minutes later and
we were still optimistic, choosing the direct route to Holne. Luke's
puncture on a smooth road climb was the last straw, however, so we headed
for home with all speed before some other punishment was administered. |
| Sunday 28July |
Day ride -
Lannacombe Beach
(SX 802371) 49m |
1000-1825 |
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Very
hot & sunny |
| This was officially recognised as
the hottest day of the year so far - and we certainly knew it. We were
late starting as a result of another of Luke's famous punctures, but we
didn't seriously contemplate shortening the ride as Lannacombe is a superbly
unspoilt beach and we wanted to push ourselves in preparation for the tour.
Our route through Rattery, Moreleigh and Chillington took us past no shops
whatsoever, so Tao was unable to buy lunch and Oliver was unable to
replenish his water supply. We found a peaceful grassy spot above the
rocks at Lannacombe for lunch that commanded panoramic views of the beach,
sea and rock pools. There was time for a climbing expedition right
down to the sea, but eventually we had to set off for the arduous journey
home in conditions that could only be described as sub-tropical. We
were aiming initially for Torcross, where we knew we could buy drinks and
ice creams. It was nearly 3.45 before we were ready to leave again,
and with another choice of routes we again chose the more strenuous, through
Totnes, because it avoided retracing any of our outward path.
The heat and strain began to show, but we persevered and after yet
another puncture for Michael finally arrived home at around 6.25. We
all knew we had endured a tough ride, but after showers and a meal we felt
that wonderful feeling of fit healthiness that only cyclists can experience. |
| Friday 26 July |
Evening ride: Lambsdown |
1900-2145 |
| 5 Present: Tao B, Stan F, Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Our glorious summer season of cycling continued with another
moorland track ride, this time over Skerraton Down to Lambsdown. A
tough climb brought us swiftly to the start of the rough track, and it
wasn't much longer before we were riding into the sunset amongst the
cattle and heather. The extensive views were so clear tonight and the
sunshine so glorious that we couldn't resist the temptation to sit down for
a few moments of admiration. Descending rapidly down the rough moorland to
Cross Furzes we detoured homewards via Coombe, where Michael had to deal
with a puncture before we could complete the ride. |
| Sunday 21July |
Day ride -
Redlake Tramway
(SX 645668) 19m |
1000-1630 |
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Warm & sunny |
| Glorious summer sunshine blessed
one of our favourite rides of the year, to the heart of the South Moor and
the isolated Redlake Tramway. It's not exactly a long ride, so we felt
we had the time to call in at the South Brent cafe for cold drinks and
teacakes. When Tao had eventually worked out that the shop marked
Newsagent was not the best place to buy his lunch, we proceeded at a
leisurely pace to Wrangaton golf course. We all noticed the pair of
golfers stop what they were doing and turn to face us as we cycled towards
them. The look became even more fixed the closer we got, so we knew
they were brewing up for a complaint. Apparently we were cycling 3
metres too far to the left - we were on the "fairway" and not the marked
bridle path! To be honest it all looked pretty much the same to us,
being a moorland golf course. Still, being obliging people we did as
we were asked - and then found that the path itself crossed the "fairway" a
few metres farther along! The climb up Ugborough Beacon was tough in the
mid-day heat, but the wind was fresher on top and the views were absolutely
stunning: from the rocky tor on top of the Beacon we could see the coast
from Plymouth right around to Teignmouth, and all the land was laid out in
front of us like a map. An enjoyable lunchtime was followed by a truly
adventurous ride across open moorland to the Tramway and on for several
miles to the point near Redlake itself. There was no hurry, and so
plenty of time for Michael and Oliver to try out their digital cameras.
This was primarily to augment the new photo galleries recently added to the
club's web site, but Tao seemed to think it was for his own personal album
as he maneuvered skillfully down a steep slope past the grazing cattle.
Having crossed another section of open moorland through knee-high moor
grass interspersed with cotton grass, we proceeded falteringly down the
rough slope to the warm and sheltered valley of the river Avon. From
here, the narrow path wound its way downstream towards the Avon Dam and our
familiar route home along the Abbots Way. So ended another
exhilarating summer adventure. |
| Friday 19 July |
Evening ride: Avon Dam |
1900-2145 |
| 6 Present: Tao B, Stan F, Luke F,
Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Another perfect cycling evening, and once again we were
lured to the open moor. So, unfortunately, were the midges, until
recently almost unheard of in Devon: on this particular evening the midge
bites were so bad that we might easily have been in the Scottish Highlands.
Our route took us through Dean Prior, past Nurston farm and up to Shipley
Bridge, where the last of the visitors were packing their bags to leave.
The path up to the dam was almost deserted, allowing us to enjoy its
splendor without interruption. There was a little time for quiet
contemplation as we sat beside the reservoir, then we pushed on to the
Abbots Way and the path across the open moor that we cherish so dearly.
A very thin veil of summer evening mist lay across the whole region,
dampening all sounds to leave us in total silence. Amidst this eerie
stillness we sped through the glorious aromas of grass and pollen to Cross Furzes and hence back to Buckfastleigh, feeling much invigorated by our
adventures. |

Day ride -
Goodrington Sands |
1000-1820 |
| 5 Present: Tao B,
Ryan E, Luke F, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Very
hot, very sunny |
| Michael's extended family were
having a fun day at Goodrington Sands today, so we decided to join them.
The ride got off to a slow start when Luke inadvertently punctured Ryan's
front tube whilst trying to add some air, but eventually we set off for the
direct lane route through Staverton and Red Post with everyone feeling on
top of the world. We managed to achieve nearly four hours at Goodrington
in probably the best sunshine of the year so far, each of us spending the
time in a variety of ways. Luke and Ryan spent most of the time in
Quay West trying to get value from the £6.50 entry fee; the rest of us
enjoyed crabbing with the youngsters, pedal boats, walking, chatting and all
the other things one can do at one of Devon's most attractive beaches.
This certainly was a ride with a difference.
When we finally left at 4.45 we were all quite tired from all the
activity, but the journey home still flew by fairly quickly. One or
two members wished they had applied their sunscreen more liberally! |

Evening ride |
1900-2135 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Luke F, Michael J |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| After enjoying the rural lanes past Colston Farm we took the
cycle path from Dartington Cider Press Centre through to the KEVIC playing
fields. Two hot air balloons drifted effortlessly past us in close
proximity while we played with our super-fast frisbees in the brilliant
sunset, making a spectacular
site. We toyed with the idea of chasing after them, but eventually
contented ourselves with simply watching them until they disappeared over
Totnes castle. We concluded another excellent ride with a short tour
of Dartington and a tough climb over the top past Pennywell Farm. |

Afternoon ride |
1415-1732 |
| 4 Present: Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin
P, Eliot W |
Weather: Warm and mainly sunny |
| Everyone was fit and eager for an energetic ride, so we set
our sites ambitiously on Dr Blackall's Drive, a magnificent track running
from the top of Dartmeet hill to the higher reaches of Newbridge hill.
To start the ride we climbed Auswell hill from Ashburton, which in itself is
one of the most intimidating hills in the area. Rolling down the other
side with the moorland air whistling past us we couldn't resist a stop at
the Roundhouse Cafe in Buckland, still unsold despite a heavy advertising
campaign. The hot Eccles cakes and teacakes set us up well for the
next climbs past Buckland church and up to the Widecombe road. After
all that, the final mountain from Ponsworthy to the top of Dartmeet hill
seemed a breeze. As usual, the views from the track across the thickly
wooded and steep-sided Dart valley were stunning and warranted a pause for
quiet contemplation. There followed a speedy and exciting downhill
offroad challenge that left us all with the highest of spirits and longing
for next week's ride.
Michael has now acquired his new digital camera, but unfortunately he
didn't bring it on this ride. Expect to see photographs and short mpeg
movies in our web gallery before too long! |

Evening ride |
1900-2125 |
| 5 Present: Tao B, Stan F, Michael J,
Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| Another perfect evening, so once again we headed moorwards,
this time past Buckfast Abbey and up the long climb to Cross Furzes.
The track to Lud Gate quickly brought us out onto the open moor where a
glorious sunset greeted us. There was time to savour the magnificent
views that spanned all the way to Teignmouth and beyond before enjoying the
freedom of the moorland descent to Chalk Ford. At times like this we
know why we like to live in South Devon. Having crossed the little wooden
bridge over the river in this isolated but beautiful location we proceeded
up the windy path to the gate and so to the long but stony descent to the
village of Scoriton. As the evening was still young there was time to
divert via Michelcombe for a return through the famous "Slalom" track in
Hembury Woods - Stan was very impressed with the new rugged tyres on his
touring bike which made the experience far more enjoyable. |

Ten Tors event |

| |
Weather: Dry
start |
| For the first time ever we had no
takers for our Ten Tors event. |
| Friday 28 June |
Evening ride |
1900-2100 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Michael J, Phillip O |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| A perfect midsummer's evening lured us moorwards - through
Ashburton and up Auswell hill to Buckland in the moor. The views were
magnificent, and as we waited by Buckland church the tower bell chimed the
hour through the stillness. Spitchwick Common was well populated by a
group of school children playing ball games, but their laughter merely added
to the magical atmosphere that was to be found everywhere this evening.
After a contented chat overlooking the river we headed homewards via Hembury
woods. |

Hope
Cove (SX 674398) 45m |
1000-1735 |
| 3 Present: Luke
F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Hot
and sunny |
Summer was here at last, and we
were all looking forward to this energetic ride to Hope Cove with eager
anticipation. Our outward route took us through South Brent and
Loddiswell, by which time Oliver was beginning to feel the effects of his
complete absence of cycling whilst at university. The quaint old shops
near the cove provided a good range of food for lunch, which we enjoyed on
the sandy beach of Outer Hope. The area was relatively quiet, so we
were able to really enjoy the sea, sand and seagulls. Before leaving
we did a quick tour of Inner Hope, complete with its crab pots and lookout
shelter. We had already decided that the Avon Mill cafe near Loddiswell
would be providing afternoon refreshments, so without further ado we
retraced our outward route as far as the river Avon and enjoyed tea,
elderflower cordial and muffins in the quiet shade of the small cafe.
It was nearly 4pm when we left to climb the steep hill to Woodleigh.
From there we returned home via Moreleigh, Diptford and Rattery after a
thoroughly exhilarating ride. |
| Friday 21 June |
Evening ride |
1900-2150 |
| 3 Present: Luke F, Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Rain |
| After a wonderful, sunny week the rain came down in torrents
especially to ruin our evening ride. Everyone present preferred a
social, so computer games were the order of the evening. |
| Thursday 20 June |
Evening ride (junior) |
1800-2000 |
| |
Weather: Fine |
| No excuses for the zero turnout tonight, so it was decided
that this will be the last junior ride of the season. |
| Sunday 16 June |
Day ride -
Tuckenhay (25m) |
1000-1510 |
| 3 Present: Luke
F, Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Damp
start, dry later |
| The constant drizzle at the start
of the ride persuaded us to head southwards and to keep within sprinting
distance of home! The vegetarian restaurant at Dartington provided
very enjoyable (if expensive) refreshments, and when we emerged the drizzle
had all but disappeared. We rode up Totnes Downhill, took the steep
descent to Bow Bridge and decided to climb Corkscrew Hill in search of a
lunch spot. Sure enough, not too far from the top we found a footpath
that led through an opening in the hedge, and from our position at the top
of the field we enjoyed panoramic views of the whole Tuckenhay valley. We
didn't want to be too late home today, so we proceeded to Forces Cross and
Moreleigh, returning via Rattery. |
| Friday 14 June |
Evening ride |
1900-2150 |
| 4 Present: Luke F, Michael J, Dominic
K, Gavin P |
Weather: Cloudy |
| We all felt like an adventurous ride this evening, so after
following the back lanes to Ashburton and having a look through the gates of
Rendells auction rooms at Stonepark we set off for the big climb to
Halshanger Cross and the even bigger climb on to Cold East Cross. The
moor was still and quiet apart from the numerous sheep and skylarks that
dotted the landscape. Next we took the track descent to Buckland and
then continued down through the woods to Spitchwick Common. Luke
managed to throw the frisbee into the river but he seemed to enjoy the task
of retrieving it despite the coldness of the water and rockiness of the
river bed. We were fortunate enough to spot two deer crossing the lane as
we climbed through the woods to Gallant Le Bower - the second time this
season. As it was still light we decided to take the track through
Hembury Woods, bringing us home at the slightly later than usual time of
9.50. |
| Thursday 13 June |
Evening ride (junior) |
1800-2000 |
| |
Weather: Cloudy |
| No takers again for the junior ride, although many of the
youngsters were away for the week with the school. We'll see what
happens next week. |
| Sunday 9 June |
Day ride - Hunter's Path (SX
736899) 39m |
1000-1600 |
| |
Weather: Heavy
rain |
| Luke, Michael and Gavin met at
Crofters but decided to abandon the ride again in view of the unpleasant
weather. Perhaps next week we'll actually get to have a ride! |
| Friday 7 June |
Evening ride |
1900-2130 |
| |
Weather: Heavy rain |
| Michael and Dominic met at the start, but in view of the
very unpleasant weather conditions we just had a chat and went home. |
| Thursday 6 June |
Evening ride (junior) |
1800-2000 |
| |
Weather: Rain |
| Michael arrived at the start to find nobody there -
hardly surprising in view of the weather and the half term holidays.
The ride was therefore cancelled. |
| Sunday 2 June |
Afternoon ride - Landscove
tearooms |
1415-1715 |
| 4 Present: Julian D, Luke F,
Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Cloudy |
| There was a general consensus that a tearoom
should be on this afternoon's itinerary. With this in mind we arranged
a circuitous route along Colston Road to Staverton, where we found many more
people than usual walking the riverside path alongside the steam railway.
Mother Hubbard's tearooms at Landscove were equally busy, but we had already
planned to eat outside in the Olde English garden so we weren't at all put
out. The owner's dogs provided the main entertainment - next to
Julian's numerous text messages! |
| Friday 31 May |
Evening ride -
Skerraton Down |
1900-2115 |
| 5 Present:
Julian D, Luke F,
Michael J, Gavin P, Eliot W |
Weather: Warm
and sunny |
| This was a truly perfect summer's
evening, so we set off up the hill past Nurston farm to the rough track that
leads up to the open moor of Skerraton Down. Part-way along the track,
Gavin decided to look over the hedge and was amazed to discover a secret
golf course way up there on the moor. Well, it couldn't have been that
secret because there were at least 20 golfers roaming around. After
close inspection we decided it was a private course owned and set up by the
nearby farmer. The moor was warm and still tonight - a real treat after a
busy day. There was time to play with the frisbees, chat, and examine
an extraordinary sea of bluebells in a steep-sided valley leading to a
woodland. An exhilarating descent across the moor brought us
eventually to Cross Furzes and the long hill down to Wallaford Road. |
| Wednesday 29 May |
Evening ride (junior) -
River Dart Country Park - 5m |
1800-2030 |
| 7 Present: Michael Jones, James Manning
(10), Ben Parker (11), Gavin Pearson, Calum Searle (10), Gordon Searle,
Rachel Steward (11) |
Weather: Dry |
| Calum was feeling a little under the weather today after his
10th birthday celebrations, but he put on a brave face as we tackled the
steep ascent through Hembury Woods. Rachel wondered when the hills
would ever end, but soon we turned right and joined the long track descent
through the woods that leads to the Park. On the way down, Calum
managed to come off, and that in turn made Ben lose control so that he too
came off! There was no serious damage however, and everyone enjoyed
the final section down to the road with its narrow leafy boundaries and
sharp turns. The park itself was quite busy with tourists, so we quickly
rode through to the lower Hembury track where narrow paths, concealed mine
entrances, fallen tree trunks and superb river views entertained us all the
way back to Buckfastleigh. |
