This is an archive of all our ride reports from 2003.
| Sunday 28 December 2003 |
Morning Ride: Tuckenhay
(25m) |
1100-1630 |
| 7 Present: Louis B (12), Tao B,
Will B (14), Michael J, James M (12), Keir M, Ashley M (15) |
Weather: Sunny but cold |
| Everyone was eager for a more adventurous ride
today, so we headed straight for Totnes via Colston Road and the cycle path,
arriving at the High Street cafe by around 12.00. Most bought lunches,
including Michael who ordered a mushroom pizza that was cut neatly into 6
slices. Will thought the prices were too high, so Michael foolishly
offered him a slice of pizza for £1: within seconds he only had three slices
left, thanks to the added interest of Louis! The afternoon sun was still
high enough to allow our planned 20-mile ride, and Ashley was soon taking
photographs from the viewpoints on Totnes Downhill. Others commented
on the fact that Keir was wearing out his shoe leather on the climb rather
than his tyres, but it was so good to see him again that we didn't press him
too much on the point. The downhill to Bow Bridge presented a
challenge to some of the youngsters in the form of the ford across the
shallow but fast flowing river. Tao and Keir egged them on in the hope
of an entertaining show, but Michael's words of caution against the cold
finally won the day.
Tuckenhay and its old creek looked delightful in the afternoon sunshine
even though the tide was out. This had to be the far point of our
ride, however, if we were to return before dusk, so we veered right past the
mill stream and followed the valley through Harbertonford and on to the
final climb from Tigley to Rattery. Having reached the twenty mile
point at Tigley we were now heading into "extra miles": combined with the
plummeting temperatures this began to take its toll on the younger riders.
When they got close to the top, however, they all found plenty more energy
and we were soon warming ourselves by the gas fire at Buckfastleigh and
enjoying hot drinks all round. |
| Saturday 27 December |
Social: Christmas
Special |
1700-2300 |
| 6 Present: Louis
B (12), Tao B, Will B (14), Michael J, John S, Callum S (5) |
|
| John Stuart and son Callum were the surprise guests for this
seasonal evening of mince pies, DVDs and computer games. |
| Sunday 21 December |
Morning Ride: Buckfast
(3m) |
1100-1230 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Michael J, James M (12) |
Weather: Cold and wet |
| The forecast "sunshine with occasional showers"
turned out to be more "continuous rain, with occasional sunny spells when
South Dartmoor CTC are not cycling". Buckfast offered a suitable cafe
stop while we ascertained the truth of the revised forecast: the best option
then seemed to be a fairly direct route home. There was plenty of time
during the afternoon to organise another Music Quiz for those who had not
made the Friday social. |
| Friday 19 December |
Social: Music
Quiz |
1900-2200 |
| 5 Present: Luke
F, Michael J, Oliver L, Tim O, Gavin P |
|
| We used a slightly revised format for our popular Music
Quiz, putting more emphasis on full MIDI implementations and original
recordings. There was a lot of fun throughout the evening, but it was
Gavin and Luke who eventually won the day over Tim and Oliver by just three
points. |
| Sunday 14 December |
Christmas Lunch ride:
Ilsington Country Hotel
(22m) |
1000-1630 |
| 9 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Will B (14), Jake C (15), Michael J, Oliver L, James M (12),
Jamie M (15), Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny but cold |
| Our plans to depart promptly at 10am were
disrupted by several events, chief of which was that Jamie thought the ride
started at 11! To make matters worse, Oliver decided to pace around
for a full 20 minutes until Jamie arrived before discovering that he had a
puncture. When we finally got moving we decided to stick with our
original plans of pushing the ride length over 20 miles, to help those
youngsters working towards their Stage 2 certificate. Tao, Will and Louis
had been waiting so long for us at Heathfield that they had been able to fix
a puncture as well as getting cold. Everyone did well on the climb
from Bovey Tracey to Ilsington, however, and we were soon jumping in the
hotel swimming pool, relaxing in the jacuzzi and sweltering in the sauna.
Finally the time came for the main event, and as usual the hotel provided
a delicious meal and a quality atmosphere. When the awards and
Christmas announcements were over, the Burgess family headed straight for
Newton Abbot as they didn't all have lights, and the rest of us took the
short route via Birchanger and Halsanger to Ashburton, arriving home just
before dusk. |
| Friday 12 December |
Social: Games
evening |
1900-2200 |
| 4 Present: Louis
B (12), Tao B, Will B (14), Michael J |
|
| Swimming didn't appeal this evening, so Tao used the time to
do some more work on our Norway video while the rest of us enjoyed the usual
computer games. |
| Sunday 7 December |
Morning ride: Skerraton
Down
(8m) |
1100-1300 |
| 8 Present: Jake C (15), Michael J, James M (12),
Jamie M (15), Tim M (13), Ashley M (15), Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny |
| New rider Tim used the long climb from Dean to
Skearraton Farm to demonstrate that he is every bit as athletic as his
brother Jamie. The stony track up to the moor was especially
appreciated by James, who undoubtedly follows his older brother's
preferences for off-road riding. It also gave Joe an opportunity to
tell us of his scuba diving exploits - the explanation for his absence for
the past few months. Once we were though the gateway to the open moor
there was a short refreshment stop in the morning sunshine, then a final
climb past the cattle to the high ridge - exposed to string winds and
panoramic views. The downhill to Cross Furzes took us past a group of
long-haired and colourful Dartmoor ponies chasing about in their paddock.
James just had to ride the ford of course, but he claims he didn't get wet
feet. The final downhill brought us back just in time for Jake to make
his family lunch appointment at 1pm. The rest of the group enjoyed an
afternoon social at Crofters.
All our younger riders are progressing well through the training scheme
and will soon be ready for harder rides. We plan to offer some
Saturday rides on an occasional basis for those working towards Stage 3 -
watch the web site for announcements. |
| Friday 5 December |
Social: Games
evening |
1900-2200 |
| 4 Present: James
B (13), Michael J, Gavin P, Tommy R (12) |
|
| Some of our younger riders don't seem to have realised that
they can attend club socials on Fridays! Those who attended this
evening enjoyed some quiet, uninterrupted time on the networked PC games. |
| Sunday 30 November |
Morning ride: Landscove
(9m) |
1100-1330 |
| 7 Present: Louis B (13), Will B
(14),
Jason D (11), Michael J, James M (12), Ashley M (15), Gavin P |
Weather: Mainly wet |
| The weather was not at all promising when we met
at the start, but our five youngsters impressed us by insisting on a ride
regardless of the rain! We took the old road to Ashburton and climbed
Chuley hill, but a few minutes later there was a delay while we fetched
Jason back from a wrong turn and fixed Louis' rear brake. It's just as
well that this was the moment for a dry spell! We had to include a muddy
track to keep James happy, then we headed towards Landscove and home before
rain and cold feet dampened the enthusiasm. As usual, the afternoon
was while away happily with a games social at Crofters. |
| Friday 28November |
Social: Games
evening |
1900-2130 |
| 3 Present: Kane E
(11), Michael J, Gavin P |
|
| We all enjoyed playing a new GameCube game, Super Smash Bros
Melee, for most of the evening. |
| Sunday 23 November |
Morning ride: Dartington
(12m) |
1100-1415 |
| 6 Present: Tao B, Will B
(14),
Michael J, James M (12), Ashley M (15), Gavin P |
Weather: Cold and grey,
with a spell of light rain |
| This week it had been Will's turn to get the
dreaded flu, but he still made a tremendous effort and turnout out for this
morning's ride on a day that threatened rain. We actually made it half
way along Colston road before we really noticed any drizzle, but it was a
little heavier at the top of Dartington hill and several of the younger
riders had no gloves. A change of destination from Totnes to
Dartington solved the problem and we were soon in Cranks vegetarian
restaurant enjoying their excellent range of drinks and cakes. James
and Ashley were unable to contain their hostile feelings about a meat-free
menu, however. We spent a few minutes observing the usual high prices of
china in the Cider Press Centre shop, then headed back up the hill towards
Rattery as the rain gradually fizzled out. The final leg of the
journey past Pennywell Farm was pleasant, although the cold air ensured that
Will descended very slowly to avoid frostbite! |
| Friday 21 November |
Social: Video evening |
1900-2200 |
| Social cancelled. |
| Sunday 16 November |
Morning ride: Avon Dam
(15m) |
1100-1355 |
| 4 Present: Jason D (11),
Michael J, Ashley M (15), Gavin P |
Weather: Bright and sunny |
| Jason sore throat left him feeling somewhat weak
after the first small climb, so he decided to go home while the rest of us
continued up the many climbs to Shipley Bridge and the delightful walk to
the reservoir. A chilly breeze took the shine off the views across the
choppy waters so we took shelter behind a gorse bush during the consumption
of refreshments. The whole experience of cycling the Abbots Way moorland
track was completely new to Ashley, who thoroughly enjoyed the brisk descent
to Chalk Ford without incident. This really was a perfect day for this
excellent ride. |
| Friday 14 November |
Social: Ten-pin
bowling |
1900-2200 |
| 2 Present: Michael J, Gavin P |
|
| Bowling this evening was at AMF Bowl, Torquay. There
was time for three games in the darkened alleys, highest score of 115 going
to Gavin (as usual)! |
| Sunday 9 November |
Morning ride: Spitchwick
(10m) |
1100-1345 |
| 4 Present: Will B (13), Tao
B, Josh H (11), Ashley M (15) |
Weather: Cloudy, occasional
showers |
| Michael and several other members were
recovering from flu today, so Tao led the group on a tough but enjoyable
ride to Spitchiwick, returning via Buckland and Ashburton. |
| Friday 7 November |
Social: Games
Evening |
1900-2200 |
| 4 Present: Kane E
(11), Josh H (11), Michael J, Gavin P |
|
| With several people suffering from flu, the few hardy
members who were able to come to this evening's social enjoyed the usual mix
of computer games - with surprisingly little competition for the available
equipment! |
| Sunday 2 November |
Morning ride: Fermoys
(19m) |
1100-1500 |
| 9 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Jake C (15), Kane E (11), Josh H (11), Michael J, James M (12), Jamie
M (15), Ashley M (15) |
Weather: Sunny, cold at
times |
| New rider Ashley performed incredibly well on
what turned out to be a very long first ride. We took the flatest,
most direct route to Fermoys to maximise our chances of reaching a
destination that many members had been asking to visit for several weeks.
Ultimately, reaching it did not prove a problem, and the availability of
half-priced roast meals for the children meant that everyone was thoroughly
rested and recharged before we started on the journey home. Louis and
James had the most difficulty with the last few miles, mainly because they
had pushed themselves to come on the ride even though they were suffering
from colds. Nevertheless we got everyone home by a reasonable time. |
| Friday 31 October |
Social: Badminton |
1900-2215 |
| 6 Present: Louis
B (12), Tao B, Will B (14), Kane E (11), Michael J, Conner M (9) |
|
| Our first badminton session of the new season had to include
some very basic training for Kane and Conner, who found it difficult to hit
the shuttle let alone serve with it! The other four players enjoyed
some entertaining games. |
| Sunday 26 October |
Morning ride: Holne
(12m) |
1100-1340 |
| 11 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Will B (14), Kane E (11), Josh H (11), Michael J, Oliver L, James
M (12), Ben P (12), Gavin P, David R |
Weather: Sunny, cold at
times |
| The end of British Summer Time left no excuses
for anyone to be either late or tired on this perfect autumnal morning.
We had only reached Buckfast when Josh's bike needed its wheel bearings
tightened, but there were no further problems and we were soon enjoying
refrshments and aerobie contests in the playpark at Holne. Louis
thought it would be a good idea to soak his head in the stream, but soon
began to pay the price as the cold air took its toll. The ride continued
along the woodland track to River Dart Country Park, offering plenty of fun
for our newer riders and helping them towards their first certificates.
The final road section from Ashburton to Buckfastleigh left plenty of time
for an afternoon games social at Crofters. |
| Friday 24 October |
Social: Games
evening |
1900-2215 |
| 8 Present: Ben C
(15), Jake C (15), Kane E (11), Josh H (11), Michael J, Conner M (9), Sean N (15),
Ben P (12) |
|
| A relatively quiet evening of computer games kept everyone
happy. |
| Sunday 19 October |
Morning ride: Dartington
(12m) |
1100-1405 |
| 10 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Will B (14), Jason D (11), Kane E (11), Josh H (11), Michael J, James
M (12), Keir M, Ben P (12) |
Weather: Cold but dry |
| New riders Jason and Kane helped to swell
numbers to the largest since June - and it was really good to see Keir,
James and Ben return to club riding after a long break. Once Jason
learned that high gears are good for going fast, he made good progress along
Colston Road, but after climbing the hill to Dartington Kane needed a rest
to recover from a stomach pain. This seemed like a cue for a cafe
stop, so we dropped down to the Cider Press Centre and, in a repeat of the 5
October ride, transferred from the long queue in Cranks restaurant to the
much shorter queue for the outdoor Muffins cafe around the corner.
Suitably refreshed from numerous cakes, hot chocolates and toasted cheese
sandwiches we set off once more for Staverton Bridge, where the steam train
arrived moments afterwards packed with late-season tourists.
There was just time for a short detour along the riverside path, but then we
really needed to head straight for home via Abham. Jason discovered
the sharpness of the corner bear Caddaford farm but the hedge lightened his
landing so he came out smiling.
Everyone had enjoyed the ride very much, but there was more fun during
the afternoon games social as four youngsters passed their puncture repair
test and received JTP certificates. |
| Friday 17 October |
Social: Cinema
Trip - Finding Nemo |
1830-2230 |
| 9 Present: Louis
B (12), Tao B, Will B (14), Jake C (15), Josh H (11), Michael J, Jamie M
(15), Sean N (15), Gavin P |
|
| This evening's cinema trip proved so popular that two cars
were required to provide transport to Plymouth. The film - Finding
Nemo - was excellent and kept everyone thoroughly entertained from beginning
to end. |
| Sunday 12 October |
Morning ride: Landscove
(12m) |
1100-1335 |
| 5 Present: Jake C (15),
Josh H (11), Michael
J, Jamie M (15), Gavin P |
Weather: Cloudy but dry |
| Jamie wanted to test his new bike, so we chose a
route that included as much off-road as we could find. From Green Lane
we took the track towards Abham electricity station, then climbed behind the
station to include the downhill track to Hole Farm. Staverton offered
the usual riverside path, but our plans then went somewhat astray as the
youngsters couldn't resist the temptation to skim stones on the fast-flowing
river. When the fun was finally over we decided to miss out Beaston track
and head for the cafe at Landscove. Our faint hope that it might have
been open was dashed on arrival, so we made the most of Michael's mobile
chocolate shop and headed back via Green Lane. Perhaps Fermoys cafe at
Ipplepen - open all year round - would be a good destination for next week's
ride! |
| Friday 10 October |
Social: Games
Evening |
1900-2200 |
| 3 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Gavin P |
|
| A combination of games, videos, hot chocolate drinks and
relaxed conversation yielded and enjoyable, informal social evening. |
| Sunday 5 October |
Morning ride: Dartington
(16m) |
1100-1500 |
| 4 Present: Tao B, Will B
(14), Michael
J, David R |
Weather: Sunny with a
slight chill in the air |
| Our new season of 11am morning rides was given a special send off this
morning by David Robinson, attending his first ride in several years.
Will also deserves mention for getting up before 6am so that he could cycle
back from his friend's house to be on the ride. We chose a leisurely ride
(for David's benefit) along Colston Road to the Cider Press Centre at
Dartington. The queue for Cranks restaurant was rather large so we
visited Muffins outdoor cafe for some delicious drinks and refreshments in
the morning sunshine. The cycle path to Totnes was delightful this
morning, affording David new insights into the activities of the
Buckfastleigh to Totnes steam railway. Our return route was through
Littlehempston and Staverton. |
| Friday 3 October |
Social: AGM |
1900-2200 |
| 2 Present:
Michael J, Tao B |
|
| A number of plans were agreed for the coming season that
should boost the Section's membership, including a revision of the Junior
Training Programme, publication of new information packs, heavy advertising
of the Section in as many locations as possible, later starts for Sunday
rides (for the benefit of those youngsters who don't like getting up early
on Sundays) and new parental consent forms. Changes commence 5
October, and all changes should have been rolled out within 2 weeks. |
| Sunday 28 September |
Day ride: Hamel Down
(26m) |
1015-1600 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Michael
J, Oliver L |
Weather: Warm & sunny |
| Everyone felt like making the last ride of our
summer season into a full day moorland ride, so we rode to Ashburton and up
the long climb of Auswell hill to Cold East Cross. Tao had recently
discovered a new moorland track, from Bonehill rocks to Natsoworthy, and
this morning he introduced the route to the club. The track was
rideable all the way and took us through some superb scenery - it really was
quite exciting to discover such a new excursion after so many years of
Dartmoor cycling. Widecombe was the planned lunch spot, and because we
were making such good time we decided to ride Hamel Down before lunch.
We enjoyed a short rest by the stream inside the gate before setting off up
the gradual climb past the RAF memorial and then riding along the long ridge
of Hamel Down for several miles. We hadn't ridden this route for a
good few years so the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable. After
the breakneck descent at the end we settled into the Green cafe at Widecombe
for a satifactory meal.
We still had plenty of time so Tao suggested Dr Blackall's drive,
ensuring that this was one of the most off-road and enjoyable rides we had
organised for many months. |
| Friday 26 September |
Evening ride: Staverton |
1900-2045 |
| 3 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm |
| We didn't attempt anything too strenuous for our
final evening ride of the season - just a spin along Colston Road to
Staverton and home through the lanes. |
| Sunday 21 September |
Day ride: Buckland in the
Moor (16m) |
1015-1300 |
| 3 Present: Michael
J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| Our planned cafe stop at the Round House, Buckland, had to be hastily
rearranged to the ice cream van at New Bridge when we discovered that the
former was now, finally, closed. While we were enjoying our
refreshments on the verge, two families of cyclists arrived with various
children accomodated in child seats and rann trailers. |
| Friday 19 September |
Evening ride: Venford
Reservoir |
1900-2045 |
| 2 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L |
Weather: Fairly warm |
| A long climb brought us to Venford Reservoir by
dusk. Plans to try the track descent to Michelcombe had to be
abandoned, however, owing to severe absence of light, so we just enjoyed a
long chat in the midst of this moorland tranquility and then returned home
via Hembury Woods. |
| Sunday 14 September |
Day ride: Mothecombe Beach
(36m) |
1015-1615 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Michael
J, Oliver L |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Everyone voted to extend today's morning ride to
a full day ride, and in view of the excellent weather, Mothecombe Beach or
Salcombe seemed good choices. We put off the final decision until we
had climbed Dean Hill, purchased a good lunch from the Plymco store at South
Brent and continued to Kitterford Cross. The rich blue skies - and the
long descent - finally swung the decision in favour of Mothecombe. We were
all a little sleepy this morning for various reasons, and the heat certainly
made the ride a little harder. By 12.30, however, we were descending
the final hill to the beach overlooking the Erme, and a few minutes later we
had found a private, shady spot where we could watch the many other beach
visitors as they juggled and played football in the distance.
One of the highlights of this ride is the ritual crossing of the Erme -
impossible at high tide and only really enjoyable at low tide.
Fortunately the tide was completly out today, so with bikes raised high and
shoes removed we waded across the shallow waters to the far bank. Tao
and Oliver, who hadn't fancied the prospect of getting wet to the waste,
found the whole adventure much more fun than they had anticipated.
With no map we just about remembered our way home, although the planned
detour through Aveton Gifford, Avon Mill cafe and Totnes had to be replaced
by California Cross garage and South Brent after some particularly unhelpful
signs led us astray! |
| Saturday 13 September |
Unscheduled Afternoon ride:
New Bridge (8m) |
1500-1815 |
| 4 Present: Ben C (15), Jake
C (15), Michael J, Jamie M (15) |
Weather: Warm and Sunny |
| To accommodate some of our younger riders who
could not make the scheduled rides, Michael arranged a special swimming ride
for them to the river Dart near New Bridge, making the most of the hot
weather. |
| Friday 12 September |
Evening ride: Sigford (10m) |
1900-2115 |
| 4 Present: Michael
J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm |
| A short ride took us through Ashburton towards
Sigford and then home on the lanes on the south side of the A38.
Michael's expensive front light was absolutely superb - until the battery
went flat. As Oliver said, it really does help if you charge it! |
| Sunday 7 September |
Morning ride: Staverton
(13m) |
1015-1300 |
| 4 Present: Tao B, Michael
J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Threatening rain |
| With the forecast rain apparently threatening
from all directions at the start of the ride we planned a loop route that
would never take us too far from Buckfastleigh. The ride was
interesting nevertheless, taking us up Green Lane, left to Baddaford, down
and up a cornfield track that we rarely use and then on to the Mother
Hubbard tearooms at Landscove for refreshments in the garden.
By now the sky was showing signs of clearing, so we opted for the
Staverton extension that took us down a couple of tracks and eventually
brought us home along Colston Road. |
| Friday 5 September |
Evening ride: River Dart
Country Park (9m) |
1900-2040 |
| 6 Present: Jake C (15), Michael
J, Oliver L, Jamie M (15), Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm |
| Several riders didn't have lights so we decided
to do a short but brisk ride that would get us home by dusk. The lower
Hembury track brought us quickly to Galant Le Bower cross and the
interesting track through the fields to River Dart Country Park. There
was a slight delay on the final section while Michael waited in the woods
for the rest of the group: unbeknown to him the particular track they had
taken had been diverted since he had last ridden it, so they were actually
waiting inside the park itself! |
| Sunday 31 August |
Morning ride: Harberton
(14m) |
1015-1300 |
| 4 Present: Tao B, Michael
J, Oliver L, Philip O |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| As Philip had managed to get the day off work to
come on a Sunday ride with us, we took a route along Colston Road to the
Totnes cyclepath that has been Philip's favourite ride for many years.
The cafe near Somerfield provided an enjoyable refreshment stop, boasting
outdoor seating and excellent food. A brisk climb through the town
brought us quickly to the lanes near Harberton, which in turn led us to the
discovery of a brand new track descent. Finding ourselves back in the
Follaton area of Totnes (we didn't have a map) ee followed the main road to
Tigley and then negotiated the steep climb to Rattery, Pennywell Farm and
home. |
| Friday 29 August |
Evening ride: Torbryan (13m) |
1900-2100 |
| 4 Present: Michael
J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| The steep lane past Caddaford Farm marked the
beginning of one of our more adventurous evening rides of recent weeks.
Continuing through Staverton at a good pace we were soon near Ipplepen and
turning off for the hamlet of Torbryan. The footpath that Michael had
in mind took a scenic route along the lower boundary of a field and then
past a luxurious country house. He had recollections of unfriendly
landowners in the big house, however, so we made sure to push our bikes
along the final stages. As it happened, only the ducks seemed
concerned at our presence as they viewed us cautiously from their secure
home on their lakeland island. Our return route took us through
Broadhempston and home via Green Lane. |
| Friday 22 August |
Evening ride: Skerraton
Down (10m) |
1900-2100 |
| 4 Present: Michael
J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| A hot air balloon race across Dartmoor kept us
entertained on the climb from Dean Prior to Skerraton Down - at least 7
balloons crossed our path, the sounds of hot burners pushing easily through
the still evening air. Views from the high moor were excellent as
always. There was enough time to try a couple of new tracks before we
took the usual descent to Cross Furzes and home. |
| Sunday 17 August |
Morning ride: Dr Blackall's
Drive
(15m) |
1015-1315 |
| 3 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| Today the weather was, for a change, comfortably
warm. From New Bridge we took the steep climb to Poundsgate and on to
the summit, where the absence of the usual ice cream van was a
disappointment. The track that is often called Dr Blackall's Drive
provided spectacular views of the steeply wooded Dart Valley and plenty of
fun on the descent. Today we stayed offroad all the way to New Bridge,
fortunately (from Michael's perspective anyway) missing the steep and
dangerous bit that some of our more experienced mountain bikers have
reported in the past. Ice creams and Hembury Woods concluded another
excellent ride. |
| Friday 15 August |
Evening ride: Landscove (10m) |
1900-2045 |
| 4 Present: Tao B, Michael
J, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| Tao was working from 11pm tonight so we did a
brisk but short ride that kept us in trim and took us through Ashburton,
Landscove and Caddaford. |
| Sunday 10 August |
Morning ride: Diptford
(15m) |
1015-1330 |
| 6 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Will B (13), Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Hottest day ever |
| Today was the hottest day on record, so we
didn't want to push too far into the afternoon. First stop was the
river Avon near South Brent, where the cool shade of the woods provided a
perfect spot for a dip and splash in the warm but refreshing waters.
Wet shirts kept us cool as we continued through Avonwick to Diptford, but
the temperatures were now beginning to climb even higher and there were no
more watering holes! We decided to return home via Rattery and then
spend the afternoon in the coolest place we could think of - the
air-conditioned cinema at Warner Village, Plymouth! |
| Friday 8 August |
Evening ride: Hembury Woods (9m) |
1900-2115 |
| 6 Present: Louis B (12),
Tao B, Will B (13), Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| This was an off-road ride that kept us near
shade or water from start to finish. We took the riverside track
through Hembury Woods, but the proposed swim didn't actually take place.
Instead, Michael fixed a puncture and the we rode up to Gallant Le Bower
cross through River Dart Country Park and up the woodland track that we had
always previously descended. At the top of Hembury we were able to
reunite a dog with its owner before making the final descent along the
Slalom track, bringing us back to our starting point as darkness fell. |
| Sunday 3 August |
Morning ride: Bradley
(23m) |
1015-1415 |
| 4 Present: Tao B, Will B
(13), Michael J, Oliver L |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Our planned ride to Bradley Woods ran into some
difficulties when we experimented with the lane signposted to Down Farms on
the far side of Ashburton. It proved very scenic and interesting, with
narrow twisty lanes meandering through old fashioned farms, picturesque
woodland and ancient bridges. It brought us out to a place that Tao
knew well, and when he said he knew the best way to Bradley from there, we
took him at his word. Unfortunately the route he has in mind included
a very long, very muddy, very overgrown track. Navigation took so long
and involved so many stings and scratches that we had to abandon the idea of
the Bradley Woods track altogether. Fermoys restaurant - also part of the
plan - was just too tempting to abandon even though we were running quite
late. Numerous freshly-squeezed orange juices provided us with the
sustenance for our brisk return home via Staverton. Will coped well
with his longest ride yet. |
| Friday 1 August |
Evening ride: Landscove (14m) |
1900-2115 |
| 4 Present: Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| A meandering ride took us up Green Lane and then
down the cross-field track to Landscove. We continued to Broadhempston
and then completed and enjoyable evening with a return through Staverton,
stopping only to aid an ailing pigeon near Riverford. |
| Sunday 27 July |
Morning ride: Haytor Vale
(18m) |
1015-1330 |
| 2 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L |
Weather: Sunny with showers |
| Our climb to Haytor Vale was interrupted for
twenty minutes while Michael and Oliver dammed up a stream behind Ashburton.
Actually, Michael just needed to eat some food, and the stream offered a
good excuse to sit and chat! Exploring Haytor Vale proved educational,
as none of us really knew it existed. There was time for ice creams
and drinks by the rock, then a speedy return via Ashburton brought us home
in time for lunch. |
| Friday 25 July |
Evening ride: Totnes (15m) |
1900-2145 |
| 6 Present: Tao B, Stan F,
Michael J, Oliver L, Philip O, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny periods |
| This evening's ride was punctuated with a number
of unscheduled stops, mainly related to Stan's recently-recovered Raleigh
touring bike, although Philip's drawing-pin puncture accounted for the delay
at Dartington. We enjoyed the track to Totnes at breakneck speed and
returned home via Rattery, giving Stan plenty to think about on the climbs. |
| Sunday 20 July |
Morning ride: Widecombe
(20m) |
1015-1330 |
| 2 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L |
Weather: Sunny with showers |
| The only showers of the day took place while we
were either enjoying drinks at Luke's house or enjoying drinks in the
Widecombe cafe. We maintained a good speed and arrived home just in
time for Oliver's Sunday lunch. |
| Friday 18 July |
Evening ride: Skerraton
Down (9m) |
1900-2145 |
| 3 Present: Michael J,
Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Warm and sunny |
| The weather was good for our first ride after
Norway, so Oliver's wish to see Skerraton Down became our command. |
| 4-16 July |
Tour: South West
Norway (495m) |
|
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Mainly
hot and sunny |
| This year's tour to Norway was a great success, owing partly
to the excellent weather, partly to the very welcoming and beautiful country
we were visiting, and partly because we all get on so well together on
tours. A full report on the tour will be published separately in due
course. |
| Sunday 29 June |
Morning ride: Ipplepen (15m) |
1015-1315 |
| 2 Present: Richard Gunter, Michael J |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| Our new rider Richard was much fitter than he had led us to
believe. We sped through Staverton, and our mad dash to Fermoys cafe
was only interrupted by two groups of somewhat frisky horses.
Conversation was enhanced by the excellent drinks and the wonderful summer
morning atmosphere in the Fermoy garden. The all-different return route
through Broadhempston prompted Richard to get his map out when he got home. |
| Friday 27 June |
Evening ride: Avonwick (12m) |
1900-2145 |
| 10 Present: Louis B (11), Tao B, Will B
(13), Jake C (15), Daniel H,
Michael J, Oliver L, Jamie M (15), Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Warm & sunny |
| Another warm evening prompted us to set off in
search of more water. The River Avon near the site of the old Avonwick
station proved quite acceptable, although we didn't have as much time to
enjoy it as we might have liked. We thought the only noteworthy buildings
in Diptford were the church and primary school - until we noticed a Post
Office sign above one of the houses on the other side of the village.
Keeping up a good pace we were soon climbing the hill from Rattery on our
way to Pennywell Farm and home. Once again, all the younger riders
performed excellently, except perhaps Keir who was much less energetic than
usual. |
| Sunday 22 June |
Morning ride: Avon Dam (12m) |
1015-1345 |
| 3 Present: Tao B, Michael J, Ben P (12) |
Weather: Hot with thundery clouds
gathering |
| There were just three of us out for the first of our new
Sunday morning rides. The heat prompted us all to head for water, so
Avon Dam became the assumed destination. A variation on our usul route
took us via Harbourneford to Bloody Pool. It was on the final descent
to Shipley Bridge that Tao tried to outdo Daniel's Friday Night Spectacular
with a tumble of his own. He ended up with a nasty graze on his nether
regions that kept him suitably smarting for at least an hour. After a
little watery fun on the Avon we sat on the grassy bank overlooking the
reservoir for a few minutes, watching the thundery clouds gathering in the
distance and trying to catch sight of the fish that must have been
responsible for the various splashes that we heard from time to time.
Moving on swiftly, we managed to get home before the afternoon's rain set
in. |
| Friday 20 June |
Evening ride: Spitchwick (12m) |
1900-2145 |
| 10 Present: Louis B (11), Tao B, Will B
(13), Daniel H,
Michael J, Philip O, Ben P (12), Gavin P, Joe V (12), Sam W (12) |
Weather: Hot & sunny |
| New rider Sam did well on the tough climb through Hembury
Woods, so we were soon speeding around the grassy banks that divide New Bridge car
park, eagerly awaiting our arrival at Spitchwick. Unfortunately,
Daniel underestimated the final steep track descent through the woods and
performed a spectacular somersault that left him with a few unpleasant
bruises and cuts. The river looked extremely tempting on this hot
midsummer evening. More than half the group went in, although the
numerous midges ensured that our stay was brief. While the swimmers
were drying off, Louis managed to entangle the Aerobie ring on the highest
branches of a nearby tree - fortunately he was an acrobatic little monkey
and managed to retrieve the ring in no time.
Michael was certainly pushing the younger riders by taking the Buckland
return route: carrots and sticks were required on the steep woodland climb
to achieve acceptable performance. Once on the descent to Ashburton,
however, there were plenty of happy sounds - except for the one made by Will
as he accidentally steered himself into the nettles; and then the one
made by Ben as he crashed into Will! All part of the fun I suppose! |
| Sunday 15 Jun |
Day ride:
Gidleigh Bridge (6m) |
1015-1130 |
| 1 Present:
Michael J |
Weather: Hot &
sunny |
| With all the other fast riders otherwise occupied Michael
(who hates solo riding) made the best he could of the superb weather with a
short ride to Gidleigh bridge. All Sunday rides will be half-day
morning rides from next week, to encourage our many younger riders. |
| Friday 13 June |
Evening ride: Chalk Ford (10m) |
1900-2130 |
| 6 Present: Jake C (15),
Michael J, Jamie M (15), Gavin P, Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Overcast & warm with some
spots of rain |
| A hot and sunny day had given way to an overcast evening
with the threat of thunder showers, but we were determined to visit a
moorland river again. We climbed Wallaford Road as quickly as Keir's
little legs would carry him (which was actually quicker than usual for
him!), bringing us eventually to the track past Hayford Hall to Lud Gate.
The subsequent descent across open moorland was interrupted only by the
observation of a dead sheep, which seemed to fascinate the younger riders.
There was time for Joe and Keir to get their feet wet in the river, but a
few heavy raindrops prompted us to head homewards without further delay.
In fact it turned largely dry again, and our return past Hawson Court was
augmented with the fabulous smells of damp grassland wafting over the
hedgerows. |
| Sunday 8 Jun |
Day ride:
Haytor (20m) |
1015-1400 |
| 4 Present: Louis
B (11), Tao B, Will B (13), Michael J |
Weather: Sunny
with showers |
| Warm sunshine accompanied our ride from Bickington to Hayor
as Louis and Will demonstrated that they possess every bit of their
brother's cycling prowess. A very dark cloud gathered on the final
climb to the rock, unleashing an unseasonal hailstorm just as we reached the
summit. The refreshments van provided useful shelter from the bitter
wind in addition to numerous cups of soup and hot chocolate, but when the
sun returned we decided to return home so that the youngsters could defrost
and learn the importance of bringing wet-weather clothing on future cycle
rides! |
| Friday 6 June |
Evening ride: Hembury Woods (8m) |
1900-2130 |
| 8 Present: Tao B, Jake C (15),
Josh H (10), Michael J, Jamie M (15), Gavin P, Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Spells of light drizzle,
turning to rain |
| Keir, whose own bike was way too small for him, tried
Michael's spare bike this week, but a few more swaps were required on the
ride before he and Jamie found just the right bikes. Hembury Woods was
an ideal destination in such uncertain weather conditions. After what
seemed like miles of tracks through glades and woodland, and some riverside
fun involving a rope swing, we finally emerged at Buckfast to find
increasingly heavy rain for the final mile. |
| Sunday 1 Jun |
Day ride:
Morwellham Quay (34m) |
1015-1650 |
| 2 Present: Tao B,
Michael J |
Weather: Sunny
and warm |
| Fortunately we didn't pay too much attention to the poor
weather forecast and set out on a car-assisted journey to Morwellham Quay in
West Devon. We left the car at the Coypool car park in Plympton and
took the excellent Plym Valley cycleway towards Clearbrook. At the
half way point we were surprised to see that tarmac had been laid for around
a mile of the path - certainly very smooth, but it somehow seemed out of
place in this peaceful wooded valley. We explored many new country lanes
through Denham Bridge and arrived at our destination at around 1.15.
The Pasty Restaurant looked an inviting place for lunch, but the serving
hatch was closed and two tourists told us that the proprietor had just
gone. We nipped round the front and caught him trying to escape.
Under interrogation he admitted that he was closing up and that he did know
the time was 1.20. On further questioning about the logic of closing a
pasty restaurant at lunchtime he argued that he had been open since 10am and
hardly anybody had bothered to buy anything! We didn't see this as
particularly surprising, so just asked him if he wanted to serve us.
Grudgingly he returned to his shop and dig out a few pasties for us and
another tourist who had happened along. He charged £2.25 for each
pasty, and before we had chance to discover that they were 50% pastry, he
was gone. We spent the next 20 minutes explaining to five separate
groups of hungry tourists why the proprietor would soon be out of business.
We had seen several people wandering around dressed in period costume,
but we hadn't been wondering whether they got paid for it for more than a
few minutes when we noticed what looked like a little girl from Victorian
England running past with a slightly ungainly gait. The pair of jeans
visible through the rear of the skirt revealed that this was a little boy
who had been enjoying the site's dressing up room. Needless to say,
Tao couldn't be stopped from trying on everything, from bowler hats to a
delightful dress and shawl number!
Eventually we decided that we'd better be heading for home. Because
of the nature of the terrain we retraced most of our outward route to bring
us, for the first time ever, riding down the Plym Valley cycleway.
We really do recommend it! |
| Friday 30 May |
Evening ride: Avon Dam (13m) |
1900-2200 |
| 13 Present: Louie B (11), Tao B, Will B
(13), Ben C (15), Jake C (15), Josh H (10), Dave H, Michael J, Sean N (15),
Gavin P, Giles Q, Daniel S (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Hot and sunny |
| This was a perfect summer's evening, and several youngsters
had come out with swimming gear in the hope of a ride to the Avon Dam.
They were not disappointed! The long climb past Nurston was tough
payment for our new riders, but the rewards came with a fun half hour
dipping into the deep rocky pools of the Avon river and enjoying slippery
green rock-slides. Some went in fully clothed, but tonight it was so
warm that it really didn't matter. With the threat of dusk pressing ever
nearer we pushed on to the reservoir itself. Here we discovered an
oasis of beauty bathed in a magical peace, a feint summer haze blurring the
distant hills. It really was a perfect moment, and we all savoured it
in our own individual ways. The final pleasures of this adventurous
ride came after we had picked our way along the edge of the reservoir and
climbed the final hill along the Abbot's Way. The downhill ride across
the moor was action-packed in the fast-disappearing light, leaving happy
memories to enrich our midnight dreams. |
| Sunday 25 May |
Day ride:
Fingle Bridge (46m) |
1015-1635 |
| 3 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Dry,
turning sunny by afternoon |
| We took the fast route to Chudleigh and then the scenic
Teign Valley road to Steps Bridge. Woodland tracks quickly brought us
to a lunch spot by the river Teign from where Gavin had to return home by
the same route in order to get back for a 3pm meeting. The track continued
through immense glades of bluebells that carpeted the whole woodland floor
and then brought us quickly to a short section of tarmac. It wasn't
long before we were back on the tracks again, following the river on the
south bank for what seemed like miles of often rocky terrain - Tao really
wished for his off-road tyres. Fingle Bridge was busy with tourists so
we pressed on to the path that took us high up the side of the valley, where
extensive woodlands could be seen for miles and Castle Drogo dominated the
distant horizon. The twisty track descent over the next few miles was
as much fun as it always was, but all good things have to end some time.
Chagford offered hospitality in the form of the refurbished Old Forge Tea
Rooms. The food was reasonable, but £2.25 for a very medium-sized hot
chocolate was even more expensive than the Primrose at Lustleigh! The
policy for all Dartmoor cafes seems to be to charge the highest price that
the market will stand. The proprietor kept us entertained by watering
his hanging baskets with a very small watering can, having to climb his
steps three times for every pot!
With the sun coming out we sped home past Hound Tor with a tailwind that
made us all feel on top of the world. Oliver, who had failed to get up
in time for the start of the ride, came down to meet us to finalise our
plans for the summer tour. Now it seems we are going to Norway on 4
July, so Michael had better get the bookings sorted out in double quick
time. |
| Friday 23 May |
Evening ride: Venford Reservoir (12m) |
1900-2145 |
| 5 Present: Josh H (10), Michael J,
Oliver L, Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Dry |
| Venford Reservoir was our proposed target tonight, but the
cheap chain that Oliver had purchased from the Cycle show in Birmingham
threatened to derail our plans. First, a damaged link near Hawson
Court had to be removed. Then the chain broke completely (in a
different place) on the climb the the reservoir. The rest of us
continued to the top while Oliver repaired it, but it broke yet again near
the cattle grid! Poor Oliver. He didn't quite make it to the
destination, but the rest of us did. Keir put in a much improved
performance this evening, managing to climb some of the steepest hills at a
very respectable pace. Part of the problem seemed to be his small bike
that could not be adjusted high enough. When he swapped bikes with Joe
he went even faster, much to his personal satisfaction. |
| Sunday 18 May |
Day ride:
Avon Railway (28m) |
1015-1635 |
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather:
Occasional showers |
| When a particularly nasty shower forced us to head for a bus
shelter just half a mile from the start of the ride it seemed like the ride
would be going nowhere today. It eased off after ten minutes so we
tentatively proceeded towards South Brent, still expecting to be taking tea
at the cafe and then skirting back to Buckfastleigh. On arrival,
however, the cafe had shut down - probably something to do with the new
owners' obvious focus on lunches - and the weather was looking quite bright.
After a series of decisions at various junctions we were soon near
Loddiswell riding down a thrilling track descent between two hedgerows.
Tao skidded, Gavin came off and everyone got stung at least once by the
profusion of nettles that poked through the garlic. At the bottom we
found ourselves in a different world: a wooded glade beside the tranquil
river Avon. A pair of Canada geese and their gosling gently glided
away from the bank as we approached. This was surely the world's most
perfect lunch spot, the tall trees providing perfect shelter from the
showers with their multiple overlapping leaf layers. There were fish
of course, and plenty of intriguing paths to keep Joe entertained when he
had completed his sausage roll.
Nearby was an ancient railway bridge, now almost invisible with its
lichens and grassy outgrowths. This was the course of the South Brent
to Kingsbridge railway many years ago, but now it made an excellent cycling
route. It was gravel for the most part, but Joe found one muddy area
and made the mistake of trying to ride through it. He didn't make it
and ended up putting both feet in the thick mud, but his problems then got
worse when he tried to walk forwards: his shoe stayed and his socked foot
was unavoidably planted firmly in the mud! Poor Joe!
We eventually emerged from the wilderness near Topsham Bridge and
proceeded with good speed through Moreleigh to Diptford, Rattery and home. |
| Friday 16 May |
Evening ride: Holne (8m) |
1900-2100 |
| 6 Present: Tao B, Will B (13), Michael J,
Philip O, Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny; cold by dusk |
| Gavin was late, so his ride started with a mad dash over
Cross Furzes to Michelcombe, where he finally caught us. Will then
treated us to a demonstration of his acrobatic prowess in the park, with a
professionally-executed back-flip across the damp grass. It was just a
few minutes later that Philip then made the mistake of noticing an escaped
chicken near the slide. Tao and Will's attempts to catch the errant
bird provided entertainment on a par with the film Chicken Run, but when she
took cover in a bramble hedge and the owners came along needing our
assistance, there was no choice but to surround the bird on all sides and
mount an assault through the hedge. After many scratches she was
eventually retrieved from deep inside the hedge, and seemed quite pleased to
be reunited with her keepers! Surely that was enough excitement for one
evening? Well, no actually. Will managed to take a corner too fast and
grounded himself and the bike, breaking the mountings for the new front
light that his brother had just bought him that afternoon. To make
matters worse, it wasn't even dark yet so the light had never actually been
used! Poor Tao!
Barbecue smells abounded from the camping areas of the Park. Our
return route from Ashburton brought us past the scene of a car accident.
The police were taking photographs and allowed us to pass, but it wasn't
until later that we discovered that two Buckfastleigh lads had been
seriously injured. |
| Sunday 11 May |
Day ride:
Lustleigh Cleave (33m) |
1015-1330 |
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny
with showers later |
| Having ridden the 10 miles to Bovey Tracey we took the
course of the old railway line to Lustleigh, keeping Joe entertained along
the way by getting him to identify all the dogs he saw. Amazingly, all
the people we saw except one had at least one dog with them! Many years
ago we visited the extremely expensive Primrose cafe regularly for the very
best in refreshments, mainly because the then owner gave us a generous 20%
discount . When he sold up, the new owners kept the prices high and
refused point blank to give us any discount at all, so we didn't go again.
Today we called in to see if there had been any further changes. There
were new owners, and the cafe was a little smaller as a result of some poor
seasons, but the prices were still high, and the size of the hot chocolate
was ridiculously small for £1.80. She listened to our request
for future discounts but offered only to think about it and get in touch
with us.
The long climb up through the Cleave was punctuated by some of the
steepest hills in Devon, so we were grateful for the track descent to the
ford near North Bovey and a few minutes of relaxation by the water's edge.
The rotting seat near Yarde farm had been refurbished since our last visit,
but we didn't really have time to enjoy it today as we planned to take the
track route over the hill - a short-cut of sorts, but definitely more
demanding for our younger members.
The first shower of the day began as we were enjoying refreshments
at Hound Tor, and kept going for a full half hour as we traversed the bleak
moor on our journey back to Ashburton and Buckfastleigh. |
| Friday 9 May |
Evening ride: South Brent (11m) |
1900-2100 |
| 6 Present: Josh H (10), Michael J,
Philip O, Gavin P, Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny; cold by dusk |
| Keir was slower than usual on the climb from Dean Prior - he
said he'd been doing gymnastics all day at school! The rough track
from behind Marley Head provided an enjoyable route into the back lanes of
South Brent, but as progress remained slow we decided to return directly via
Rattery rather than detouring through Avonwick as originally intended.
When Joe had finished chasing Keir with a stinging nettle we negotiated the
final descent from Pennywell Farm in an increasingly chilly night air. |
| Sunday 4 May |
Morning ride:
Avon Dam (9m) |
1015-1330 |
| 2 Present:
Michael J, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny
with a gentle breeze |
| With plenty of time to spare we enjoyed the gentle climbs to
Shipley Bridge and the delightfully scenic riverside path to the Avon Dam
before settling down on the grassy bank overlooking the reservoir for a long
and care-free chat about the world. The skylarks and distant ramblers
kept us amused for more than half an hour. There was time to stop
again at the top of the Abbots Way to enjoy the panoramic views from
Widecombe to Paignton - and the busy antics of more Skylarks, eager to
divert our attention from their grassy nests. The rapid descent to
Cross Furzes made a fabulous finish to yet another excellent ride. |
| Friday 2 May |
Evening ride: Landscove (11m) |
1900-2100 |
| 7 Present: Tao B, Ben C (15), Jake C
(15), Josh H (10), Michael J, Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| Some unpleasant showers just before the start of the ride
quickly gave way to a perfect sunny evening for our ride to Landscove.
Jake still didn't have his new mountain bike, but was eagerly anticipating
its arrival within days. After traversing Colston Road to Staverton we
detoured home via the narrow track near Landscove, the sun setting with a
golden glow over the distant hills. Ben's knees were causing him some
pain on the final climbs - we hope he recovers for next week's ride. |
| Sunday 27 April |
Day ride:
Paignton Sands (30m) |
1015-1520 |
| 2 Present:
Michael J, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny
spells with showers later |
| Dismal forecasts proved inaccurate as we headed out through
the Staverton lanes to Ipplepen on this sunny morning. As we enjoyed
refreshments at Fermoys cafe Joe looked at the map and thought he would like
to continue to Paignton. We took the lanes through Compton and then
enjoyed spectacular views across the bay on the descent to Preston. The
beach was busy with wind surfers, dogs and seagulls as we enjoyed our lunch
on the sand, sheltered from the chill breeze by one of the beach huts.
We could have stayed longer of course, but we half respected the forecast of
heavy rain by late afternoon and so set off for Collaton St Mary with all
due speed.
Joe showed outstanding tenacity as he pushed himself up the first climbs
towards Redpost, and soon he was setting a good pace back to Staverton.
Two steam trains passing each other at the station were a sure sign of brisk
business on the Primrose line on this last Sunday of the holiday week.
Whilst the forecast rain did not materialise until later, a particularly
nasty shower did its best to dampen our spirits on the final two miles home. |
| Friday 25 April |
Evening ride: Ashburn River Track (11m) |
1900-2125 |
| 9 Present: Tao B, Ben C (14), Jake C
(14), Josh H (10), Michael J, Jamie M (14), Gavin P, Keir P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| Morning rain had given way to a warm and pleasant evening,
ideal for an excursion through the lanes near Ashburton. Everyone
thoroughly enjoyed the riverside track from Brownshill Farms along the
Ashburn, including young Keir who found himself riding away from a horse
that seemed intent on licking the back of his neck! The climb to Druid
farm quickly brought us to Holne Bridge and River Dart Country Park, where
Tao, Ben and a few others were nearly caught out by an unexpected barrier
across the road as the turned a corner. The riverside track through
Hembury provided plenty of amusement in the semi-darkness, as did Ben with
his laser penlight. |
| Sunday 20 April |
Day ride:
Blackpool Sands (45m) |
1015-1720 |
| 4 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Oliver L, Gavin P |
Weather: Sunny
spells with chilly wind |
| We set off a little late for Totnes on this cold grey
morning, mainly owing to Oliver's late appearance at the start. After
negotiating the many Easter Day pedestrians on the riverside track we paused
briefly to buy lunch and then pressed on with good speed to Harbertonford.
The main road to Halwell would have been a little faster, but the constant
stream of holiday traffic quickly persuaded us to take the scenic lane route
via Moreleigh. Tao, who had first suggested Blackpool Sands to his rather
sceptical comrades, began to feel vindicated as the predicted sunny periods
began to break out on the descent to Strete. Lunch on the beach was
certainly bracing, the stiff breeze proved more than a challenge for the
youngsters trying to fly their kite. but the bright sunshine and lofty waves
made the whole experience highly enjoyable. Further entertainment was
provided by the beach's regular lunchtime swimmer, making his appearance at
12.30 exactly as he has done for more than 15 years.
It wasn't the weather to be hanging around for long, but half way up the
hill towards Stoke Flemming we noticed a pair of benches situated in a
sheltered position overlooking the bay. We just had to sit there for a
while and contemplate how much warmer the spot would have been for lunch.
The back lanes and tracks through Little Dartmouth offered the usual
spectacular views of the coast and an exhilarating descent to the
picturesque town. While searching the many cafes for one that was not
overflowing with tourists we bumped into Michael's cousins, down from
Bristol for the weekend. We managed to find a table and chairs outside
the Station restaurant overlooking the river, bustling with boats and
activity of all kinds.
We took the Higher Ferry to Kingswear for 50p each, but Tao, who is never
happy on boats, was feeling none too comfortable as he gazed down at the
frothing water. We did get an excellent view of Thomas the Tank
Engine, pulling its carriages to and fro along the track.
From Hillhead we called in briefly at Sainsburys for drinks and the
proceeded up Kings Ash hill to Marldon and the lanes to Staverton.
This has been our first full-length ride since September, so we all felt
very satisfied as we arrived home, tired but full of the joys of spring. |
| Friday 18 April |
Evening ride: Skerraton Down (8m) |
1900-2115 |
| 7 Present: Tao B, Josh H (10), Michael
J, Oliver L, Gavin P, John S, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny and warm |
| John Stuart, one of our founding members, made a surprise
come-back this evening on his old Saracen mountain bike, dusted off
especially for the occasion. Our route took us to Dean Prior and up
the long climb past Nurston Farm, but we hadn't gone far before Michael got
another in his long series of punctures: unable to penetrate his new
puncture-proof front tyre, the thorn (which had no business being on a
village street in any case) chose the rear tyre! New youngster Josh
performed well on the climb, and we were soon on the open moor enjoying the
last of the sunset and a few aerobie throws. Four delightful miniature
ponies raced us on the descent to Cross Furzes, clearly demonstrating their
evolutionary desire for speed. |

| Joe had not chosen the best of mornings to invite his young
friend Keir to join the club. We set off towards Buckfast with light
drizzle in the air, planning to be home by lunchtime in view of the poor
forecast. A right turn took us through the sheltered Birchetts Wood
track, which for once was almost bone dry. After tackling the steep
hill to Holne a Galaxy bar proved highly effective in recharging Keir's
biological batteries, and soon we were off again to Gallant Le Bower and the
descent through Hembury Woods that offered plenty of fun for everyone. |

| Appearances can be deceptive! The evening sunshine
looked so inviting that Ben considered venturing out in T-shirt and shorts.
By the end of the ride, however, most of us were so cold that home seemed
far more attractive than a final detour. Our ride had taken us to
Ashburton, up Chuley hill, down one of our favourite tracks and home via
Landscove. |

Day ride:
Tuckenhay (27m) |
1015-1645 |
| 5 Present: Tao B,
Michael J, Oliver L, Ben P (12), Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny & warm |
| This was our first full-day ride since September, and the
first ever full-day ride for our two youngsters, Ben and Joe. We
started out with Colston Road and the cyclepath from Dartington to Totnes,
stopping briefly at Safeways for the benefit of those who had forgotten (or
got up too late) to bring a packed lunch. We checked out the Hot
Pursuit cycle shop in Fore Street and were able to verify that it is indeed
closing down and that there are indeed some useful price reductions on a
number of items. Our plan was to take the scenic Sharpham Drive path to
Ashprington - difficult on the sections designated as footpath only, but
infinitely more fun than the long climb up Totnes Downhill! As we
arrived at the entrance we noticed, with much excitement, a new cycle path
sign a little way down the hill. The route quickly rejoined our
familiar path and took us along many newly-laid cycle paths that made the
whole experience highly enjoyable. The final two styles and steep
climb had been circumvented by a new cycle path that skirted around the edge
of the field and offered excellent views of the river Dart. We'll
certainly be including this path again on future rides.
Looking for a riverside lunch spot on the descent from Ashprington we
noticed a footpath on the left that we had never previously explored.
The owner of the nearby house confirmed that the path led to the river, and
even offered us exclusive use of her private garden and picnic table
overlooking the stepping stones! It really was a perfect spot for
lunch. Ben provided us with entertainment by struggling for a full 5
minutes to carry his bike across the stepping stones to the far bank of the
creek.
The return route was always going to be tiring for Ben and Joe, but they
coped admirably with Corkscrew hill and the subsequent climbs. Whilst
they were close to breaking point after the final climb to Moreleigh, the
flatter lanes to Diptford gave them new life. They both made it home,
tired but very satisfied at their 27-mile achievement. |

Evening ride: Staverton (10m) |
1900-2115 |
| 5 Present: Julian D, Michael J, Oliver

Weather: Sunny & warm |
| New and (in some cases) expensive lighting systems abounded
for our first evening ride of the summer season, so we were all eager for
the sun to sink over the western horizon. The rich red sunset
gradually gave way to darkness and the wonderful smells of the sleeping
countryside. Our lights aided us easily through the quiet village of
Landscove, and on the final climb to Green Lane we were all looking forward
to a long season of exciting evening rides. |

Morning ride: Spitchwick (10m) |
1015-1325 |
| 5 Present: Michael J, Oliver L, Ben P
(12), Gavin P, Joe V (12) |
Weather: Sunny & warm |
| Our turnout today was surprisingly good considering the twin
adversaries of Mother's Day and the introduction of British Summer Time.
The idea of visiting Spitchwick had been bouncing around for a few days, so
it wasn't long before we were tackling Hembury Hill with a vengence.
Oliver, who had been fixing a late puncture, caught up with us just in time
to spot a pair of deer in the woods not far from the road. New protective
fences had been erected around certain areas of Spitchwick Common to prevent
erosion, but all the best bits were fence-free making it ideal for our usual
frisbee contests. We were all a bit sleepy today and could easily have
settled down on the grass for hours, but the desire for lunch encouraged us
to rouse ourselves for the long climb back to Gallant-Le-Bower. Ben
really excelled himself today by putting in some real effort on the climbs,
and Joe did the best he could with his BMX.
Oliver's worst nightmares turned real on the lower Hembury track when he
got yet another puncture. He fixed it with all due speed while we
gazed lazily from the grass verges, a bee adding to the distant babble
of the brook, but when he had finished he discovered another puncture that
needed his attention. Eventually we set off once more to enjoy the
final descent through the woods to Buckfast and home. |

1015-1355 |
| 7 Present: Tao B, Michael J, Oliver L,

Weather: Sunny & warm, cold breeze |
| A perfect spring morning offered ideal weather conditions
for our first 2003 excursion to the Avon Dam. Joe did not relish the
prospect of climbing all those hills on his BMX, so Tao took him back to
Michael's to collect a mountain bike on the way to Dean Prior. Soon we
were off again, but Michael's blowout necessitated another bike swap before
we had finished the climb past Nurston. The hills seemed never ending to
the new youngsters, so Michael helped Joe and Tommy to pace themselves and
select appropriate gears: soon they were climbing long hills without
stopping, and feeling very pleased with their new-found skills.
The car park at Shipley Bridge was full to overflowing, so our progress
up the picturesque riverside path to the dam was a little slower than usual.
It wasn't long before the huge wall of the dam came into view: Ben, who had
never seen it, was quite stunned by its enormity. We weren't exactly
early after the morning's delays, but we made time to lay on the grass
overlooking the water, to chat and eat refreshments in the noonday sun.
The final part of our route, across the open moor behind the reservoir,
was new to nearly all the youngsters. Ben made a long detour to avoid
crossing the path of a moorland cow, only to watch it scuttle away as soon
as Michael approached it. The promised panoramic views from the top of
the hill did not materialise, being obscured by a thick haze, but the
downhill to Cross Furzes proved every bit as exciting as Michael had
predicted. Tommy managed to fly over his handlebars on the final
descent, but he reckoned that was the best part of the ride! |

Weather: Sunny, slight breeze |
| Perfect weather left us plenty of options today, but with
another two new youngsters joining the ride we decided to take the
relatively flat route along Colston Road to Staverton. We arrived just
as the steam train was ready to leave the station for Totnes, and the gang
just couldn't resist racing the train along the riverside path while the
many tourists waved happily at us. After much stone-skimming (and stone
splashing) we set off once more, this time for Landscove. Mother
Hubbard's Cafe was very tempting, but we were keen to reach an exciting
downhill track so we pressed on up the final climbs. When we finally
arrived, the track was being used as part of the Rainbow Ride route - a
charity ride for horse enthusiasts - but they were in no hurry, so we
overtook them and set off to enjoy the rough descent across the fields and
through the woodland. Everyone enjoyed the ride so much that they
wanted to do it again next week! A short but steep climb from Lower Combe
brought us to Higher Beara farm, from where Green Lane brought us swiftly
back to Buckfastleigh and an afternoon of computer games.
Congratulations to Jake on achieving his Stage 1 certificate today. |

Weather: Windy, cloudy and cold |
| Another new youngster, Ben Wyeth, joined us for the climb
through Buckfast to Scorriton and Michelcombe. His gearless BMX bike
was a little hard for climbing the hills, but he managed very well and was
soon joining the others rolling tyres in Holne park. The off-road was the
bit Daniel had been waiting for, and he wasn't at all disappointed with the
long winding woodland track leading down to River Dart Country Park.
There was a little mud at the end, but that just made it even more fun from
Daniel's point of view. The ride finished with the riverside track
from the park back to Hembury Woods, along which Jamie had to take out his
car foot-pump three times to reinflate his tyre. After the ride we
discovered that the puncture was caused by another enormous thorn from the
26 January ride - which increases the puncture count for that ride to seven! |

Weather: Sunny and warm |
| This was Daniel's first ride with us since last summer, but
he was bubbling over with energy so we decided to aim for Fermoys restaurant
just in case it proved an achievable target. Ben, who was now working
towards his Stage 2 certificate, also had an eye on ticking off his 20-mile
ride stage point. Both boys rode well up the intimidating Caddaford
Hill, through Staverton and on to Broadhempston. It was decision time,
but the prospect of excellent cakes and drinks simply proved irresistable.
After another hill that got both Daniel and Ben calling Michael names, we
arrived at Fermoys by 11.45 and settled down in the sun-flooded garden to
enjoy scones and freshly-squeezed orange juice.
Suitably refreshed we set off for the daunting return journey via
Woodland and Ashburton, with both lads beginning to feel the pain. A
few chocolate bars were required to coax them the last few miles, but they
finally made it home by 2.30 having just achieved the target of 20 miles.
This was not a ride that Daniel will forget. |

McLeod has hidden away in his cliffside retreat. Meanwhile the locals

Twelve-year-old Chuck Norstadt is also an outsider. Alienated from his

he has to pass his entrance exam first. Then by accident, Chuck meets
Justin McLeod. Instead of a horrible freak, Justin turns out to be the

which enables them both to face the world that has for so long rejected

| Ben was pleasantly surprised by the significant lack of
hills on this morning's excursion to the lanes behind Ashburton. He
won 10 bonus points (!) for spotting the narrow mill house by the side of
the lane, so he now only has to earn another 2190 points to get a free
chocolate muffin! We made good speed along the occasionally-muddy woodland
track that runs alongside the river, then headed for Ashburton for a cafe
stop. Unfortunately all the cafes in town were closed, so after
bumping into Julian on Western Road we rode back to the Grange cafe at
Buckfast to carry out an experiment on the relative sizes of their large and
small mugs. The result: the contents of a large mug will just fit into
a small mug! |

A brisk climb was essential this morning to get us warmed up, so we climbed
Dean Hill and skirted around Harbourneford before enjoying the descent
to South Brent. The cafe looked inviting, but we needed to keep moving
in order to make it home by 1pm.
Descending to Avonwick we enjoyed the cobbled track that runs alongside
the river Avon. Several of the youngsters were suffering a bit from
the cold, so the main road served as a useful shortcut to Rattery.
Here, a poultry show offered some comical entertainment before we tackled
the final climb to Pennywell and home. |

up Wallaford Road for the prospect of a moorland ride to Chalk Ford.
Ben worked hard for more than half an hour to get there, spurred on by the
thought of off-road downhilling to a moorland stream. On reaching the
top, however, Oliver decided that (as Michael had said from the outset) the
moor would be too wet for cycling! We made the best of the situation by
enjoying the downhill to Coombe and then returning home for 12.30. |

expensive than last week's, with an excellent range of home-baked cakes.
We took the road route around the track that caused all the punctures last
week, thereby avoiding any delays at all. We detoured home through
Broadhempston rather than Staverton. And, because there were no
punctures, we got hom by just after 1pm. All in all this was an

| Three new youngsters helped make this the largest attendance
of the year so far. We wanted to include a cafe in the ride today, to
help everyone towards completion of their Stage 1 certificate, so we headed
off along Colston road. The cycle track from Dartington to Totnes
along the riverside was a new and highly enjoyable experience for many of
the youngsters, taking us past the weir and a number of swans, and through
the wood where trees have sprouted right in the middle of the path. The
Terrace Cafe decided to put us on tables outside, where the general verdict
on the food and drink quality was highly favourable. The journey home
was to be via Littlehempston, but problems began at the top of the steep
stony track: the local farmer had been busy, leaving all the hedge trimmings
across the path. Of course the youngsters didn't notice, so when we
reached the bridge at the bottom we had no fewer than 6 punctures to repair!
The main victims were Ben and James. A seventh, caused by Angus riding
over a drawing pin, seemed to stay up as long as we didn't remove the pin!
And of course there was also Jamie's derailleur to reassemble.
An hour later we finally set off for a very late return home.
Everyone did remarkably well, especially in view of the fact that it was
nearly 3pm when we got home. Michael's supply of chocolate rations
kept everyone going, so in the end there were a lot of points added to the
Training Programme scoresheet, which probably made it all worthwhile. |

mud around, but that didn't bother Matthew as he splashed his way through
puddles and streams. We had hoped to stop briefly at Holne park, but today
it was actually being used by some local children. We proceeded along
the ridge to Hembury Fort and got a little frisbee practice in before the
first shower persuaded us to move on. The final descent of the Slalom

and the prospect of a grand snowball fight in the park proved irresistible.
All that running around got us more out of breath than the climb! When
James had finished his lesson about the low friction between icy roads and
bicycle tyres we continued past Gallant Le Bower in brilliant sunshine to
the top of Hembury. There was more fun for James on the track descent
past the fort as he decided to ride into a tree - clearly he wanted to have

plenty of frost-adorned scenery to admire along the river Avon from Avonwick

the second half of the ride. Approaching a notorious corner on a back
lane near Blue Post we encountered a huge sheet of ice stretching from one
hedge to the other. Near the bottom was a Volvo that had lost all grip
and turned 90 degrees to completely block the lane. A tractor soon
solved the problem for the driver, but ours continued as we negotiated a
river of ice that stretched all the way down the hill from Pennywell Farm to
Dean Prior. It certainly was an eventful ride! |
