Wednesday 28 December Morning Ride: Christmas Special 1015-1300
5 Present: Kane Edwards (13), Dennis Ham (11), Josh Ham (13), Michael Jones, Joe Venables (15) Weather: Sunny but very cold
On a freezing cold morning when gloves were essential to stay alive, Kane turned up with no gloves and had to share with Dennis!  The lower Hembury track was frozen solid today and the youngsters took pleasure in riding through the ice-topped puddles.

Everyone got a free Christmas chocolate bar as we sat on the swings and forts in Holne playpark admiring the views and watching beams of sunlight melting the frosty grass.  Suddenly it seemed to get even colder, and a swift ride along the ridge road to Hembury fort didn't make us any warmer at all!  Plans for a meander around the many tracks that criss-cross the wood were replaced with a speedy descent down the Slalom track and a dash for the almost tropical warmth of the Crofters clubroom.

The afternoon social included a showing of the Christmas edition of Doctor Who and a grand Lord of the Rings computer game challenge between Joe and Michael on the one side and Kane and Josh on the other.  No prizes for guessing the winnders!

Friday 23 December Cinema trip: King Kong 1700-2200
7 Present: Kane Edwards (13), Dennis Ham (11), Josh Ham (13), Osian Jarvis (11), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Joe Venables (15)
Everybody wanted a cinema trip tonight, and King Kong seemed to be the film of the moment.  With the film running for more than three hours we needed to start the social at 5pm instead of 7, so we had a packed evening of top quality entertainment.  As for the film - well, it boasted a very convincing monkey and was packed full of action sequences, but it couldn't help being based on a story that's a bit out of date.  None of the youngsters liked the ending, but everyone enjoyed their evening out.

Sunday 18 December Day Ride: Christmas Lunch 1015-1700
5 Present: Osian Jarvis (11), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (15), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Sunny but cold
Osian was slower than usual on his first day ride, so our outward ride through Ashburton and Bickington was somewhat delayed.  He picked up on the climb to Ilsington however, and we arrived at the hotel by 12.20, leaving us plenty of time to enjoy the pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room before settling down for our three-course meal.  Gavin lost some pool time because he had to fix a puncture!

The meal itself was generally good, as this year everyone could choose from a full lunchtime menu.  Keir, of course, was the most difficult to please, so the staff had to offer him chicken instead of turkey!  Afterwards there was coffee and mints in front of the huge open fire, during which time Joe learned that he had just beaten Keir to the 2004/2005 attendance trophy.

The ride home was mainly downhill and, consequently, chilly, but Osian had found new energy after his meal so we made it back to Buckfastleigh before dark.

5 Present: Kane Edwards (13), Osian Jarvis (11), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14)
With the first snowfall of the season lying everywhere, some members were very pleased to have the opportunity to drive up to Venford to play in the snow.  Computer games made up the rest of the evening's entertainment.

Sunday 6 November Morning Ride: 1015-1345
2 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Mainly wet
The bad weather this morning persuaded us to arrange a social in place of the advertised ride.

Friday 4 November Crofters Social 1900-2200
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14)
An evening of computer games was arranged by popular demand.

Sunday 30 October Morning Ride: Totnes (16m) 1015-1345
5 Present: Kane Edwards (13), Josh Ham (13), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry with sunny spells
Heavy overnight rain gave way to a blustery but dry morning just in time for the start of our ride.  We rode along Colston Road and on to the Cider Press Centre at Dartington where we settled into Cranks vegetarian restaurant for a range of scones and fruit juice concoctions.  The riverside cyclepath gave us excellent views of the swollen river Dart, culminating in the weir which had been transformed into a raging torrent.

Kane was beginning to struggle as we climbed the hill towards Rattery, but he splashed bravely onwards through the lakes that straddled the lanes, bringing us home by 1.45 for an afternoon social at Crofters.

Friday 28 October Crofters Social 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14)
Keir was delayed by the A38 roadworks so our planned badminton game was replaced with a games social at Crofters.

Sunday 23 October Morning Ride: River Dart Country Park (13m) 1015-1300
6 Present: Donald Comer-Calder (8), Nick Comer-Calder, Josh Ham (13), Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14), Megan Venables (10) Weather: Mainly dry
This morning's ride took us along the old Ashburton road, then through Ashburton and Rew to the woodland track that follows the river Ashburn back towards Ashburton.  The main path provided plenty of fun for everyone, but when we took up Joes's suggestion of crossing the lane and continuing along the field, Nick was not quite so amused: thick mud hampered our progress over the style half-way along and clogged everyone's brakes by the time we reached the road!

To finish the ride on a dryer note we rode through River Dart Adventures and on through Holne Woods, following the woodland path up towards Gallant Le Bower.  From there the Slalom track through Hembury proved irresitable.  Nick and Donald were both impressed with the track, although Nick's stated aim of staying close behind his son proved difficult to make a reality!

Friday 21 October Crofters Social 1900-2200
2 Present: Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14)
An evening of frantic computer gaming kept us very well entertained.

Sunday 16 October Morning Ride: Staverton (12m) 1015-1300
6 Present: Donald Comer-Calder (8), Kane Edwards (13), Osian Jarvis (12), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: dry start, rain later
The forecast was for rain but as we set out from the start the sky was just cloudy.  We nearly got to Dartington before the rain set in, but when the youngsters were given a choice about heading back or going on to complete the loop, everyone wanted to go on!

There were short breaks in the rain, but it was tipping down for the return journey through the lanes from Staverton and some of the youngsters may have been wondering why they voted to go on!  Everyone did well, including new rider Osian, and the afternoon social at Crofters helped to make up for what had turned out to be a very wet morning of cycling.

Friday 14 October Crofters Social 1900-2200
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14)
Several multi-player network games provided the entertainment for this evening's social.

Sunday 9 October Morning Ride: Holne (13m) 1015-1245
5 Present: Donald Comer-Calder (8), Nick Comer-Calder, Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
Nick and Donald had to be home by 1pm so we planned a shortish ride that took us along the lower Hembury track and up to Holne playpark, where the inevitable frisbee contests were held in the long, wet grass.  For the return route we headed down the track to River Dart Adventures - an exciting experience for our youngest member Donald who showed just how strong a rider he is.

Friday 7 October Annual General Meeting 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Ben Parker (14), Keir Purdie (13), Joe Venables (14)
Several important decisions were taken at this year's AGM.  Michael continues as Section Secretary, with Joe elected as Section Delegate.  Keir will be Publicity Officer and will be targeting cycle shops, local poster locations and local newspapers with as much publicity material as he can manage.  Additionally Keir will be working with all regular Section members to recruit by word of mouth, and both Joe and Keir will be in charge of making new members welcome on rides.  There will be a Christmas Lunch ride this year that will be open to all members past and present.  The social programme will be based at Crofters but will include trips out for cinema, bowling, badminton or swimming from time to time, usually arranged a week beforehand - check the online activities list a few days before each social to see whether a special event is planned.  There will be a junior introductory tour over the Easter bank holiday weekend in 2006 to the Somerset Levels and the Quantocks, which we hope will appeal to many of our riders, and hopefully a longer tour to Scotland over the summer holidays averaging 35-40mpd.  There will also be youth hostel weekends to Salcombe and Bellever over the summer, and our Ten Tors event with certificates in June or July.  Regular club members will be encouraged to contribute ride reports whenever they would like to do so.

Sunday 2 October Morning Ride: Avon Dam (13m) 1015-1345
6 Present: Donald Comer-Calder (8), Nick Comer-Calder, Henry Gunter (10), Jill Hockmuth, Michael Jones, Ben Parker (14) Weather: Dry with sunny spells
New 8-year-old Donald performed incredibly well on an ambitious first ride to the Avon Dam, ably accompanied by his father.  An unfortunate incident with a farm dog near Nurston did not put him off at all and we were soon pushing our way through the many visitors walking up the path from Shipley Bridge.  We paused briefly by the river so that the youngsters (including Henry who hasn't been out for a few months) could eat a little nourishment, then we pressed on to the dam itself, today almost overflowing after the recent rains.

Once the final climb of the Abbots Way had been completed, everyone enjoyed the spectacular views to the coast and the long descent to Cross Furzes.

Friday 23 September Evening Ride: Holne 1900-2050
5 Present: Michael Jones, George Presland (10), Kevin Presland, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Drizzle
We were joined by Kevin and son George for our final evening ride of the season.  Strangely, the light drizzle seemed to add to the enjoyment this evening, keeping everyone cool along our route through Buckfast to Scoriton and Michelcombe.  Joe was keen to ride the Hembury Woods slalom even through it was totally dark and somewhat muddy: the track certainly proved challenging and provided plenty of fun, although there was a short delay when Michael's light battery jumped off his bike and landed in the undergrowth!

Sunday 25 September Morning Ride: Fermoys (19m) 1015-1345
3 Present: Michael Jones, Ben Parker (14), Gavin Pearson Weather: Warm and sunny
On a bright sunny morning we rode through Caddaford and Staverton to Ipplepen where we called into Fermoys restaurant for an early lunch.  A newly-erected fence cut off our usual short-cut into the car park.  We returned via Broadhempston at a good pace, Ben being very pleased with his performance on his first ride for twelve months.

Friday 23 September Evening Ride: Staverton 1900-2050
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
Our penultimate evening ride started with the climb up Green Lane and the subsequent track down towards Abham.  At Staverton we took the loop along the riverside track and back along the road, then as darkness fell we rode up to Huxham's Cross and down the newly made cycle path to the Steiner school.  The final part of the journey along Colston road was made more eventful by the failure of various front lights, but Joe helped us along with his hand-held torch.

Sunday 18 September Day Ride: 1015-1315
Ride cancelled because of poor attendance.

Friday 16 September Evening Ride: Cross Furzes 1900-2050
4 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Cool but dry
Riding through Buckfast there were conflicting ideas about where we should go, but after some extended debate we decided on the climb to Cross Furzes with a view to riding the track to Chalk Ford.  Michael assured everyone that it would be way too dark for a track by the time we reached the top, so it was not surprising that enthusiasm for the track dwindled with the light.  In the end we took the steep lane descent to Coombe which proved highly entertaining in the darkness.

The cold night air was getting to Keir by the time we reached the bottom, so Michael loaned him his fleece for the final section of the ride home via Hawson Court.

Sunday 11 September Day Ride: 1015-1315
Ride cancelled because of poor attendance.

Friday 9 September Evening Ride 1900-1930
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Rain
Heavy rain meant that this evening's ride was converted to a social at Crofters.

Sunday 4 September Day Ride: 1015-1315
Ride cancelled owing to bad weather.

Friday 2 September Evening Ride: Holne 1900-2050
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
This evening's ride took us up the lower Hembury track to Holne and then home via Hembury Woods.

Sunday 28 August Morning Ride: Avon Dam (13m) 1015-1300
3 Present: Will Burgess (15), Jaden Bush (10), Michael Jones Weather: Warm and sunny
Jaden was pleased with his new bike - surprisingly good considering it came from a skip!  On a perfect summer's morning we rode up Dean Hill to Bloody Pool, bought ice creams at Shipley Bridge and continued on to the Avon Dam at a good pace, pausing only so that Jaden could get his feet wet in the cool waters.  The reservoir was a little lower than usual today but it still made a perfect backdrop for our photos.

As usual the best part of the ride was the descent from Water Oak Corner to Cross Furzes, a new experience for Jaden.

Friday 26 August Evening Ride: Landscove 1900-2100
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, John Stuart, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
John Stuart joined us tonight with some new suspension forkes fitted to his bike and a request to include as much off-road riding as possible.  We rode to Ashburton, up to Chuley Cross and then took the first rough track towards Baddaford.  From the top of Baddaford hill we took the over-field path down to Landscove, and for our final piece of off-road we suggested the often-overgrown path from the centre of Landscove.  When we reached the start the nettles and brambles were meeting to make a narrow tunnel: while the rest of us stopped to consider whether this was a sensible idea, John shot straight through and made surprising progress.  He had to ride back again though because nobody else was prepared to tackle such growth in t-shirts and shorts!  To complete the ride we circled around the offending track and returned to Buckfastleigh via Green Lane.

Sunday 21 August Morning Ride: Plym Valley Cycleway (16m) 1015-1600
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
With only three of us out today we were able to organise a car-assisted ride to add variety to our summer programme.  We drove to Plympton, unpacked the bikes and set off along the Plym Valley cyclepath, a converted railway track that used to run from Plymouth to Princetown.  We met several cyclists along the way of all ages, many admiring the views from the viaducts.  We stopped to explore a few turnoffs here and there, but eventually reached the end of the track near Clearbrook and settled down to enjoy what little lunch we had.

Our plan was to visit Pizza Hut for a late lunch when we got back to the car, but we didn't expect the return journey to take quite so long.  The diversion began when Keir suggested exploring a path that drifted off to the left hand side of the main track near Goodameavy and dropped down to follow the river Meavey.  The track was slightly downhill all the way and offered some of the best and most challenging off-road fun we had experienced for many a day!  Eventually we reached the car park at Dewerstone rock and took the advice of a local by continuing along another track that followed the river Plym.  There was plenty more fun, but the going was harder and without a map we had no idea of how far we would have to go to rejoin the cycle path.  After riding for half an hour we stopped for a quick paddle in an inviting section of river, then headed back to Dewerstone and followed the short section of road that led back to the cyclepath.  Unfortunately Joe went on ahead and missed the turning, and Michael and Keir spent some time trying to find him before heading back along the track towards the car.  Joe had already started the journey home but had stopped just off the side of the cyclepath to fix his bike.  Keir and Michael rode right past him without seeing him, so Joe had to pedal for all he was worth to catch them!

When we finally reached the car we kept to our original plan and enjoyed an excellent meal at Pizza Hut in Plymouth before returning home.

Friday 19 August Evening Ride: Staverton 1900-2100
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Derry Todd (10) Weather: Warm and sunny
With just three of us on the ride this evening we enjoyed a relatively easy ride along Colston Road to Staverton, stopping to play frisbee in the park for a while before heading homewards via Caddaford.

Sunday 14 August Morning Ride: Spitchwick (13m) 1015-1315
3 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
Just for a change we rode to Spitchwick in reverse today, starting with the climb of Auswell Hill at Ashburton, riding through Buckland-in-the-Moor and dropping down the steep hill to Spitchwick.  The homeward route was via Hembury Woods.

Friday 12 August Evening Ride: Skerraton Down (9m) 1900-2100
4 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Derry Todd (10), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
On another warm summer evening we rode the long climb to Skerraton Down, helping Derry on the final climb, and then headed home across the moor to Cross Furzes.

Sunday 7 August Day Ride: Hennock Reservoirs (38m) 1015-1830
3 Present: Sol Kelly (13), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
Keir was unusually asking for a longer ride this morning, and whilst Sol had not been out for several weeks he had never had much difficulty with longer rides.  With this in mind we rode to Bovey Tracey to buy lunch and then headed up the Wrey valley for the steep climb to the reservoirs.  Everything looked perfect today in the summer sunshine and we enjoyed a peaceful lunchtime on the banks of the Tottiford reservoir.

We continued along the rough path that circles the reservoir, then followed the lanes to Moretonhampstead, but by this time Sol was discovering that he was much less fit than he had expected and Keir was slowing down in sympathy!  The route home via North Bovey was consequently rather slow-paced, and by the time we had also stopped for refreshments at Houndtor a late return was guaranteed.  It was well past 7pm when we finally rolled back to Buckfastleigh, but even though we were tired it had been a really enjoyable ride and a good achievement for all concerned.

Friday 5 August Evening Ride: Buckfast 1900-1935
2 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
With a low turnout this evening we decided to do only a short ride to Buckfast.

Sat 23 July- Sun 31 July Tour: South West Ireland (300m)
2 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson Weather: Variable
Our summer tour was another adventurous trip abroad, but this year only supported by two members.  See full report here.

Friday 22 July Evening Ride:
Ride cancelled.

Sunday 17 July Morning Ride: Avon Dam (13m) 1015-1245
3 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones Weather: Warm and sunny
With just Dennis and Josh joining Michael on this sunny summer morning we chose to ride to Shipley Bridge so that the lads could play in the cool waters of the River Avon before continuing past the dam for the fun descent to Cross Furzes.

Friday 15 July Evening Ride: Hembury 1900-2045
2 Present: Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
With just Joe and Michael on the ride this evening we did an energetic ride around Hembury woods.

Sunday 10 July Day Ride: Fingle Bridge (15m) 1015-1700
4 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson Weather: Very hot
This was the hottest Sunday of the year so far, and nobody felt like riding too hard or too far.  We used car assistance to Steps Bridge and then spent the day riding along cool, flat woodland tracks up and down the Teign Valley woodlands.  After lunch at Fingle Bridge we rode the high Hunters Path with its spectacular views across the valley and then returned by the riverside Fishermans path, a new experience for everyone that turned out to be full of exciting twists and turns.  The youngsters didn't much care for the steep flights of steps that we occasionally encountered, but Michael and Gavin were always ready to lend a hand.  By the time we eventually returned to Steps Bridge we all felt that this had been one of the most enjoyable rides of the season.

Friday 8 July Evening Ride: Ashburton 1900-2135
5 Present: Kane Edwards (12), Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
Keir somehow managed to ride Michael's touring bike through Ashburton despite his rather small dimensions!  The path from the school back to Ashburton offered plenty of fun and excellent views in the evening sunshine.  Our return route took us up the hill to Holne Cross, down to Holne Bridge, up the long track through Holne Woods and then down our favourite slalom track through Hembury Woods.

Sunday 3 July Day Ride: Tuckenhay (28m) 1015-1720
7 Present: Louis Burgess (14), Gage Conway (15), Dennis Ham (10), Michael Jones, Steven Major (15), Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
Today's adventurous ride started with the Colston Road route to Dartington and the cycle path to Totnes, where Morrisons provided a good selection of food for lunch.  Next came the fun part of the ride  - the cycle path via Sharpham to Ashprington.  The path has been much improved over the last few years so we made good progress, interrupted only by a short stop at a rope swing.

We couldn't resist testing out the swings and climbing equipment in Ashprington play park, but there was no shade there from the mid-day sun so we continued down the hill to the stepping stones at Tuckenhay and got permission from the owner to have our lunch in a patch of garden beside the river.  The ducks seemed pleased to be fed!

The return route was via Forces Cross, Moreleigh and Diptford, making an energetic ride that pushed Louis, Gage and Dennis to their limits.

Friday 1 July Evening Ride: 1900-2135
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Drizzle and rain
Ride cancelled.

Sunday 26 June Day Ride: Exeter Ship Canal (53m) 1015-1630
2 Present: Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Warm and sunny
With only Joe and Michael out today we decided on a harder ride, taking the Gappah Cross route to Haldon and then descending to the Exeter Ship Canal path that starts at Starcross.  The weather was perfect as we rode along the canal path, with swan and signets adding extra interest.  We detoured past the riverside shops in the centre of Exeter but eventually settled on Pizza Hut as our preferred lunch stop, consuming two drinks refills before the pizza was served!  It's amazing how much more enjoyable a meal can be when it has been really earned!

The long climb from Shillingford St George to Underdown proved the hottest part of the ride, leaving Joe feeling somewhat drained, but we were soon speeding our way home via Chudleigh and feeling very pleased with our efforts.

Friday 24 June Evening Ride: Venford Reservoir 1900-2135
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry and sunny
With everyone feeling on top form we rode to Venford with plenty of time to ride the path that circles the reservoir.  It was a tranquil scene, with duck and ducklings adding to the fun.

Sunday 19 June Day Ride: Bickington (15m) 1015-1400
4 Present: Will Burgess (15), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Very hot and sunny
The oppressive heat did not encourage us as we rode through Ashburton, but we hoped things would be a little cooler on the moor.  On the climb from Bickington, however, Michael lost control and fell off his bike.  Did he have a good excuse?  Closer examination revealed that his right crank and broken clean in half - almost unheard of!  With no backup available on the end of the phone and no way to ride with only one pedal we had little choice but to hobble back to Ashburton where BigPeaks fitted a second hand chainset as a temporary solution.  By now the heat was so oppressive that we decided to abandon ideas of returning to Bickington for the climb, choosing instead to take the short route home and cool off at Crofters.

Friday 17 June Evening Ride: Skerraton Down (9m) 1900-2135
7 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Reuben Johnson (9), Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry and sunny
Reuben did well on his first ride despite having to climb Nurston hill.  Midges were out in force so we didn't wait around too long when we reached the moor.  Keir spent his time trying to stalk sheep while Joe helped the younger riders push their bikes up the final grassy slopes.  Thick haze made it difficult to see even Buckfast Abbey so we continued with the descent to Cross Furzes, pausing only to be friendly to the Dartmoor ponies in the paddock.

A most unfortunate incident marred the final part of the ride from Cross Furzes.  A young deer, hidden in the hedge, decided to jump out into the lane just as young Dennis was riding past.  He had no chance of avoiding the poor creature, and both Dennis and the deer were grazed and shaken by the incident.  There were no serious injuries and the deer soon got up and wandered off, but it just goes to show how some accidents just cannot be avoided.

Sunday 12 June Day Ride: Mothecombe Beach (35m) 1015-1645
4 Present: Will Burgess (15), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Hot and sunny
We chose Mothecombe for our first beach ride of the season, partly because it's one of the easiest to reach.  After stocking up with lunch at South Brent (where today they had no sandwiches whatsoever) we sped down the hill to Ermington and were soon dropping down to the Erme estuary.

The tide was on the way out when we arrived, so we had lunch on the near side in the shade of the only tree we could find and then waded across the shallow waters of the Erme to Wonwell beach on the far side.  All that remained was to cycle home via California Cross, which we managed in excellent time.

Friday 10 June Evening Ride: Landscove Tracks (10m) 1900-2135
4 Present: Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry and sunny
Our evening excursion took us up Green Lane, along the track from Baddaford to Lower Combe, through Thornecroft and down the rocky and muddy tracks towards Pridhamsleigh, then down the woodland track back to Lower Combe.  And because we still wanted more tracks we took the overgrown and rocky track past Ware, Michael's childhood home.

Wednesday 8 June Junior Ride: Holne (10m) 1800-2010
6 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Derry Todd (10), Joe Venables (14), Megan Venables (9) Weather: Sunny and warm
Our final junior ride of the season took us to Ashburton, through River Dart Adventures and up the long woodland track to Holne park where frisbee throwing was, as usual, the order of the day.  We rode home via Michelcombe and Scoriton.

Sunday 5 June Morning Ride: Holne (10m) 1015-1230
4 Present: Will Burgess (15), Michael Jones, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Light rain
With rain falling at the start that was forecast to continue all day we contented ourselves with a brisk ride through Buckfast and Scoriton to Holne and then home via Hembury Woods.  The afternoon was spent enjoying the new film Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith at Plymouth.

Friday 3 June Evening Ride: Spitchwick (12m) 1900-2135
4 Present: Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Mainly dry
Spitchwick seemed like a perfect destination on such a sunny evening, but after riding to Ashburton, through River Dart Adventures and up Holne Chase, cloud cover was increasing dramatically.  We continued to Spitchwick nevertheless, and spent an enjoyable twenty minutes on a frisbee contest.  Highlight of the evening was when Joe attempted a dramatic change of direction on a water-filled hollow, slipped and landed squarely in the middle of the puddle with an enormous splash!  We rode home via Hembury Woods.

Sunday 29 May Day Ride: Ugborough Beacon (18m) 1015-1530
4 Present: Gage Conway (15), Dennis Ham (10), Michael Jones, Steven Major (15) Weather: Sunny & warm
On a superb May morning we rode to South Brent, stocked up with food at Plymco and then pressed on to Wrangaton and the steep lane to the golf course.  When Dennis had proved his worth by reaching the top first we started the short walk across the golf course, where a competition was in progress.  Ten-year-old Dennis spotted a golf ball lying by the path, and when he saw some golfers heading in his direction he did the obvious thing: picked it up for them to save them a walk!  Poor Dennis!  But they were very understanding, hastily urging him to drop it back where he had found it.

We had lunch half-way up the hill, hunted for letterboxes at Ugborough Beacon itself, then headed across the moor to pick up with the path down the valley to South Brent.  Part-way down we found a spring producing a stream of pure ice-cold water - just what we needed on such a hot afternoon.  There was time to explore the wooded riverside before we headed home via South Brent.

Friday 27 May Evening Ride: Avonwick (17m) 1900-2100
7 Present: Gage Conway (15), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Steven Major (15), Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
This evening's energetic ride took us through Harbourneford to Marley Head, down the track into South Brent, along the riverside road past the old Avonwick station and then home via Rattery.

Wednesday 25 May Junior Ride: Staverton (10m) 1800-2010
8 Present: Lydia Burke (10), Sophie Carter (9), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (11), Scott Mason (11), Gavin Pearson, Derry Todd (10), Megan Venables (9) Weather: Sunny and warm
Gavin was planning to catch up with us along Colston Road but got a puncture near the start - and of course he'd left in such a hurry that he didn't have a puncture repair kit with him!  Fortunately Michael's cousin was driving in the opposite direction and was happy to take a puncture kit to Gavin, who finally caught up with us in Staverton park.  When the frisbees had been thoroughly aired we returned home via Abham.

Sunday 22 May Day Ride: 1015-1630

Ride cancelled.

Friday 20 May Evening Ride: Ashburton (10m) 1900-2100
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
We quickly reached Belford Mill after a short ride through Ashburton, but the woodland track back towards the town turned out to be a little muddy after the recent rains.  We returned through the picturesque Druid lane, then on through River Dart Adventures and up the steep path from Holne Woods, pausing in the tranquil rabbit-festooned field to enjoy the sunset before emerging at Gallant Le Bower.  Keir and Joe enjoyed the muddy descent through Hembury as darkness began to fall.

Sunday 15 May Day Ride: Ten Commandments Stone (20m) 1015-1630
4 Present: Dennis Ham (10), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Mainly sunny & warm
We selected a flexible ride today in case ten-year-old Dennis found the riding a bit tough, but as it turned out we needn't have worried.  We climbed Auswell hill in double quick time and then took the moorland path to Buckland Beacon.

It was here in 1928 that a stonemason from Exeter was engaged to engrave the ten commandments into granite slabs by the Lord of Buckland Manor.  The work took six months, during which time the stonemason lived in a cow shed on the site and was supplied with a loaf of bread each day for his efforts!  Our exploration of the site also included the discovery of four Dartmoor letterboxes hidden under the rocks.

When Joe had finished falling off his bike for no reason whatsoever we followed the track past the cattle and Dartmoor foals to Cold East Cross, then continued down Widecombe hill for lunch at the Green restaurant.  We all had hugely expensive ice cream sundaes and felt ready for anything when we finally set off again.  Local Ian Boyes gave us his good wishes in the general stores - he seemed to know as much about our group as we did!

Ponsworthy ford provided entertainment for the youngsters, then Keir provided more on the descent to Spitchwick by riding into a ditch!  There was no real harm done however, and we were soon enjoying a frisbee contest on Spitchwick Common and then hot food at New Bridge.  We concluded the ride with the descent of the Slalom track in Hembury Woods - the best part of the ride according to Dennis who performed remarkably well on his first day ride.

Friday 13 May Evening Ride: Holne (10m) 1900-2115
6 Present: Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Oliver Lindley, Scott Mason (11),  Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
The youngsters wanted to play frisbee in Holne park, so we rode past Hawson Court and through Scoriton and Michelcombe.  The park was a little overgrown and wet today, making frisbee throwing somewhat difficult.

Returning to Gallant le Bower Keir managed to get a puncture, but there was still just enough light to ride the Slalom track when we eventually arrived at the top of Hembury Woods.

Wednesday 11 May Junior Ride: Hembury Woods (8m) 1800-2010
8 Present: Lydia Burke (10), Sophie Carter (9), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (11), Scott Mason (11), Gavin Pearson, Derry Todd (10), Megan Venables (9) Weather: Mainly sunny and warm
For our second junior ride of the season we took the youngsters along the lower Hembury track to Shuttaford and then back to the top of Hembury where the wide clearings in the wood offered excellent frisbee opportunities.  Of course, Harry had to throw the ring a little too hard so it landed in a tree, but fortunately Gavin was an excellent shot with some sticks that we found lying nearby.

We spent the remainder of the ride exploring the many tracks that criss-cross the wood.  The girls seemed to make a lot of noise as they bounced over the rough stones, but everyone did well and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Sunday 8 May Day Ride: Stoke Gabriel (26m) 1015-1615
8 Present: Gage Conway (15), Henry Gunter (9), Jill Hockmuth, Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Steven Major (15), Gavin Marshall, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Mainly sunny & warm
Jill suggested Stoke Gabriel as a destination today, and since nobody had any objections we proceeded along Colston Road to the Totnes cyclepath and bought lunch and refreshments at Morrisons.  The short section of main road to Longcombe was quite busy today so we were relieved to turn off even though Parliament Hill awaited us!

The approach to Stoke Gabriel was very inviting, with quaint old houses adorned with wisteria flowers.  We made straight for the lake by the weir and spent an enjoyable hour feeding the ducks and swans and soaking up the lazy atmosphere.

This was going to be Henry's longest ever ride without doing any detours, so we headed back through Collaton St Mary and Red Post, reaching Buckfastleigh in plenty of time for a short social at Crofters.

Friday 6 May Evening Ride: Chalk Ford (10m) 1900-2115
9 Present: Gage Conway (15), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Oliver Lindley, Steven Major (15), Scott Mason (11), Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Sunny start
Dartmoor seemed an appealing destination in view of the warm sunshine that bathed us at the start.  Clouds increased as we climbed Bowerdon Hill from Buckfast, and by the time we reached the moor at Lud Gate there was thick mist, a chilly wind and the distinct prospect of rain.  The moorland descent made all the climbing worthwhile, and Gage's attempt to ride across Chalk Ford resulted in top quality entertainment for everyone.

Before descending the long stony track to Scoriton Michael warned everyone not to go too fast if they wanted to avoid a puncture.  Gavin probably wasn't going too fast, but he still got a pinch puncture, right next to the valve.  He didn't have a spare tube and darkness was falling so the rest of us pressed on homewards and sent out a car to collect Gavin from Scoriton.

Wednesday 4 May Junior Ride: Staverton (10m) 1800-2010
9 Present: Jordan Barker (10), Jack Binmore (11), Lydia Burke (10), Sophie Carter (9), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (11), Scott Mason (11), Gavin Pearson, Megan Venables (9) Weather: Mainly sunny and warm
The first of six special junior rides got off to an excellent start with seven enthusiastic youngsters, nearly all of whom are taking part in the cycle training scheme at the primary school.   With the sun shining brightly we set off along the relatively flat Colston road, jumpers being removed after just a few moments.  Everyone was in good form so it wasn't long before we had arrived at the island near Staverton where stone-skimming across the river Dart was the order of the day.

They wanted frisbee as well so we had to divert to the park for a few moments, but there was plenty of time because they were all so fast on their bikes!  When chocolate refreshments had been purchased by the chocoholics we returned home via Riverford Organic and Caddaford farm, with everyone feeling pleased with themselves and looking forward to next week's ride.

Sunday 1 May Day Ride: Stover Park (29m) 1015-1600
6 Present: Gage Conway (15), Peter Heathman (15), Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Steven Major (15), Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Dry with sunny periods
This was Steven's first ride for many years - he's only had his new bike for 24 hours!  Our ride started cautiously with the climb to Green Lane and the back of Landscove, but it quickly became apparent that Steven would have no problems with any ride we might choose.  It wasn't long before we were at Broadhempston, and since the weather was very pleasant the majority were in favour of continuing to Fermoys for lunch /refreshments.  Election fever was in full swing in Ipplepen with posters on several houses - and we even saw the Lib Dem candidate doing his tour of the local houses, wearing his very large rosette.

When the youngsters had finished playing in the park behind the cafe we decided to take a longer route back via Newton Abbot so that we could explore the tracks at Stover for the first time in many years.  Fortunately Keir, who lives at Heathfield, knew the route very well, so he led us on his own special tour of Stover, taking us past the famous lake and numerous walkers out for a quiet Sunday afternoon stroll.  Peter's new racing bike, kitted out with very narrow tyres, seemed to manage the tracks without too much difficulty.

After a short stop at Bovey Straights garage Keir led us through the plantation to Blackpool, and from there Michael took the easiest route home through Bickington and Ashburton.  This has been a demanding ride for everyone, but nobody let the side down.

Friday 29 Apr Evening Ride: Hembury Woods (8m) 1900-2115
8 Present: Conner Allen (10), Jack Binmore (10), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry with some mist
Hembury Woods looked distinctly eerie this evening with a moderate mist surrounding all the trees.  The climb was a tough start for Connor on his second ride, but he was much happier when we took to the tracks at the top of the woods.  Soon we were descending rapidly over bumpy roots and rocks into the heart of the woods, with stream crossings adding more interest to the ride.  Connor was not feeling too well as we doubled back along the riverside track, negotiating barriers and stiles along the way, and he was probably a little relieved when we were unable to continue on to River Dart Adventures because of a treefall on the final section of narrow path.  We returned along another track through the woods as darkness fell.

Sunday 24 Apr Morning Ride:  Avon Dam (14m) 1015-1330
4 Present: Gage Conway (15), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Mainly dry
Our ride today took us through Dean to Nurston and on to Shipley Bridge.  Gage found a Dartmoor letterbox behind a tree and spent some time completing the details while the rest of us enjoyed the pleasant surroundings of the river Avon.

Keir was not feeling very energetic today, so we split into two groups.  Gage and Joe continued on to the Dam and over the Abbots Way to Buckfastleigh, stopping so that Gage could attach a sheep skull to the front of his bike.  Keir and Michael returned via the long track from Didworthy, observing a number of ducks, wildfowl and peacocks in the surrounding well-concealed farmland.

Friday 22 Apr Social: Badminton 1900-2200
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Wet
With torrential rain putting everyone off cycling we organised a session of badminton at the Torbay Leisure Centre, Paignton.

Sunday 17 Apr Morning Ride:  Cross Furzes (5m) 1015-1205
4 Present: Gage Conway (15), Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Increasingly wet
A depressing weather forecast persuaded us to select a relatively short route through Buckfast and Coombe to Cross Furzes, but even with this modest distance the rain still drenched us before we got back to Crofters.

Friday 15 Apr Evening Ride: Staverton (10m) 1900-2050
6 Present: Conner Allen (10), Jack Binmore (10), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Cold but dry
New rider Conner kept up with everyone on our excursion to Staverton and soon got the hang of frisbee throwing on Staverton cricket field.  The wet grass left everyone with wet feet however, so we were all glad to get home as darkness fell.

Sunday 10 Apr Morning Ride:  Carey Kennels (14m) 1015-1255
5 Present: Gage Conway (15), Peter Heathman (15), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Sunny and warm
Gage received a warm welcome back to club activities after a break of several months, but we weren't going to give him an easy ride just because he'd been away!  From Ashburton we climbed the renowned Chuley Hill, then followed quiet lanes to Woodland an Carey Kennels, where the dogs were receiving some useful exercise in the morning sunshine.

Branching back to Broadhempston we spent a little time playing frisbee in the park before returning via Green Lane.

Friday 8 Apr Evening Ride: Totnes cycle path (15m) 1900-2050
3 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Joe Venables (14) Weather: Cold but dry
With the cold weather encouraging us to ride faster this evening we completed a ride to Totnes Cycle Path via Colston Road and Rattery in double-quick time, arriving back at Buckfastleigh by 8.50.  Hot drinks were very welcome at the Crofters clubroom!

Sunday 3 Apr Morning Ride:  Diptford (15m) 1015-1220
3 Present: Peter Heathman (15), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley Weather: Misty with light drizzle
The weather was not too exciting today so we carried out a brisk examination of the lanes through Harbourneford, South Brent, Diptford and Rattery.

Friday 1 Apr Evening Ride: River Dart Adventures (9m) 1900-2130
7 Present: Jack Binmore (10), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Dry
We certainly had an adventure on our first evening ride of the new season.  The ride began with an exciting race along the riverside track in Hembury Woods.  As we rode through River Dart Adventures, however, Gavin tried to do a wheelie but couldn't release his SPD shoes from his pedals and landed on his rear end.  The unfortunate result was a broken cocyx and a great deal of pain.  He went off in the ambulance but was sent home later with several painkillers.  Meanwhile the rest of us rode up the woodland track through Holne Woods on what had become a very dark and cold night.  Everyone seemed to have excellent lights so the ride home was very enjoyable.

Fri 25 March- Mon 28 March Tour: Somerset and North Devon Coast (105m)
6 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Mainly sunny
Click here to see a full report on the tour.

Sunday 20 March Morning Ride:  Avon Dam (13m) 1015-1400
9 Present: Richard Burge, Louis Burgess (13), Tao Burgess, Peter Heathman (15), Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14) Weather: Foggy
Richard Burge made a welcome return to club riding today as we set off for Dean with a good turnout of cyclists.  The forecast predicted that the fog would clear quickly to leave a sunny day, so Avon Dam seemed like a perfect destination.  The fog was still thick as we approached the dam, so we paused for refreshments on the grassy bank overlooking the water.  Some walkers were peering through the mist at what looked like a penguin perched on the central part of the dam: when it eventually took flight however it seemed more like a cormorant.

Sol felt ill during the final part of the ride up to the Abbots Way, and the fog showed no signs of clearing at all - we had to make sure we stayed together, as all sound was absorbed by this thick blanket.  The final descent to Cross Furzes was still a lot of fun though, making an enjoyable end to the final morning ride of the season.

Friday 18 March Social: Games Evening 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (14)
The final social of the season included the usual mix of multi-player PC games and refreshments.

Sunday 13 March Day Ride:  Dartmeet (17m) 1015-1325
2 Present: Peter Heathman (15), Michael Jones, Weather: Sunny but cold

Peter was on good form today so we embarked on an ambitious ride through Holne to Venford Reservoir.  The track descent to Dartmeet provided plenty of fun, but once we had crossed the stepping stones across the Dart we had to climb the demanding Dartmeet hill.  Peter made short work of it however, and we completed an energetic ride with the descent of Dr Blackall's drive.  As we arrived back in Ashburton by 1310, Peter felt he needed a good long rest!

Friday 11 March Social: Games Evening 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Joe Venables (13)
This evening's social included the usual mix of multi-player PC games and refreshments.

Sunday 6 March Day Ride:  Ashburton (13m) 1015-1330
5 Present: Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Sunny but cold
The initial direction of this morning's ride was determined entirely by Joe, who insisted that he had to buy a pair of cycling gloves from Ashburton in order to survive!  It took him twenty minutes to decide which pair to buy, so Keir had plenty of time to look around the shop and decide that he needed to buy a packet of energy drink powder.  When they first mixed it with water both Sol and Keir had doubts about the drink, but by the time we had ridden through Rew to Druid they were desperately competing for the final drops!

Today was Mother's Day, so by the time we had climbed the woodland track from River Dart Country Park we decided that certain mothers might appreciate a more direct return via Hembury Woods lower track.

Friday 4 March Social: Games Evening 1900-2200
5 Present: Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
This evening's social included the usual mix of multi-player PC games and refreshments.

Sunday 27 February Day Ride:  Fermoys (20m) 1015-1530
9 Present: Louis Burgess (12), Tao Burgess, Henry Gunter (9), Peter Heathman (15), Jill Hockmuth, Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Sunny but cold
On a clear, crisp winter's morning we started our ride with the climb through Caddaford farm, which raised a few groans.  New rider Peter seemed to have no problems with that or any of the other hills on the ride!  Progress was swift through Staverton to Ipplepen, and we were soon enjoying a wide variety of meals and refreshments at Fermoys garden centre.

We had thought of returning via Ashburton, but several of the youngsters wanted tracks.  So we gave them first the relatively gentle track at Knowle, and then the master of all tracks, Beaston, which didn't disappoint in any way.  Keir provided entertainment by falling off on a muddy section, but Peter's puncture was not quite so entertaining!  We returned home via Landscove and Green Lane.

Friday 25 February Social: Music Quiz 1900-2200
6 Present: Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
After a series of initial film and tv theme tune rounds when Oliver's team took a significant lead, the final rounds of this evening's Music Quiz brought Gavin's team up the rankings to finish on draw.

Sunday 20 February Day Ride:  Spitchwick (15m) 1015-1415
7 Present: Tao Burgess, Josh Ham (12), Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Sunny but cold
There was enthusiasm for a Dartmoor ride today, and since the weather was so perfect for the time of year we decided on Spitchwick, reached via the Lower Hembury track and New Bridge.  We enjoyed several rounds of frisbee on the common, managing to avoid both losing the ring in the water and hitting the passing canoe club members.  Continuing on along the wooded valley the younger riders were not too impressed with the long climb to Buckland, some finding any excuse to stop on the way.  Eventually, however, we set off again for Ashburton and home, today's return being much more pleasant for Sol and Keir than the last time they took this route!  Another excellent winter ride.

Friday 18 February Social: Games evening 1900-2200
3 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Joe Venables (13)
Entertainment was provided from the usual mix of computer games and DVDs.

Sunday 13 February Day Ride:  Cross Furzes (4m) 1015-1130
6 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Cold with wintry showers
Conditions were very cold this morning, and with several members not feeling well enough for a ride we decided to arrange a social for the day.  Tao and Joe did keep the flag flying, however, by completing a short ride to Cross Furzes via Buckfast.

Friday 11 February Social: Games evening 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
Entertainment was provided from the usual mix of computer games and DVDs.

Sunday 6 February Day Ride:  Totnes (16m) 1015-1430
8 Present: Tao Burgess, Jill Hockmuth, Henry Gunter (9), Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), David Robinson, Joe Venables (13) Weather: Cold with sunny periods
Being unsure how 9-year-old Henry would fare on this first ride, we set off along Colston road with a view to deciding on a route at Staverton.  We needn't have worried: he performed exceptionally well with the support of his enthusiastic mother Jill, so we extended the ride along the Totnes cycle path and enjoyed an extended refreshment stop at the Terrace coffee shop.  David bought chicken and apricot pie!

Most of us decided to avoid "puncture ally", the steep track into Littlehempston, but Tao insisted on riding it.  He felt quite pleased with himself until we neared Staverton.  But to his credit, he did fix the puncture in double quick time.

Henry was still riding well as we arrived back at Buckfastleigh, and Jill was very pleased that for once cycling had proved more enjoyable for him than computer games!

Friday 4 February Social: Games evening 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
Computer games kept us entertained after the viewing of the second half of Titanic.

Sunday 30 January Day Ride:  Gara Bridge (28m) 1015-1645
4 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Cloudy but dry
Another adventurous day ride took us through Harbourneford to South Brent and then along a back lane that started from behind the Woodpecker Inn.  This was Tao's suggestion, and we were all pleased when it brought us out near Kitterford Cross.  From there it was but a short ride to the garage at California Cross that was to provide our lunch for the day.

A long descent took us directly to Gara Bridge, a quiet wooded spot on the Avon that offered a barely suitable lunch spot on the riverbank.  Joe spent some time searching for the Cream Egg he had purchased from the garage, but later discovered it lining the insides of his coat pocket - he had sat on the coat at lunchtime!

Tao thought it would be quicker as well as more enjoyable to return via Totnes rather than Rattery, so we took a new lane direct to Harbertonford and then continued on along a delightful riverside road to Luscombe Farm and the long climb to the top of Totnes.  We had plenty of time, so Safeways cafe was used for light refreshments before we returned home via the Totnes cyclepath.

Friday 28 January Social: Video evening 1900-2200
3 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
After a few computer games we settled down to enjoy the first half of the world's most popular movie: Titanic.

Sunday 23 January Day Ride:  Lustleigh (31m) 1015-1630
7 Present: Tao Burgess, Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Oliver Lindley, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Sunny but very cold
Our ride started well, with a brisk spin through Ashburton, Bickington and the back road from Blackpool through Liverton to Bovey Tracey.  The Spar provided refreshments and, after another short ride to the start of the railway cycle path, we settled down beside the river for an enjoyable lunch.  We took it in turns to do help Sol with the puncture that he picked up moments earlier.

We soon lost count of our valuations of the properties in Lustleigh, but were pleased to see that the cafe is now open for business.  On this occasion we pressed on up the long, steep climb through the Cleave, pausing several times to admire the spectacular views.  Tao was now beginning to feel a little ill so we wasted no time in pressing on to Manaton , being very conscious that the cold might become a problem near dusk.  We took advantage of the refreshment van at Hound Tor to buy hot drinks, then set off for the final leg to Cold East Cross.

It was still quite light, but now the cold was really beginning to affect our younger riders.  Gloves were passed around for the long descent to Ashburton, and as we rolled into Buckfastleigh the local newsagents was required to thaw out a few cold fingers and toes before the final mile home.

Friday 21 January Social: Pizza Hut 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
Our first ever food social took us to Plymouth's Pizza Hut for a special meal for four.  Keir insisted on having his own helium balloon, just like all the other little children!

Sunday 16 January Morning Ride:  Cold East Cross (15m) 1015-1430
4 Present: Michael Jones, Oliver Lindley, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Mainly dry, sunny periods developing
Keir and Joe were not especially fast on the climb from Ashburton to Halshanger cross, so we decided against our original plan of visiting Haytor.  Diverting to Cold East Cross we paused at the picturesque stone bridge over the river Ashburn so that the youngsters could amuse themselves with sticks in the water.  The journey from Cold East Cross to Pudsham Down proved just as wintry as the name suggests, with bitter winds and a sudden shower that left us relieved to reach the shelter of the track to Buckland.  The remainder of the ride was just perfect, however, with bright sunshine lighting our way past Spitchwick to New Bridge, where refreshments were definitely the order of the day.   Michael and Oliver even got a discount on their soup!  Another excellent winter ride concluded with the descent of Hembury Woods' Slalom track and an afternoon social at Crofters.

Friday 14 January Ten-pin bowling 1900-2200
4 Present: Michael Jones, Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
We enjoyed two games of tenpin bowling at LA Bowl, Newton Abbot.  In case you're interested, Michael won round 1and Gavin won round 2 - and Keir learned how to play the game without side barriers!

Sunday 9 January Morning Ride:  Totnes (16m) 1015-1345
5 Present: Michael Jones, Sol Kelly (13), Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13) Weather: Dry start, wet finish
Sol was proud to show off his expensive new bike as everyone met at the start on a rather breezy Sunday morning.  The forecast was not too promising but we were keen to include a cafe stop and so pressed on to Totnes nevertheless, via Colston Road.  We paused at Totnes weir to admire the view before continuing along the riverside cycle path to the Plains.  The Terrace Coffee Shop was not quite as welcoming as usual when the proprietor noticed some muddy footprints leading to our table, but she soon forgave the youngsters and served us with delicious hot chocolates, toasted teacakes and Danish pastries.

Keir and Joe just had to go shopping as we were about to leave, and by the time everyone was ready the rain started in earnest.  At least the temperature was fairly warm, so we all made the most of a wet return via Staverton by splashing through all the large puddles that filled the roads.

Friday 7 January Crofters Social 1900-2130
6 Present: Jack Binmore (10), Michael Jones, Harry Laity (10), Gavin Pearson, Keir Purdie (14), Joe Venables (13)
Games and videos social.

Sunday 2 January Morning Ride:  Fermoys (20m) 1015-1430
2 Present: Michael Jones, Keir Purdie (14) Weather: Cold with sunny intervals increasing
Our first ride of 2005 took us on a moderately-paced ride through Staverton to Fermoys at Ipplepen, where the food was excellent and Christmas decorations were being sold at half the usual price.  We called in to Broadhempston on the return journey for some frisbee throwing.
