Ride Reports
AGM at Buckfastleigh primary school
A packed AGM, hastily moved to Buckfastleigh Primary School, celebrated a year of doubled attendances and set a more ambitious programme: more youth hostel weekends, attendance certificates and the prospect of short adult tours. The previous minutes were forgotten, raising a smile amid brisk elections.
Rolster Bridge reached at last
Amid Totnes Raft Race crowds we finally made it to Rolster Bridge at the third attempt, a quiet, scenic spot that opened new lanes back via Tigley. Highlights included Ken hunting for Julie while she’d slipped to the front, and Philip Roberts’ puncture swiftly mended.
Record-breaking games evening
Our first social lived up to its name, with a record turnout packing Michael’s bungalow and prompting thoughts of a larger venue next time. Computer and board games, videos and plentiful refreshments kept everyone busy throughout.
Bowerman's Nose and Widecombe
A sunny wrong turn set the tone, taking us to lunch below Bowerman’s Nose and up its rough approach for wide views. Laughter came from Richard Hopper’s futile bid to climb the stack and the sight of dogs in the kitchen and a wicker‑fan till at a Widecombe café.
Haydon Common and Dawlish tea
A lively, stop‑start ride to Haydon Common, marked by mishaps and small dramas—early punctures, the trailers walking and briefly losing their way before lunch—then a chestnut bombardment while Michael foraged, before we finished contentedly with excellent tea in Dawlish.
Norway and club slides in Paignton
Hosted by the Lakeman family in Paignton, Michael’s slide show swept through our 1989 rides, from a sweltering Beer weekend to the wet grandeur of Norway’s fjords. Refreshments were shared, a few embarrassing photos raised laughs, and Paul unveiled his smart new racing bike.
Buckfastleigh Discovery diversion
Rain kept us near Buckfastleigh, but the day became a tally of G‑reg Range Rovers — 44 by Totnes — explained at the Dart Valley Railway as dealer training for the launch of the new Discovery and its rail‑pulling stunt. Later, the flooded Cross Furzes ford soaked the bold.
Cinema: Star Trek V, Torquay
A short-notice club cinema trip drew a good turnout for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. The film follows Kirk, Spock and McCoy from a hostage ploy on Nimbus III to a hijacked Enterprise and a quest to meet God, capped by Kirk’s "What does God need with a starship?"
Wet diversion to Brookside Tearooms
In relentless rain we abandoned Posbury Clump for the Brookside Tearooms at Bovey Tracey. Leaving into a torrent, a mix-up saw Martin guess the route, Mark double back to find him and Peter head off, reinforcing the rule of the day: if you get lost, wait.
Cycle maintenance basics workshop
The first in our bicycle workshop series covered the basics of maintenance to keep machines safe and reliable through winter. We rounded off with a short video on the science of the bicycle, while the computers proved a distraction and Chris Giles was applauded for remembering his coat.
Maypool fireworks weekend 1989 2
Rain drove us into a bus shelter, but the weekend found its heart at Maypool Youth Hostel, where wardens Dave and Jenny Rowe served hot soup, doughnuts and an open‑air fireworks show over the Dart. Sunshine brought Paignton beach dares, wet feet and sand in the gears. Cockington’s floods and algae signs sent us to lunch under a giant fir, with tree‑climbing and teasing keeping spirits up.
Uphempston and the lake of mud
The day pivoted on a newly explored track at Uphempston that ended in a hedge-to-hedge lake of mud, to the joy of some and dismay of others. Multiple splash-throughs versus a gate-and-field escape, plus a late puncture, set the tone for a cold, muddy but memorable finish.
